  1. Ah the dance! I remember back to the high school days when a slow song was called a “dry boner”.

  2. No joke – the story of my life is in that essay. Average looking guy, average income, average everything growing up, but with more dates than anybody I knew, JUST from the dancing.
Now 63, and the dancing STILL gets ’em!

  3. Wow Captain. You bring back old memories for me.
I danced with women back in the days when you used to hold women in your arms, not sway with a partner who was half way across the room.
We even had slow dances in those days.
But there is a protocol for slow dancing with a woman in your arms.
    Don’t chew gum.
A friend of mine was dancing with a woman and his gum got caught in her hair. He panicked and tried to chew it off.
She was offended thinking he was making a move, and walked off the floor.
He blew the joint before the poor woman has an opportunity to go to the powder room.

  4. I never thought of it in those terms, but he’s right. As a tango dancer there’s also the technical aspect of actually learning the tango to be able to perform it on the dance floor. It’s something the lady has to earn — a pretty potent lure!

  5. Hey Captain, kick ass post.
BTW.. my gal and I signed up for a ballroom class recently but it’s packed and I hate it.
So my question is.. what would you recommend for two antisocial novices that need enough skill to get through black tie events? Our resources include time, space and a stereo.

  6. I had to teach my half-Ukrainian wife (then girl friend) to polka. Then came the Mexican Hat Dance; anybody remember ‘The Lancers’ or the ‘Butterfly’? Dang, I don’t have the energy for that stuff any more – still have the same wife though after 45 years.

  7. Marco,
I actually have my old instructional DVD’s I can always burn a copy for you and mail it. What do you want? I have swing, salsa, ballroom and latin. They’re not “grand” as they assume you’ve taken the class already, but they’re at least something.
    Cpt.
