  1. I love how the bloggers are going “mainstream” with their radio shows and sometimes television. By doing this, they capture the luddites (I am a former luddite) and some of the regular people who listen to talk radio as they drive for a living or as they drive around town. Good work guys!

  5. You pay 42M for something that will be worth 21M when the warranty expires. At the ten year mark you will be driving toxic waste on wheels with zero trade in value and when it finally craps out completely you will have to write out a big cheque and fill out 4 or five forms just to get it hauled away. What’s not to like ?

  6. Got this by email. Have not checked out the numbers but worth passing along.
    Cost to operate a Chevy Volt
    Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel’s Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.
    For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
    Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery.
    So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles.
    It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours.
    In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
    According to General Motors, the Volt battery hold 16 kwh
    of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
    The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
    I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.
    16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.
    $18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery.
    Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32 mpg.
    $3.19 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.
    The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000………
    So Government wants us to pay 3 times as much, for a car that costs more that 7 times as much to run, and takes 3 times longer to drive across country….. REALLY ?????

  7. peterj: who are you buying your electric power from? $1.16/ kwh. Off the top of my head, even the high rate from BC Hydro is less than $0.10 kwh.
    Can I sell you some for $0.50 kwh?

  8. We didn’t abandon windmills back in the 1930 because we ran outa wind….anymore than we left the stone age because we ran outa rocks. nuf said.
    Some of the most popular automobiles circa were steam and electrics…..nuf said….
    Farmers switched from horses to gasoline tractors not because they liked noise…..the land needed to support the horses produced produce that more than paid for the gasoline and upkeep on the tractor that didn’t eat all winter. nuf said.

  12. Looks like I should have checked out the math before posting the Volt email as the elect rate posted seems way out of line for USA or Canada. USA:

  13. I live in Ontario and my electricity is supplied by Hydro 1. Yes off- peak power is $0.062 per kWh.
    However, the driver of my costs is not electricity, but delivery charges which are $0.09 per kWh. Add to this the Stranded debt cost which was originally to pay off the Nuc. plants costs overruns and etc. but now are a slush fund for McGuinty mismangagement and overruns. Oh, yes there is also the regulatory charges. Add them all up and add the HST. $0.062per kWh is an illusion!

  14. Reminds me of a movie for the 80’s with Danny DeVito as a big money guy buying out a wire and rope company to close it down, with the volt around I bet they would be busy like a one armed paper hanger now. hahaha

    You are correct about the extra cost of Delivery/Debt Retirement charges but for Toronto Hydro these amount to approx. $0.0384 per kWh. The remainder of the extra charges are fixed charges (excl. HST).
