This Is Not Your Grandma’s Humane Society

A politician who gets it:

In March 7 comments at the Nebraska Cattlemen symposium in Lexington, [Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman] said of the HSUS: “We’re going to kick your ass and send you out of the state.”
And in a speech in Washington in January, he called upon farm-focused lawmakers from across the country to fight the HSUS.
“I’m a graduate of West Point. I’m an Army Ranger,” Heineman said then. “This guy (Pacelle) wants to engage in guerrilla warfare, I’ll teach him a thing or two.”
In a December 2010 speech to the Cattlemen, Heineman said he didn’t trust Pacelle and his organization. “No deals. No compromise,” the governor said.

  1. Mike Rowe’s excellent video presentation came to mind. There’s a bunch of different takes on it, but this is the one I clicked on. Another version of he speech was a link of the day, but it’s well worth posting again. The difference between “this is in the animal’s best interests” and “this is what is best for the animal” in the view of groups like the humane society and then the farmer is quite stark.

  2. Good for Heineman. Like most activist groups, the HSUS started out with good intentions and then loses control to the radical elements comprised of professional busybodies that live for the chance to control every aspect of someone elses life. I would bet 95% of their members are urban and know nothing about ranching.

  3. Once oligarchs like Soros buys up farm land for pennies on the dollar after family farms are destroyed, large industrial farms will spring up populated with cheap foreign labour. These animal rights groups will sink back into the shadows.

  4. “The governor says he wants to kick us out,” she said. “Where does he want us to go?”
Hell would be a good start.

  5. PeterJ – very true. Any organization that has been around for over 20 years and grown will IMHO go through a lot of mission creep. Patrick Moore’s discussion about the differences between Greenpeace now and when he helped found it is a good example.

  6. There is massive change taking place in the ag business. Takeovers, mergers, and new players emerge on almost a daily basis as food becomes the new gold.
It’s in the rational self interest of producers to properly care for the stock they supply the market with. Being lectured by those that monitor the puppy factory crowd adds nothing to the debate.
Good on the gov. Hope he kicks some ass.

  7. Note, though, how the press story practically read like an HSUS news release? Non-profit? Heh.
The governor gets it. The press, not so much.

  8. “We’re going to kick your ass and send you out of the state.”
Glad to see a Republican who knows how to deal with the radical left, rather than accepting their absurd premises and giving them 50% of what they want.
Send the HSUS back to Occupy with NOTHING.

  9. Walter- you’re welcome, but the thanks go to SDA for introducing me to it in the first place. Contrary to the trollish view, one can learn a lot from the posts (and comments) here.

  10. “We’re going to kick your ass and send you out of the state.”
Cattle prods should speed that up!

  11. PETA is another one that lost its way long ago. Its a business that started by Ingrid Newkirk 30 years ago with 5 vegetarians and a lot of good intentions. It now has more than 300 full time employees , more than 2 million followers and a budget exceeding 37 million dollars. They kill 95% of the animals they “save”. Looking after animals or trying to find homes for them cuts into profits.

  12. Man, I’m glad another politician can talk tough like Hudak!
Seriously though, here’s the problem that farmers face, whether it’s in Nebraska or Ontario: their farm organizations are sleeping with the enemy.
“In October, the HSUS and the Nebraska Farmers Union agreed to partner on an effort to promote animal agriculture that refrains from practices deemed cruel by the animal welfare group.”
You give this crowd one inch of quarter to your ever-lasting detriment.
