Canada could face an Arab Spring-style ‘uprising’ if Prime Minister Stephen Harper doesn’t give a clear indication in his meeting with aboriginal leaders here Tuesday that he’s prepared to take their concerns seriously, (B.C. native leader Stewart Phillip) warned Monday….(Phillips) predicted a largely peaceful uprising along the lines of the U.S. Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, but through using social media…

  2. The Boston Herald’s Howie Carr:
“The Republican primary voters have this dream of a snarling Newt disemboweling Barack Obama in the debates this fall. Talk about myths. How many debates is Barack going to agree to? Two maybe, tops, and both of them will be MSNBC-style — ‘Mr. Gingrich, when did you stop beating your first ex-wife?’ Follow-up: ‘When you did you stop beating your second ex-wife?’
“To the ‘Jersey Shore’ MTV crowd, Newt would come across as a fat, nasty, pasty old man. They’re not going to realize what a boob Barack is, because they’re boobs, too.”

  3. Stewart Philip, is, and always has been a self-victimizing, bloviating, native racist, that others within the native community distance themselves from.
Unfortunately, he does speak for far too many FN peoples, who find it easier to blame ol’ whitey for their own laziness, and sloth, and slef-hate.
On the other hand, there is Chief Clarence Louie, someone leading a great example of where FN peoples could, and should be.

  4. CBC is conducting a telephone survey asking if you think they are doing a good job. They called me this afternoon. Unfortunately, it is just a 1 for yes, 2 for no type: so you don’t get to tell them what you really think of them.

  5. George Will talks about why Newt Gingrich will ruin everything for the GOP and himself: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/01/23/george-f-will-only-thing-gop-has-to-fear-is-lack-of-fear-at-gingrich-victory/
I like this quote: Just 11 days after finishing fourth in New Hampshire, Gingrich’s pugnacity in two debates enraptured South Carolinians, especially when he waxed indignant about the supposition that the risk-taking in his personal life — e.g., having an affair during an indignation festival against Bill Clinton — is pertinent to his fitness for the presidency. Gingrich encourages Republican voters to believe he should be nominated because he would do best in the (at most) three debates with Barack Obama. So, because Gingrich might sparkle during four and a half hours of debates, he should be given four years of control of nuclear weapons? Odd.

  7. I can only speak for myself about the Romney-Gingrich race. I would love nothing more than for Romney to come out of his shell and start fighting for what conservative Americans want. But to date he has been boring, appearing to mouth well tested talking points rather than espousing any sincerity of his own.
I fully understand why many pundits detest Gingrich but rather than pulling bogeyman cards about Newt then instead should be insisting that Romney start evolving beyond a McCain 2.0 clone.

  8. someone hit the nail on the head…now we needc to hand out hammers up here when the cbc comes calling…

There are two things the Republicans, en masse, should learn from Newt Gingrich, and the eventual Republican candidate would be wise to make a note and follow through:
    1. The mainstream media will NEVER like conservatives and will always do what they can to prop up Obama and the left. Being ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ gets you nothing but rolled by them. Period. Accept this as a fact and move on.
    2. We do not have to take their shit! Newt is ahead because he’s calling them out for the biased Obamatrons they are, and when he does, they visibly cower.
Conservatives have two opponents in this election – Obama and the leftist in the media. Here are TWO easy lines every Republican running for office needs to memorize and USE, because they work.
What kind of question is that? [and say what YOU want to say, not what the questioner wants]
Have you ever considered asking President Obama [or insert name of opponent] that question? [Then proceed to outline how Obama would be forced to reply to the same question, had he been asked]
These two questions will put the press under the heat lamp, illustrate their bias, point out why Obama should be asked the question, and get OUR message out there. By and large, these idiot reporters are wussies and will back down when confronted with the truth.

  9. PJ Media’s Christian Adams:

Believe it or not (and I didn’t think it possible), Mormonism was one reason Romney lost South Carolina. Exit polls show that most South Carolina voters wanted a candidate that shared similar religious views. Romney lost big among those voters…This does not bode well for Romney’s electability in the fall. Evangelicals are the base of the GOP. If they stay home, Republicans lose, like they did when they nominated the moderate John McCain. But more importantly, Catholics may decide this election in places like Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania. And the Catholic Church makes no secret of its view of Mormonism.”

    Emo Phillips:

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said “Stop! don’t do it!” “Why shouldn’t I?” he said. I said, “Well, there’s so much to live for!” He said, “Like what?” I said, “Well…are you religious or atheist?” He said, “Religious.” I said, “Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?” He said, “Christian.” I said, “Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?” He said, “Baptist!” I said,”Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?” He said, “Baptist church of god!” I said, “Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?” He said,”Reformed Baptist church of god!” I said, “Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?” He said, “Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!” I said, “Die, heretic scum”, and pushed him off.

  10. Vladimir Putin:
“The colossal immigration flows – and we have every reason to assume that they will continue to grow – are already being referred to as the new ‘Great Human Migration’, capable of shifting the familiar structure and image of entire continents….Some of the world’s most developed and prosperous countries, which had previously boasted about their tolerance, have come face-to-face with the ‘intensification of the national question’. And today, one after another, they have had to admit their failure to integrate outside cultural elements into society and ensure a peaceful, harmonious interaction between various cultures, religions, and ethnic groups.
“The ‘melting pot’ of assimilation is stalling and smoking, unable to ‘digest’ the growing migration flow. In politics, a reflection of this fact has been ‘multiculturalism’, which rejects the notion of integration through assimilation. It elevates the ‘right of minorities to be different’ to the absolute and, at the same time, fails to balances this right with civil, behavioral, and cultural obligations with regard to the indigenous population and society as a whole…”
    The whole thing here.

  11. My Dad sang a version of “Strawberry Roan” where the girls rides him. “She ‘lows her old Grandma could ride him to town, take a setting of eggs to old Widow Brown”. I haven’t been able to find that one on Youtube. Would love to hear it again.

The Winnipeg-based clothing manufacturer’s lawsuit against the CBC will forge ahead, despite three separate attempts by the state broadcaster to see it quashed.”
“A separate criminal suit was also launched last April in Winnipeg, with lawyers for Nygard launching a direct criminal prosecution for defamatory libel against the CBC and three of its employees — including Fifth Estate host Bob McKeown.”

“It’s “dead heat” – Americans rate global warming last”
“It appears that only the zealots care much about global warming anymore, yet it doesn’t stop them from making grand pronouncements of gloom and doom or taking fossil fueled publicity stunt boat trips to Antarctica.
The Pew Research Center released its annual poll today, and global warming is not only last, it’s last in importance with the public in 20 topics covered. Those who think “Climategate” had no impact, think again. Plus, energy problems get twice as much attention as global warming as a policy issue. Essentially, global warming is now “dead heat”.
They write in the press release:
As the 2012 State of the Union approaches, the public continues to give the highest priority to economic issues.”

Thats a Putin speech which like Ken said is full of good points. Unfortunately for us, can you think of any of our national leaders or pretenders making anything similar?
I think it underlines why so many in the ‘west’ under estimate him. He is the archetypal Russian leader, strong, a full grasp of history, especially his countries and peoples history and playing the long game, a very long game with its focus devoted to the country and people.

  16. Watched an interview on the ceeb with Darryl Hannah spouting off about the oil sands. She claims that she does not use oil. My question would be, when she travels around the world does she Ginger and Mary Ann it up and go by bamboo bicycle. Do believe Gilligan was brighter.

  17. @EBD:
It’s not just the evangelicals; Romney will also have a lot of problems getting any significant Catholic vote. Probably can’t. Ergo, not electable.

Paddy Power, Ireland’s biggest bookmaking operation, is giving 8-1 odds that “We have more work to do” will be the first cliche the president is likely to drop. Next-most likely are “As I stand here today,” and “health care reform” — though given the usual structure of State of the Union speeches, that latter one will likely be saved for the last half of the speech.”

  20. Robert W. @11:48 – (slightly) shorter Salutin: Look, a lot of your sleazier pols are lefties, so sleaze is okay by me. Plus, people with drsgusting personal lives often try to compensate by saving the world through politics. That never turns out badly. And Rick Santorum seems arrogant because he claims to have moral values, which is creepy.
Also, corporations are evil and Americans aren’t as civilized as Canadians.

There was a blond haired, blue eyed girl in our town that was like that. No one could ride her. Then along came a big burly oil field worker. The rest is history!!

  23. Unforseen consequences. This is out of the Davos meeting.
An unusual side-effect of the debt crisis: rising oil prices and tough economic times are causing Greeks to chop down trees for winter warmth, warn forest engineers.
Nikos Bokaris, a spokesman for the Panhellenic Union of Forest Engineers, said the debt-wracked nation’s forest ecosystems were not yet under threat, but urged the government to act quickly to prevent broader damage:
“You have to remember what happened in Albania,” Bokaris said, describing how that country’s population felled trees en masse after the collapse of communism. “Even the trees lining the roads were chopped down.”
Greek foresters filed 1,500 criminal complaints about illegal logging last year, twice as many as in 2010.

regarding your link about newt/obama debates
my opinion is the debate newt will start amongst Americans is the greatest asset to his campaign. Obama can avoid a debate with Newt, but not with the American people.
The bottom line is… the debates vs newt will be the only place he can refutiate the message newt’s going to send. why? because newt’s message is correct.

  25. the US’s biggest problem is spreading here..it’s the ‘pay me for existing’ generation…and sadly, it’s becoming the new normal, especially since ‘bama is on record as saying that unemployment cheques will create more ‘jobs’ than building a pipeline….
    http://www.zerohedge.com/article/entitlement-america-head-household-making-minimum-wage-has-more-disposable-income-family-mak
in the article, a family on minimum wage making $14,000 from working has more disposable income after all gov’t programs are factored in, than a family making $60,000 per year..and that’s before any chicanery with ‘disabilities’ and under-the-table work…
I see it here, the unemployed live in nice houses and drive new trucks, 4-wheelers and snowmobiles while those who work 40-hour weeks plus overtime barely scrape by since they don’t get any gov’t cheques or access to any programs or refundable tax credits to pad their incomes.

  26. Frog-wakin; sun-fishin; chuck; terms I’m sure most born after 1960 have never heard of. We had a retired bronc buster working for my dad for a while. He could take a quiet farm steed and and have it leaping for the sky in no time. One time that quiet farm old steed threw him into a snow bank. We all cheered.
The singer was Roy Rogers; one of the best Western singers as far as I’m concerned.

The accepted narrative of why Megaupload was taken down is that it was to be made an example of— that the US government wanted to show that it was going after file-sharing sites hard and it was going after one of the big ones in a big way.
But the developing theory is that Megaupload’s file sharing was an excuse to have the site taken down before they could launch Megabox, a cloud-based music store that would have offered better money for artists at cheaper prices to consumers, striking directly at the heart of Apple and Google:
In December of 2011, just weeks before the takedown, Digital Music News reported on something new that the creators of #Megaupload were about to unroll. Something that would rock the music industry to its core.
I present to you… MegaBox. MegaBox was going to be an alternative music store that was entirely cloud-based and offered artists a better money-making opportunity than they would get with any record label.
“UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations directly to consumers while allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings,” MegaUpload founder Kim ‘Dotcom’ Schmitz told Torrentfreak
Not only did they plan on allowing artists to keep 90% of their earnings on songs that they sold, they wanted to pay them for songs they let users download for free.
“We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free,” Dotcom outlined. “Yes that’s right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works.”
Megaupload had been friends with the music industry for years, and it’s certainly likely they could have pulled this off, easily. But were Google and Apple behind the scenes, prodding the US government to take them down?
