If this is remotely true, the calibrated soft-landing intended by Chinese authorities has gone badly wrong and risks spinning out of control.
    The growth of the M2 money supply slumped to 12.7pc in November, the lowest in 10 years. New lending fell 5pc on a month-to-month basis. The central bank has begun to reverse its tightening policy as inflation subsides, cutting the reserve requirement for lenders for the first time since 2008 to ease liquidity strains.
    The question is whether the People’s Bank can do any better than the US Federal Reserve or Bank of Japan at deflating a credit bubble.
    Chinese stocks are flashing warning signs. The Shanghai index has fallen 30pc since May. It is off 60pc from its peak in 2008, almost as much in real terms as Wall Street from 1929 to 1933.

    “UK police seize computers of skeptic blogger in England”
    The first blogger to break the Climategate2 story has had a visit from the police and has had his computers seized. Tallbloke’s Talkshop first reported on CG2 due to the timing of the release being overnight in the USA. Today he was raided by six UK police (Norfolk Constabulary and Metropolitan police) and several of his computers were seized as evidence. He writes:
    After surveying my ancient stack of Sun Sparcstations and PII 400 pc’s, they ended up settling for two laptops and an adsl broadband router. I’m blogging this post via my mobile.
    That means his cellphone. In his blog report are all the details. including actions in the US involving WordPress and the US Department of Justice. Jeff Id at The Air Vent also has a report here.
    Strange and troubling that they’d seize his computers for comments dropped onto a US service (wordpress.com) from the cloud. There wouldn’t be any record on his PC’s of the event from FOIA’s placing comments, that would be in the wordpress.com server logs.
    Either there’s more than meets the eye or they have no idea how the blog system works.
    UPDATE: I’ve been in contact with Roger (Tallbloke) and he tells me that he is not a suspect, and that they’ll clone his hard drives and return the computers to him. – Anthony”

    I am writing to inquire about whether Mars Foods has decided to enter the field of politics by canceling planned advertising (or refraining from future advertising) on Sun News network because of threats of a boycott by websites like http://bigcitylib.blogspot.com/ News is not always pretty. The story in question (according to the blog site) was about the contents of mandatory sexual education classes for elementary school students. I would judge this to be news, regardless of how distasteful some might find the contents of the story. Is Mars foods going to stay away from Sun News because of these political activists? If so, are you prepared for the results that your politically based decision will have among those of ! use who like having alternate news sources? I realize that this is a catch-22 for a company, and that you dislike having to make choices like this, but for many of us this is an issue of freedom. Starving news sources of advertising funding is a legal means of silencing alternative voices. As your “Bistro Express” rices are regulars on our table, I hope the the political agitator was not telling the truth on his blog.

    If I remember correctly,Uncle Ben/Mars is part of the Cadbury/Effem empire. They are a huge company.

  16. I am appalled at the Uncle Ben’s rice thing. I think everyone should write to Uncle Ben’s to complain and certainly stop buying the rice if they have allowed themselves to be coerced into withdrawing advertising for political reasons.
