  1. L – Without all those data centres, does that mean the bureaucrats will have to think for themselves?

How much public money is being incinerated in this, the second dot.com bubble?

With Chamath becoming a billionaire(?) and Elon Musk working on his 2nd Trillion, and Carney’s America First portfolio. Canada’s ship of state is in trans-ition, so to dock in Brussels.
So, who is looking after Canada’s provincial interest?

  2. l entered the IT field in 1970 as a mainframe computer operator.
ah the old PDP-10. l was so attuned to the goings on of that 100K $10,000,000 beast one day it called out to me in desperation, it was under terrible stress. l was at a loss what to make of it.
    then it crashed.
part of my BSc comp sci studies consisted of commandeering the job status display system and using it to do my assignment. for which l was chastised on Monday by my boss. we had a bit of a chuckle when l pointed out l was the only operator of 4 that knew how to do it and assured him l wdnt again.
l read the link and have scant understanding of the lingo. lm officially ‘out of it’ now.

  3. You’d have to be blind to have not seen this coming. Let’s just hope the coming crash in all these AI/data center stocks doesn’t take the whole rest of the economy with it.

  4. Kritter. Dad was a custom engineer for IBM back in 1970.
As for AI: I’m sure there are more than a few of us who remember……..,

  5. For the old timers, VI and eMacs are still all over everything in AI and cloud-level hardware. If you ran a VT100 terminal you can still get by.

  6. I’ve been scolded for saying there are already hundreds of Data Centers in the SF Bay Area … and nobody ever complained or even noticed. I was told … yeah, but those are ‘small’ data centers … not the ‘mega’ Data centers that BIG TECH is building in the hinterlands.

To which I say … do the hinterlands want a proliferation of hundreds ‘small’ Data Centers so virtually EVERYONE gets to share the burden? Or ONE ‘mega’ Data Center strategically placed?

It’s very much like the difference between building ONE big fossil fuel power plant … strategically placed away from human habitation … or covering the landscape in wind towers and solar panel cities.

Or … is your choice to say NO Data Centers! Never! Don’t help the BIG TECH oligarch Billionaires! Yeah! Fight BIG TECH to their death! That’ll show em …
