Parts of the Black Sea froze near the Romanian coastline and the rare snow fell on Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea. In Bulgaria, 16 towns recorded their lowest temperatures since records started 100 years ago as four more people were reported dead from hypothermia.
In central Serbia, choppers pulled out 12 people, including nine who went to a funeral but then could not get back over icy, snow-choked roads. Two more people froze to death in the snow and two others are missing, bringing that nation’s death toll to five.
“The situation is dramatic, the snow is up to five meters (16 1/2 feet) high in some areas, you can only see rooftops,” said Dr. Milorad Dramacanin, who participated in the helicopter evacuations.

    It’s about time that the Warm-ongers admitted that anthropogenic CO2 increases do not force temperature to rise and that there was no need for governments to subsidize alternate energy schemes.

  12. Not sure how British sheep got into this discussion, no snow falling in the British Isles, and in fact they are only getting the margins of this deep freeze, the main thrust of this cold wave is southwest into France and even Spain.
    Expect to see some images of snow falling on the coast of the Med and even in higher parts of Algiers, and frost in subtropical locations in southern Spain. The impacts on Britain will be rather minimal as it just gets moderately cold. Could snow east of London in Kent perhaps because of a disturbance moving through France. And it may snow ahead of a warming trend this weekend.
    I think it’s just a few elitist professors who can’t handle cold in the UK and Ireland, most of the people seem just fine with it (I know because I am on weather forums there) — and they have had far worse in the past. The winter of 1947 is recalled for severe snowfalls that blocked most roads and railways for weeks. We really haven’t seen anything on that scale in recent cold spells.
    The snow in central Europe however is a different story, that is record-breaking in places. I think the worst of the cold has been in Ukraine and Poland so far.

  15. Electricity rates have soared over there. People on fixed incomes have very little income and for a lot of people the choice is food or heat. Unfortunately you can’t burn coal anymore and there is an abundance of it under their feet. When you get into the areas where people aren’t as well off as some they have coin operated electrical heaters in their apartments. Coins run out, heats turned off.
    I pisses me off to no end to see people who worked their whole lives knocking on doors to borrow a coin so they can turn the heat on for an hour.

  30. I find this very difficult to believe, Kate.
    I’m sure if there really was a killer cold wave hitting Eastern Europe and the UK and Alaska and Korea, I’m sure I would have seen such stories lead newscasts and highlight front pages instead of stories about how mild winter’s been in Toronto so far this season.

  32. If 1500 people are going to die because of the cold, then I expect we’ll see the majority of the British population succumb to the 30+ C warming that is going to occur this summer. We all know that heat is far deadlier than cold and the only way to stop it is to totally stop driving, using electricity and to eat only locally grown organic vegetables.
    It may be too late and the warming expected during the next 4-5 months will greatly exceed that of the 2 C degree warming that the IPCC says will doom the planet. Guess the Mayans really did know how to predict the future. Either that, or Gaia’s ensuring that the Euro-watermelons freeze in the dark to punish them for constructing bird blenders.
