The CTF’s annual waste recognition event – the Teddy Waste Awards – are approaching and we need your help.
This is the biggest media event of the year that blows the whistle on government waste. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. And nothing will change unless we put wastrels in the spotlight and demand better from those charged with managing our tax dollars.
The worst wrongdoers – the most specious spendthrifts at the local, provincial and federal level – are singled out for a Teddy – the golden sow, a handsome gilded symbol of government waste and extravagance of the highest order.
And that’s where we need your help. Have you heard of a local, provincial or national story of government waste that you think deserves to be nominated for a Teddy?
If you have a great nominee please email us at: research@taxpayer.com

Dolt McGuinty’s Liberal Ontario:
* starting, almost (but NOT) completing and then mothballing TWO new power plants in the GTA, wasted $1 billion EACH
* the current / ongoing ORNGE helicopter flights, hundred of millions
* the Samsung giant windmills deal
* eHealth, although that may have been 2011’s waste
I kinda like the multibillion Alberta plan to capture CO2 and pipeline it around and store it somewhere. How’s that coming along anyway?
Alison Redford Progressive Conservative Premier of Alberta, is spending up to $16 Billion transmission line project her generous budget to increase spending ahead of a provincial election. Using outrageous energy revenue projections to support her spending spree.
Fishing Lake Flood.
I submitted the $172,000 irrigation system the city of Prince Albert installed a few months before the water treatment plant broke down and we received a mandatory boil water order (three weeks now).
Moore/Lacroix can share one for the CBC.
I think the billions that Alberta is spending on electrical transmission lines is a waste. We have coal and natural gas everywhere. Just build powerplants where the power is needed. Not a difficult concept. Mind you we all suspect it is about having local consumers pay for lines so Tory friends can export power south.
The City of Calgary’s Peace Bridge, which is supposed to cost only $25 million – but is 18 months behind schedule. It doesn’t replace another pedestrian bridge – it is literally a couple hundred yards downstream of an existing bridge (that is in working order). Awarded to a famous architect without a tender.
It’s not big money but in BC the Ministry of Social Development is redoing their welfare case management system with Siebel. Deloite is doing the work. They’ve apparently blown close to 30 million dollars so far… chicken feed really but trust me it’s a boondoggle. They’re paying $200 an hour for developers IN INDIA. The product doesn’t do what is required either. Anyway it’s the joke of the town here in Victoria. Everyone knows what a scam it is in the IT sector. 30 million for nothing.
Of course the $$$BILLIONS flushed down the crapper subsidizing rural conservative welfare bum farmers….. but the right wing yahoos at the CTF are as hypocritical as SDA, as right wing hypocrites are wont to be…so what does this Teddy nonsense really mean?
phil, think of it as a fossil award without the free publicity, and without political affiliation judging by the comments prior to yours.
Farmers aren’t naturally Conservatives. It took 2 or 3 generations of Liberals to make them that way.
Of course the $$$BILLIONS flushed down the crapper subsidizing rural conservative welfare bum farmers…

Be a bit more careful, Phil. Put a large C on conservative.
I think jack layton should get a posthumous award for his lifetime achievement of taxpayer waste.
I think that the Liberal Party of Canada should get the award for being able to steal $45M from taxpayers, admit to it, not be charged with theft and then never paying back a penny of it. Meanwhile, they’re collection interest on it and keeping that too.
Now that is profitable waste!!!

You forgot the feather the nest Gun Registry, complete with massive spending on computer files. Money that was spent but not accounted for ….and then they all retired.
