I’m in Alberta where an election was called this morning, and I just sat through the most offensive robocall “poll” you can imagine.
As soon as I pressed “2” to indicate that I was planning to vote Wildrose, the questions changed to a personal attack: “Press 1 if you are opposed to proper health care, Press 2 if you think students don’t deserve to go to kindergarten, Press 3 if you think that people should be allowed to drive drunk up to the legal limit without consequence, etc., etc.
If anyone else has received calls like this, let me know.

Well, yes.
Unless they’re driving recklessly (which is illegal stone sober), the entire point of a “legal limit” is that until you cross it you’re not breaking the law.
I’m okay in principle, with a legislated “some level of alcohol between N and the limit” adding penalties in case of damage caused while driving that is determined to be the fault of the driver, sure.
But that’s not merely “driving” without consequence.

.08 is the legal definition of “drunk”, under .08 you are NOT “drunk”.
The object in campaigns is two fold. Get your supporters out to vote. And convince the other guys supporters not to vote. Discourage them if you can’t convince them. Negative advertising is more effective in supressing the other guys vote than energizing your own. Negative advertising needs to make your suppporters feel smug and the other guys supporters feel like staying at home. Green party campaign objective in Lizzy’s riding.

Well, that all sounds non-partisan!
Seems some here are guilty of confirmatory bias – I’m not at all surprised. And I’ll will recant somewhat and agree that not voting only ensures complacency of the chosen and may place an undue burden on other voters.
Just wish there was a true Libertarian candidate in my provincial riding of Calgary Klein… Next best option would be have to be the WRA. Now if I could only filter those obnoxious robo-calls.
In Paul’s defence, many highly intelligent, erudite, even celebrated libertarians think voting’s a total waste of time and energy.
I feel that way most of the time when I consider how putative conservatives out of power become liberals in power. But I always go to the polls, sans civic pride, with the idea of voting for the least bad option.
When I questioned him about his apparent indifference to politics, an old friend replied: “I don’t care who pushes the f**k-up-button.”. You have to admit: it’s a compelling argument.

Unless Alison Redford believes in an absolute zero tolerance policy — i.e. believes that it should be against the law to have even a half a glass of wine with dinner four hours before your drive — then Alison Redford *also* thinks that people “should be allowed to drink and drive,” provided that they’ve had less than whatever arbitrary blood alcohol level SHE believes should be punishable.

Common homeys, this is “Hope & Change”, once Danielle is Premier we won’t need to worry about our rent, or our car payments, or our eductian or having to work. Vote WRP, it’s the “cool” anti global warming thing to do!

You’re making a mistake! You must wait at least six months AFTER the election results before complaining about robocalls. That way you have time to form a nice astroturf movement, with no evidence, and lots of friends in the media, to complain about the results and demand a new election. Don’t forget to focus all the police attention on a riding you handily won!
If a machine tells you to vote at a place unfamliar to you, GO there! Do not question the electronic voice, and certainly do not confirm the location with anyone, especially elections’ officials. Doing this would indicate a functioning brain, and therefore a likely Danielle Smith supporter.

At least this election is easy. Until now I did a careful study of all the parties and all the platforms and opted for what I thought was the best one. When Special Ed was running there was no best one so I stayed home. This time I am voting to get rid of the (to borrow a Shakespearean term)SHREW. Any premier who would try to micromanage people’s lives to the degree that the Red(ford) one wants to micromanage is too dangerous to have anywhere near the levers of power.

Just received this call, I’m in the Macleod riding. The number was 403-774-1623 and I was called threee times tonight from this number (missed the first two.)
Had to move back to Ontario couldn’t afford your cigarettes.

Interesting … but you realize that a calling station ID can be spoofed…. in other words someone is abusing the owner of that number… a criminal act if I am not mistaken.

Received a robo call earlier this evening from
403-774-1623. Was expecting the push poll questions I heard about on the news, driving while under .08 etc. First question was what news outlet did I most trust, so i hung up.

I hope that people here know that the study that established the blood alcohol limit of .08, under which many people have been made criminals and have lost their livelihoods and driving licences, had a sample size of 168 people.
It’s no wonder that the elites in power expected all of us to accept AWG after swallowing their BS BAC limit wholesale.

The .05 campaign is another round of prohibitionist incrementalism.
They are bent on making the consumption of any alcohol prior to driving an offence since two beers would put many people over that limit.
If they would just plainly state they really believe that operating a vehicle with any amount of alcohol in your system constitutes criminal impairment then we could settle it once and for all.
If outright prohibition wasn’t their true aim then in the interest of saving just one life they would be giving everyone who went out drinking free cab rides to and from their chosen venue.
They don’t care about saving lives because if they did they would have hatched a more effective harm reduction model ages ago.

Good point. Before we rush out and condemn the Alberta PCs for this clumsy robocall campaign, maybe we had better nail down exactly who is doing it? Sounds almost too good to be true if you have a hate on for the Alberta PCs, don’t you know?
Could be it’s a false flag operation of some kind. I doubt Wildrose has a hand in it, because they would stand to lose the most if word got out that they doing such a thing. But one of the no-hoper parties, or some left-wing activist group could be stirring the pot for their own reasons.
I will be voting Wildrose this election, and have already made a donation, but I would be leery of trying to hang this thing on the PCs until such time as proof becomes available.

This is all happening because of a weird leadership race. Multiway races end up with odd results – not just Redford, but also Stelmach and also Stephane Dionne. Mar should have been Premier. He was groomed under Klein.
This call just cements WildRose support. Shouldn’t they be going after undecided voters instead of trying to berate those who choose the Wild Rose? Seems pretty dumb to me.

That was indeed the poll you heard about. It starts off with the “media outlet of choice” question, then asks what party you support, then it goes downhill from there.
