California’s has an economy worth about $1.8 trillion annually give or take. On the other hand, Ontario’s GDP is roughly $580 billion dollars. In 2009-2010 fiscal year, California, which is the fiscal pariah of the US, ran a deficit of $26.3 billion. It nows has a total state debt of about
$72 billion. Pretty bad, eh? Ontario ran a budget deficit in the same year of $21.3 billion to add to a total provincial debt of about $220 billion. Keep mind Cali has about 3 times the population of Ontario. Cali’s debt to GDP ratio is about 4%. Ontario’s is 37%. Cali has about $1,950 of debt per person. Ontario? Around $17,000/person. So I guess we can keep smug in the realization our fiscal situation in Canada is so much better than that of the United States.

  2. Kevin, remember the good old days when the Toronto Star et al insisted that Ernie Eves needed to be defeated mainly because of the possibility of a $5.6 billion deficit projected if they did nothing to reduce it?
Ontario and California are suffering from the same problem, powerful public service unions able to influence elections through numbers, spending, and a compliant media. Add to that the drug addled hippy green movement…

  3. Tax refugees. How will they pay for all the services illegal are sucking up? When enough Americans have left wanna bet La Raza will claim the state for Mexico? Wanna bet Obama signs it over?
The US is in a shitestorm right now with 2 back to back administrations of the worst leadrship the nation has ever seen. There is word coming from Canada immigration we are getting US economic refuge traffic here.

  4. California has a bigger economy than Canada. DemocRats in California seem to be doing everything in their power to make sure it doesn’t stay that way.
Save 40% of costs by moving to Texas? That’s nothing, imagine moving to China. They pay you!
Its a race to see who can frig up their country faster, the California Dems or the Canadian Libs. Dems have efficiency of scale on their side, Libs have the bone-hard stupid on theirs.
You know, if the Mexicans were smart they’d build a huge frickin’ container port in Baja and a giant rail line to Yuma Arizona, bypass California entirely. Move Pacific container freight into the rest of the USA at half the cost of California ports and get stinking rich doing it.
Or, you know, WE could do it in BC. If we were smart. Which it seems we’re not.
Three words Mr. Prime Minister: Tunnel Boring Machines. If the Swiss can drill four lane highways through the Alps and the Brits can tunnel under the English Channel, Canada ought to be able to dig a couple holes under the Rockies to run some trains. And oh! maybe a couple pipelines!
Because gee whiz, what happens if a pipeline leaks inside a tunnel under a mountain? Nuttin’.

  5. Liberal extremists are fine with the loss of evil, polluting businesses if the comments section of articles about California are any indication, they’re glad to see them go. Over his next few terms as President, Obama can simply borrow more money and hand it to them, no?

  6. One of the most persistent delusions amongst politicians is that doubling tax rates will double tax revenues.
The problem with this is (1) people change their behaviour in reaction to changes in the tax code, and (2) even if they didn’t change their behaviour, more taxes act as a drag on the economy.

  7. I wouldn’t be concerned if libs stayed behind in the left wing utopias they create but they never do. They move to conservative jurisdictions like Texas or Alberta and start f*&#@ing it up all over again. Libs have virtually no learning curve. It’s slash and burn politics, picking up and moving once they’ve ravaged the landscape to begin all over again in their new jurisdiction.

  8. I am sure Canada is quite beautiful, however, after living in Louisi-Yana for 58 years those 6 month long winters might get to me.

  9. “When enough Americans have left wanna bet La Raza will claim the state for Mexico?”
You know, something about “La Raza” that I have always found oddly irrational is that its adherents came to the US Southwest to flee the economic and criminal mess that is Mexico and now demand that the US Southwest be “returned” to Mexico.
    Huh?

  10. The other thing about California’s future is that the still-falling housing market will continue to drag down revenues for years to come. Property taxes I believe are calculated [at least in many jurisdictions] at 1.3% of most recent selling price. So, as houses which 5 years ago sold for $800G finally re-sell at $400G, Cali’s property tax revenues take a 50% kick in the groin.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of lefties.

  11. Kevin, if you can point me to a serious fault line that could solve the problems of Ontario, I’ll be happy to add the province to my rotation.
