There’s been a lot of talk of late about banning fighting in the NHL. This narrative appears to be popping up throughout popular culture, which of course is controlled by our “intellectual & moral betters” on the Left. Looking a few years into the future, if we follow the “progressive” agenda to its logical end, what would hockey look like?
Here is a fair comparison of the Left’s vision vs. Common Sense, when it comes to professional hockey:

The operative word is “play” not “fight”.
Takes talent to play hockey.
Being a thug takes no talent at all, and fewer brains.
Gallen, you’re partly right. Two goons fighting just because the coaches decide to hold up the game doesn’t help. However, fights because of two highly competitive individuals losing their cool in the heat of the moment is what we watn to see and is what the left wants to deprive us of.
Too many “to be safe” rules, including the proposed “no-touch” icing will result in a game that no one, except die-hard euroweenies, will want to watch.
Canadian style hockey is violent and I hope it always is. If it goes Euro-peon style where they all dance around in spandex and hug each other then no one will watch.
a)”There’s too much violence” Actually, very little compared to what there will be if the leftard commies get their way.
b)”There’s too great a risk of injury” See (a) above.
c)”It’s not fair that one team has to lose”.Exactly.When the leftard commies get in,ALL teams except them lose!
d)”Too much energy is used for each game and flying the teams around” Compared to what?? Flying eco-cultist,leftard,commie teams to exotic spots for “summits”?
e)”The consumption of wood for the hockey sticks
is depleting our forests”. But cutting down and burning the rain forests to grow cane/corn for ethanol is honky-dory!(Oh and to help built fruit Fly’s/Gorbull’s multiple houses).
f)”It’s sexist that only men can compete.” Yeah.I bet that really pi&&es of the Women’s teams at the Olympics.
g)”It’s racist because it systematically favors white people.” Unlike basketball/NFL football which favors under priveliged black people.
h)”The high ticket prices deprive the 99%”. And the NBA/NFL/ Major League Baseball ticket prices allow EVERYBODY!
i)”Why do hockey players make more than teachers?” Because no other professional sports players do,so somebody must step on the poor,down-trodden,poverty ridden,3 car owning,2 months+ holiday, unionized teachers!!!
Any other leftard commie hypocritical questions??
This business of drafting the best players first has got to go. Actually, some people are even offended by the word “draft”. End the draft.
All players should be pooled and drawn by lottery, or names placed in a large hat.
Whenever a visiting team plays in Toronto, the winning team should be held to 5 goals actually counted, in this way the Maple Leaves won’t feel so bad in their losses.
They get even in the golf pool anyhow.
@marc, glass houses buddy. Trade Flames for Leafs and it’s all the same… and once Kipper takes his bag of goalie gear and flies back to Europe you guys are even more hooped, since he is the only reason you were close (and sometimes in) to the playoffs, in any year that he played. Leafs and Flames will both be on the links soon. Another year, more the same for both organizations.
The Jets were down 3-0 until there was a (fairly lame) fight. After the fight, they came back and scored 4 straight to win, outshooting the Caps 17-2 post-fight. Fighting is part of the game beyond the fight itself, and removing it cannot happen without pussifying the game. Leave ringette to the Eurofags.
“being a thug takes no talent at all, and fewer brains.”
I’m calling you out on that gellen. Let’s see you make the lineup on any of the NHL rosters, or even on any of their farm teams. Fact is, it takes a TON of talent just to make it to the NHL as 4th liner. Maybe you don’t follow hockey, so I’ll try and explain why NHL teams need “thugs”. Hockey is a contact sport, and the checking is a very important aspect of the game. And sometimes, you get a mismatch of player sizes on the ice. What’s to stop a much physically larger team from focusing on the checking and physically battering their opponents? This is how the role of enforcer evolved. Big players who took advantage of their size against small players could expect to skate a shift against the other team’s enforcer. This unspoken threat works pretty well to keep most players in line. This is especially true in regards to the super stars of the league, such as Crosby, the Sedin’s, and before them Gretzky, Lemieux, etc. Anyone that tries to flatten one of these guys is going to get pummelled quick.
sports in today life
is consider only
entertainment
and make money
in old age they put lion with some soldure to fight animals
now they put them follow a ball if they knock down for anyhit it is ok
they all have insurance
hollywood movie and sport club has same idea
even actor in hollywood thier body may fit and more athletic than real sport club guys
but they have less riskof injury to be actor
but being sport man
age of work man ship is short and profit is les and damage can be significant they can not cansor or pur new body act in behalf of actor
like jony chan movies
Mr chan said he came to US he has less damage enter to his body becaus they do fake movie kartah kid but in China and hongkong he must do real movie and no replaced with him
if you like real body fit can go to sport club with less injurty
I do not like violance in hockey
hocky equipment and game need to
redo and redesign to reduce risk of violance and injury otherwise need to get stop not worst to watch it
I can’t stand the violence in hockey and I don’t watch it any more. Well, except for the last couple of games in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
This is what Grapes said tonight about fighting vs. the dirty elbows to the head.

Ok writes like a foreign Dr Seuss.
Wow, someone finally gets it.
Actually, I think the most important reasons are that the true ideologues on the left hate that the leagues are:
a) almost all white and
b) completely male
factors both abhorrent individually, and absolutely intolerable together. Also, they can’t legislate away either aspect.
The other reasons are just candy coating that the sheeple can get behind.
Q. How many players are on the ice at one time, on the Liberal/NDP hockey team?
A. Six. The only problem is that they all play left wing.
Frank Q:
Almost correct. One plays left wing, one plays left defense, and four play “keeper”.

It’s all green legs and SPAM.
Kroket – How about the juniors? That’s part of our family’s Christmas tradition. The potential is there, we see the top players in the world (before their prime) in a value that values speed and skill.
James – The Trap is hug’em hockey and is boring to watch. I’d much rather watch a fast open ice game than a slugfest . Yeah, hitting is part of the game. I favour getting rid of the instigator rule to let the players police themselves. (I know that wasn’t where you were going, but your comment struck a chord.) And I don’t like seeing skilled players taken out for a season or a career because of a concussion/knee injury/cheap shot by a goon who will never be able to keep up to him. It’s a Harrison Bergeron thing, don’t let the handicapper general make us all equal by ensuring we all play at the level of the lowest common denominator.
chutzpahticular – not nice! Scotch out the nose on that laugh. That’s gonna leave a mark (on the monitor).

You bet!!! So tell me OK. just how would your Sharia Law allow you, being a woman and all,to redefine the sport? Oh wait. The only Islam sports are beating women, hanging gays, and trying to kill everybody else who doesn’t bow to a 7th century pedaephile.Silly me.You’re right.Who needs gear for protection from that.
Believe me I’m no leftie and I have no use whatever for hockey.
Hockey is a goon sport. Always has been and probably always will be. We had a great hockey team when I was in grade 8. First year high school only ONE player on our team still played hockey. Why? We didn’t need broken bones, stitches or our heads knocked off. It was getting bad enough in grade 8 and we knew it would only get worse.
Hockey stopped being fun to play and as a result it’s not much fun to watch either. Gretsky and the Oilers brought a lot of skill to the game. They were fun to watch. But alas that style of hockey is long gone.
What other sport promotes bare knuckle brawling? Please, don’t say they don’t promote it because they do.
Regardless it’s a free world and if you enjoy watching the goons go at it be my guest. But please don’t lump all those who detest hockey in with people from the left. It just isn’t so.
Gee, I was so looking forward to the styrofoam sticks and Nerf pucks, not to mention a speed limit on breakaways.
when I was younger I gain karteh able to teach 30 students in class as my husband has black belt in karteh too
profesional karteh is more respect and dicipline to higher belt and control your boxing game commiteh
when you shoot the balls that ball where it hit is out of your control
I always like sport and sport men and women since their job is difficult as career but support violance with hate that is crime that is not sport
Goons ,goons goons goons.
Let’s see how many times did Gretzky get an elbow to the head ?
Why cause the guy who did it would have to answer for it on the next shift.
But most of all he was a super star in a class all his own and weather you were on his teams or against you respected his greatness why because as a man you had respect for a legend in the making ….who would want to be that guy the guy ended his career? That actually meant something back then .
Fast forward 20 years and we Crosby having to fight and defend himself becausec there is no room in the game for goons.lol. So you get what you get . I love fighting in hockey but only for the right reasons , boost your team moral, heat of the moment , cheap shot on a star , you gotta answer the bell.
Crosby, stammos , semin, sedim, cthey are not fighters , they are specialty goal scores , similar to Gretzky , you have guys that do it all (iginla, messier) but they are a dying breed men are not men and the respect for competition is gone from the game if you wanna stop the high flying elbows bring respect back to the game and that starts at the dinner table folks.
Until we see mom and dad teaching respect rather than the big contract it will only get worse. Anyway get rid of the equipment size and hardness and stop micro managing the game and it will sort itself out . Stop calling the hooking, and all of. That lighten up and the cheap high stick and the behind the scenes chippy stuff will sort itself out.
Let em fight let the goons protect the stars and all will be o.k.
I love fighting it I really is a parton the game so let em play. Just bring respect back to the game in all areas on and off the ice.
It’s complete and utter bs that Canadian players somehow play a more fair game than those “cheating and elbowing Europeans”.
(Remember Rob Niedermayer’s cheap shot on Peter Forsberg? Remember Bobby Clarke deliberately injuring Kharlamov? Absolutely disgusting!)
And, pete, if players like Gretsky, Crosby and Sedin can’t take a (legal) hit, why are they playing hockey? As you say, hockey is a contact sport, so all players (incl goal scorers) must be prepared for a physical game. Good players don’t need goons to protect them (I don’t recall e.g. Sundin or Howe needing an enforcer for protection…).
It’s really pathetic to hear people cheer when two idiots are fighting it out alone, for no particular reason, while the rest of the two teams are happily chatting with each other on the sidelines.
It’s one thing to exchange some punches in the heat if the battle, it’s something totally different to engage in meaningless theatrical posturing.
Gave up on most of the hockey, the fighting is allowed because it’s good for TV, although getting your multi-million dollar player lights punched out by a goon seems a waste of investments. As for ticket prices, make sporting events a non business expense and you will see prices go down. Pretty much everyone I know who goes to the games get invited to a company box or the tickets were bought by a company.
Typical leftard activism – wanting to control something they probably never played, understand or watched.
Fighting in hockey is inevitable. It is the natural flare up of temperment in the fastest paced most demanding team sport in the world. Yeah the world, so Fyou soccer faggots.
Yes the days of Shiro’s broadstreet bullies was a low point in the game, and goonery should be and has been largely irradicated from the game – but you still have to be tough to play this game with the intensity it takes to win and you have to be prepared to protect yourself and your team from physical damage.
A modified form of Eddie Shore hockey is what we play here, not some commie pussified scripted ballet on ice where the refs decide who wins. Get that right out yo head!
Lefty, I put up with a lot of your BS but if you frig with our national sport, I’m comin’ for ya gloves off.
All of you who think the cheap shots of Canadian hockey are OK should watch what happens to Sidney Crosby. Today’s hockey has bigger players and far more hitting than it had a generation ago. The NHL needs to come down hard on cheap shots so we can get back to a game of skating, passing, checking and shooting.
Radical progressives only pretends to abhor violence on the surface, it’s obviously a favorite tactic in reality.
NHL Announces New Rules:
Oh, and pete @ 10:01 and paul @ 1:18 are right: ya gotta protect the talent. And paul’s insight is dead on: the root of the problem with the (post)modern game is the lack of respect for players and their talent. The seeds of this disrespect are sown in our schools, where our children are forced to play by the new rule: Mediocrity is the new excellence; genuine excellence is a crime. (BTW: this also explains the increase in bullying in our schools—an epidemic caused by our “educators”. (Someone should tell Charles Adler.))
KevinB.
You’re absolutely correct.
How could I have missed that?
Third view: Why would I bother watching this when I could be out with my cameras creating images? I don’t hate hockey or hate the people who enjoy it, I just have … other interests.
Never much liked watching sports. I prefer doing them. So pretty much anything to do with professional teams etc. I just don’t care.
I think fighting in -kids- hockey should be firmly squelched, but that’s a different issue. Fair play is an important lesson in life, and one that’s increasingly not being taught.

I call bull. First off How would you know that, were you around a generation ago? I have vivid memories of watching the original six in action and anything went in those days. I can move forward in History and point to the “Broadstreet bullies” of Philadelphia, that team perpetrated pure violence on the ice. Nice try Tilden.

Bigger players? BS! Cheap shots? Like say – Ace Baily, or the Rocket, or Corneyier, or Bobby Orr or, Ted Green, or Lindros or Lemieux – all the superstars from day one had the other teams gunning for them tring to neutralize their edge with constant harassment, hard checks and occasional cheap shots.
Its gonna happen – gear up and man up for it. The early super stars wore no helmets so what’s the excuse now? When Pocklington bought Gretzki, Sather always had a goon on with him protecting his pansy ass. The greats, like Orr and Lemieux were too fast to be shadowed by a protector and they suffered short careers because they played forward of their protection – that’s the game. Howe lasted because he could hand out as good as he got.
You have to be tough smart and fast to last in this game and Crosby wasn’t smart enough to keep his head up and wasn’t tough enough to skate solo.
Learn the history of the game before you offer silly solutions. We have so many rules now the refs literally pick the winners.
Yes, Mot, I was around a generation ago. My uncle was an NHL player — Montreal Maroons. Canadiens, Bruins and Red Wings. As a kid, I met all the great hockey players of my time and was a big fan of Hockey Night in Canada. And it all came home to me in the early games of the ’72 series when the Russians were out-skating the Canadians, setting up passing patterns that left the NHL guys huffing and puffing and generally out-playing them. These were the glory years of Bobby Clark and the Flyers goon squad, and the years when Bobby Orr’s knees were constantly being clipped from behind, so maybe we have to go back a little farther for cleaner hockey, back into the early 1960s. Toronto developed the “shoot it into the end and thrash around for the puck” kind of hockey, and Gretsky was one of the few who used skating skills to exploit it. Today’s hockey is almost unwatchable. It’s all size and no style, and when a kid comes along who has real skills — a Crosby — the goons set out to disable him.
I’ll leave you with this:

Why do teachers make less then hockey players?
Well school is an endurance test, kinda like state mandated chinese boredom torture. High school is a mockery of learning and university is (generally, not always) an expensive work avoidance program.
Hockey is fun and voluntary, Entertaining and I could go thru life with out hearing word one out of the mouths of any given player.
I don’t think they should get rid of fighting. But a brawl before the puck has even dropped is ridiculous. Staged fights should not be allowed, either. A fight breaking out in the heat of the game is alright by me. That’s what it was like when I played in the “O”.
The game is being forced pussified by owners and governors of the league in a vain attempt at supposedly curbing violence. In doing so they have created an atmosphere that fosters more extreme violence, the kind of violence that ends players careers. Letting the players police the game is the way that keeps players honest. The mantra that comes from the league and then parroted by the politically correct morons in the media is that the players are bigger, stronger and faster. That may be so but they neglect to mention that the players are also less skilled. The Canadian game is all but gone, and instead is replaced by a copy cat version of American style college hockey that serves the illusion of the game being faster, although it is not. The so called bigger stronger, faster players now wear equipment that is down right deadly and dangerous to the players well being. Shoulder pads and elbow pads are obscenely dangerous and should be considered weapons. The game is being run by those that don’t understand it and have probably never played it, that in itself is a dangerous proposition. I prefer the traditions of the game and it’s Canadian roots. Those that invented the game, nurtured it and understood it knew that toughness, and yes fighting, played a role in keeping everyone on the ice honest and that it was better to drop you’re stick and gloves rather then clobbering someone over the head with you’re stick or taking a flying elbow to the head. I wish there was 2 leagues, one with the rules from the 1950’s 60’s etc. that had fighting without the instigator rule along with more realistic equipment and wooden sticks, then a real comparison could be made to showcase which league was actually more violent and which league had more catastrophic injuries to they’re star players. I have no doubt that the league that played the Canadian game would have less injuries to their stars and a much more entertaining game, with all the nuance and artistry that has been lost. Unfortunately, that won’t happen and the continual drift to a more violent, without real toughness, American style college hockey, Euro weanie game will continue unabated regardless of what hockey fans and hockey players really want. At one time referees refereed, now they “manage” the game, at one time players decided how the game played out, now it’s the suits in New York. IMHO the game was less violent, less dangerous and far more entertaining in the past, then the pussy BS that passes for hockey these days.
