Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

This is actually a decent article considering it is in the Red Star.
I suspect that this civil war started when the radical Palmater would not accept her loss and along with fellow radicals decided to undermine Chief Atleo.
Good point. The academic wing of these movements is always more interested in theorizing and demanding absolute purity of the movement, at the expense of real progress which might help people.
“to help carry my cold dead body off this island” – FTA
Ah, the jokes just write themselves.
Dysfunction within this community is not universal, but it is pandemic and found at every level. I recall a former student of mine who had to withdraw from our university because she had suddenly lost her funding from her tiny “First Nation”. Upon further investigation, we found that her aunt, who was in charge of these funding decisions, had fallen out with the young woman’s mother (her sister) and showed her displeasure by cutting the student off.
Even recognizing that the INAC bureaucracy is in itself a major contributor to the problem, I do not envy any politician or government official who tries to negotiate with aboriginal people in the current climate and have even more sympathy for those in the aboriginal community who are looking for genuine solutions to the dire economic and social conditions on so many reserves.
“Since you have decided to betray me, all I ask of you now is to help carry my cold dead body off this island,’’
Because somebody stole the battery out of my Hummer and we’re gonna need a LOT of guys.
People are trying to forget about Chief Spence because she is irrelevant. But, alas, she is also low-hanging fruit for the media — Spence says this, Spence says that, Spence writes Queen, Spence vows to continue fast etc, etc, blahblahblah. A Spence story is easy to get and write and fills air time and newspaper columns. The government cut Spence off at the knees when it “leaked” the audit report. It is the lame-stream media that props her up and allows her and her retainers to think they matter.
Yes, they will need almost as much help to carry that body as she did to carry all the money.
…all I ask of you now is to help carry my cold dead body off this island…
Would that more would follow that lead…fewer taxes.
“But they were certain about one thing — the timing, moments before he went into one of the most important meetings of his life, was meant to destabilize the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and undermine his efforts at a meeting which many in his organization fiercely opposed.”
Deja-vu anyone? Where did I just read exact same wording?
I dunno.
Fill us in, oh nebulous and wise one.
The FN Trotskyites vs. FN Bolsheviks – can’t they both lose?
The reoccurring attitude I hear in this whole disjointed FN protest over everything in general, is the insane revisionist ideas which stem from deluded native supremacists. This idea that after 300 years of western cultural developmental organization and integration, and over 100 years as a sovereign nation that those of native extract “own “ Canada and that Canada is an illegitimate colonist entity is nothing short of psychotic delusion (this is an exact repetition of a cold war era anti-west soviet lie told to justify sustained western hostility and the soviet arms race). In its modern employment by radicalized first nations chauvinists, it is a revised cold war myth borne of supremacist bigotry and simmered in irrational fanatic loathing.
The fact of the matter is first nations surrendered all claim of land and sovereignty in treaty to the British Crown in return for the Crown guarantee of peace (no war and no further land claims by FN), assigned reserves, minimal state entitlement, cultural sovereignty and very little else. All this modern materialistic entitlement they lavish on FN is a machination which is beyond the legal demands of treaty and the Indian act. I think at some level the more intelligent ring leaders of the First Nations entitlement industry know they are breaking the strictures of treaty and haven’t a legal leg to stand on in sustaining these lavish entitlement demands should they ever be challenged by governments.
But as we have seen in these disorganized protests and internal faction bickering, there are more radical and dangerous attitudes/factions in the FN protest movement who are absolutely devoid of reason and realities. All I can say is that the more rational and pragmatic leadership in FN had best reign in the supremacist revisionist fanatical cliques before they collapse all support for sustaining the current decadent unaccountable native welfare system. When I hear so called first nations “leaders” voice the maniacal supremacist-revisionist delusions I heard this week (of waging a insurgent “war” with Canada’s infrastructure over some nebulous claims), I know someone will get hurt if they are not restrained – primarily because the PC-indoctrinated police are turning a blind eye to the criminal potential of the FN fanatics.
They have really lost the fight when I agree with the comments at the red star.
Ken, I dunno about any of this — the Toronto Star is not an honest broker in any way, IMO: as I mentioned the other day, by backing Spence, it deliberately chose to incite the minority extremist side of the conflict within the AFN, which you correctly noted, self-servingly corresponds to the Star’s own left-wing mentality. This was nothing more than a bald-faced attempt to find a new stick with which to beat Stephen Harper — without any regard for the interests or the condition of the FN peoples.
Did you see the Star today? Tim Harper’s column is at the top of page one, right below the masthead. Frankly, the column ain’t that good, even allowing for the crowd over at that place. The money lines are these, IMO, which come at the end of the column:
“Metatawabin said Spence remains strong and her supporters united.
But she is now being overshadowed by internal fighting within the AFN.
She needs a way out before people no longer pay any attention to her.”
Sounds to me like the Star staff woke up yesterday afternoon and were panicked to find that they were seriously off-side with public opinion. No one I know ever gave a whit of attention to anything she had to say, other than as public spectacle comedy. Here’s a way out for her: quit the diet and the Island, resign as Chief of Attawapiskat and hand in the keys to the Escalade (a little historical parallel there, as when Leo Amery suggested to Neville Chamberlain that he should hand in the seals of office).
The Indian Business in Canada needs to be re-defined. The Bullshit treaties that the Lawyers & Sick Judges have created MUST be flushed into the crapper. Indians are NOT owed anything, nor is a treaty everlasting. A class action lawsuit by taxpayers against the Government of Canada, argued by “Real Lawyers” would clean out those living off Indian Business. An International Tribunal can hear this type of Case.
Time to treat all Canadians equally! Yes Indians are individual persons that may qualify for a helping hand, but they are NOT Special persons
JMHO
Let’s say, hypothetically, that I controlled a revenue stream that was meant to provide food, shelter, clothing, medical care and education for children, and instead of channeling those funds appropriately, instead I diverted them to my own corpulent self; then I might, just might, expect that nobody on this good earth would give two damns about what happened to me, and would be inclined to let my cold dead body rot in its place, should I decide to starve myself to death.
You want to get rid of the idiotic treaties? Get rid of monarchy. Long overdue.
Just as the occupy movement included a mishmash of absurd or conflicting demands, so too does this. As such, there is no possible way for any leader to speak for the group, and petulant among them will fight those who try. So too will this have the same withering outcome as the occupy nonsense.
Too bad, as there are some deep seated problems that need resolution.
454, if it’s not too much to ask, could you please specify in precisely workable terms how all of that could happen (I’d suggest Monarchy first, since that’s your premise, then the treaties, if you would. Or the other way around, if you prefer)?
P.S. You’ll need to be careful of a -34 on the exam; which would put you at about 420, if my arithmetic is correct.
When is the federal government going to do a forensic audit of the Attawapiskat finances?
There is no doubt as the auditor’s report showed there are millions of dollars not accounted for as to who got the money.
All kinds of rules were broken. Canadian taxpayers need answers. The opposition should want to know if our money is being misused? the auditor’s report found lost wrong with the finances – this would not be a witch hunt but a search for the truth. It is important that the members of the Attawapiskat band know where their money went and government must provide answers – they can’t do it themselves.
Is it any coincidence that all this trouble breaks out after that psychotic Nelson returned home with the battle plans given him by Iran? Someone should see if Palmater has been to the middle east lately.
The way to fix the problem is to stop feeding people who won’t work to feed themselves. Or house themselves, or do anything that maintains their person.
Anything else is just tinkering around the edges.
The history of Indian peoples in Canada is tribal and tribal societies often war with each other so nothing has changed and likely won’t for generations to come. Shawn Atleo has an impossible job attempting to represent all these diverse tribes whose leadership have their own personal agendas. I suggest Harper just sit back, do nothing and watch this whole farce implode in the fullness of time. If nothing else this is good entertainment.
IMHO,the last place Spence wants to be is back on her reserve.
I do not think that she will be given a parade,a lynching, maybe. The people there do have internet access and are following her ‘perils’.There is a big difference between sitting in front of your computer in suburbia being angry about Spence’s show and sitting in a hovel knowing that she has put you there.
The next part of the chief’s journey should be very interesting.
As for Pam P.,”she ain’t pretty, she just looks that way”. Her crew have taken many missteps, they won’t have support from the majority.
On the other hand, dastardly, the history of the English-speaking peoples is absolutely replete with harmony and bliss, particularly among those tribes of the home islands.
While I understand the sensitivity around getting involved in somebody else’s fight, I’m pretty much for Atleo and his approach, which, according to my flawed understanding of their governance structure, represents the will of his people: his approach, IMO, will do a great deal more good for all concerned than the alternative — which has offered us all pretty much nothing for an interminable period.
By my reckoning, there’s still a very deep well of goodwill out there: the side-tracking militants, and their co-religionists in the bat-house media, really ought to go away for awhile.
I agree, occam. The 1980 McEachen decision that was supposed to settle the First Nations land claim issue once and for all, was quite sensible.
Basically, Judge Mceachen said that 200 years of European occupation and building a Country superseded any claim by Indians to more land than they had been given already.
Like most other commissions, the politicians were too cowardly to enact his recommendations, and the FN activists have taken full advantage of it.
The latest battle between AFN factions does not bode well for Canada, the reasonable people,Atleo et al, are being chased by a bunch of radical Indian Grievance activists. Take a look at the Chief Bigmouth from the Pine Creek Rez Manitoba,Derek Nepinak, he has a degree in Indian Grievance, and intends to push until his faction take over the AFN.
Along with Terry nelson, of “Iran” fame, this faction will eventually blackmail wavering Canadian politicians to the point that FN Bands will become the de facto landlords of Canada, and we’ll pay the rent.
We have to back Harper 100%, as he’s the only politician currently in the mix that has the guts to face up to these radicals in the AFN. Mulcair or any Liberal would roll over and play dead for the big mouth Chiefs, and we’ll all suffer for it.
By my reckoning, there’s still a very deep well of goodwill out there…
When indians in Saskatchewan were given taxpayer money to buy land, their tactic was to buy all the land around a resistant landowner, then try to intimidate the landowner with harassment.
If that didn’t work, the bank called the lines of credit and the Farm Credit Corp. called their loan.
Yeah, lots of good will…
And, strad, your alternative would be?
As a matter of public record, I don’t think I need any third-hand, third-party lectures about the abuse of property rights in the great Dominion. But I do thank you, as I do all uninformed interlopers, for your comments.
Are you the same David Southam who pleaded guilty to selling hashish? You must be “my moral and intellectual superior than”. Bowing, kneeling…
Sorry, strad, I didn’t mean that — and I apologize. I have my own difficulties with non-native infringement of property rights here in southwestern Ontario. Please forgive me.
On the other hand, I would like to hear your alternative.
No, actually, wouldn’t know the stuff. But thanks for the honourable mention, or something.
How about an answer to my previous question?
The alternative is to quit feeding the idle. Period
And, I could care less what happens in southwestern Ontario, or any of the east, so long as they don’t move West. They’re as bad as the indians for wanting gov’t to provide for them.
The buying land around a landowner is exactly what happened to a close acquaintance. I would not know whether financial pressure was put on them as they still own the land but quit farming there and moved their house off the land, live someplace else and use the land as pasture. Needless to say they do not have any goodwill.
You are correct wallyj.
I had a brief encounter with a resident of Attawapiskat recently. Pleasant young man, employed by De boers, chose to live off the res.
When I enquired about ‘home’ he responded with “We have to get rid of Chief Spence”.
I think Phil would blow up if he couldn’t say that every so often.
“Apropos of nothing in particular, …”

phil, to save wear on your keyboard, you just have to post the first five words as I have quoted, we know the rest of it that you are going to say. Of course, if stradivarius is right, just carry on as usual so you don’t blow up.
Phil get a life,get a brain,get a job!
Very well said, Occam. I suspect if we did a poll among working, off-reserve, native Indians, we’d find very little support for chief Spend. What the Indian industry is terrified of is those under their care suddenly becoming productive and no longer dependent. This would mean the end of the Indian industry and a lot unemployed lawyers, corrupt chiefs and family members of the corrupt chiefs.
I think they’ve greatly overplayed their hand this time and the smackdown is going to be completely unexpected when it comes.
If Spence needs a way out she can haul her big ass back to Attawapiskat and help her people.
She’s been turned down by the Queen and the GG, refused to meet with the PM when he set up the meeting, what’s left besides the fishy broth?
