  1. “Wheat board fight not over, chairman says”
That headline appeared on Cbc.Ca today. Cbc.Ca did not allow commenting on this story.

  2. I don’t like Rick Mercer, but this video was pretty cool, and I gotta admit, Mercer was pretty funny.

  3. Off topic, but this looks like a job for SDA.
“No Rice For Ezra: Uncle Ben’s Pulls Advertising From Sun TV!
    Dear Mr. Murphy,
Based on feedback from consumers such as yourself, UNCLE BEN’S will not be advertising on Sun TV in 2012.
We thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns and for your loyalty towards the UNCLE BEN’S brand.
If you wish to post a statement to your blog, please only post the above statement.
We thank you for your interest in our products.
    Regards,
Your Friends at MARS Canada Inc.”
I have already told Uncle Bens to shove their rice where the sun doesn’t shine.

  4. Just what did Mr. bcl Murphy whine about to Mars?
Does anyone have more on this?
I’ll fess up…I went to BCL last night but was too creeped to look around for more info.

  5. If one must watch Rick Mercer, it should be when he is holding cuddly baby bears.
It’s hard to believe those cute, little things will one maul a camper.
I guess I won’t be buying anything from Uncle Ben’s or Mars in the meantime.

  6. Ok, that was by far the best that Mercer ever did…I almost, kinda, sorta feel like thinking about forgiving his usual nonsense, perhaps.

  7. Beijing air goes from ‘hazardous’ to off the charts, literally
Pollution in Beijing has become one of the most hotly debated subjects on the Chinese web, with public outrage growing after stories surfaced that high-level government officials were equipped with expensive air purifiers. Authorities have tried to ease the controversy by promising to measure small particles by 2015 and opening one of their monitoring centres to the public. They have also questioned the credibility of the US air monitor.

  8. I’m not much of a one for these organized televised sporting events which seem to be all the rage in some quarters, but apparently there’s a big American football thingee coming up, and the Denver Broncos have this quarterback people seem to like named Tim Tebow, and he’s an outspoken Christian. Now this very left-wing seeming rabbi (I can’t believe he’s a rabbi) has written a piece on how he thinks Christians will riot and maybe burn mosques and beat up gay people if the Broncos win. Or lose. Maybe either/or.
It’s an extraordinary little glimpse into the paranoid lefty mindset: Link. (Ace of Spades, so LANGUAGE WARNING.)

  9. Here is a petition that deserves a Canadian edition:
National Right to Work Act Petition to:
    My U.S. Senators and Congressman
    Whereas: Federal law permits Big Labor to confiscate $8 billion from American workers’ paychecks every year just to get or keep a job;
Whereas: This forced unionism breeds violent strikes and a hate-the-boss mentality which drive good jobs overseas, jack up prices and risk re-igniting inflation:
    Whereas: Union bosses use this forced-dues fortune to corrupt our political system with over a billion dollars every election cycle;
    Whereas: Union-puppet politicians routinely vote for higher taxes, bailouts, job-killing bureaucracy and even more porkbarrel spending keeping our nation locked in recession;
Therefore: I urge you in the strongest possible terms to strike a blow for freedom and American prosperity by co-sponsoring and casting your every vote in favor the National Right to Work Act.

  10. Well, I made it just under 2 minutes before I had to turn it off. Mercer is not funny. Never was.
I knew an old Norwegian trapper, who lived northwest of Grande Prairie. He and his dad moved there in 1916, a year before the big Norwegian migration to the Peace Country. He was 12 years old at the time. He had some stories that made my hair stand on end, and I suspect some of them were even true. One story was, his dad would tie a rope around his ankle, and he’d crawl into a black bear den with a .22, shoot the bear, then they’d drag it out with the rope. He lived to be almost 90, and trapped almost right til the end of his life. That’s what I call beating the odds.

  11. Soccermom – I just sent this to the good folks at Mars Canada. It’ll be interesting to see what response I get.
    Dear Sirs: Dec. 13/11
I’ve just learned that Mars Canada has withdrawn advertising from SUN News Network; supposedly because of e-mails from some disaffected Liberals [who believe that Canadians should only be allowed to hear left-wing interpretations of today’s issues and want SUN starved off the airways].
You need to know that my wife and I have used Uncle Ben’s brand exclusively for as long as it’s been on the market [30 years?]. Only today I drove to three different friggin’ grocery stores to find Tomato/Basil because everywhere was sold out. And then I turn on the computer and learn that the makers of Uncle Ben’s are helping to shut down the first center-right voice heard in Canadian news in my lifetime.
    What’s going on?
You’d better have another reason besides whining leftists for pulling support from SUN. It is my understanding that SUN is out-drawing both the CBC News and CTV News channels in virtually every time slot. I’d like an explanation before I go grocery shopping again. I’m sure there must be an alternative voice in rice as well, don’t you think?

  12. This discussion between Paula Simons and Licia Corbella illustrates, in my opinion, the great deficiency of the Leftist mind (Simons’). With rampant proof in front of her, from throughout Western Europe, of what happens when you dismiss the need for your own culture and let other cultures replace it, even then she can’t see the forest from the trees.
Corbella is absolutely right in asserting that if the Niqabs are allowed to persist in Canada then block after block after block in some neighbourhoods will eventually be ghettoized into something much more familiar in Saudi Arabia. And when that happens, will Simons be admitting she was wrong and fight vehemently to change it back? Doesn’t matter, because it’ll be much too late.

  13. Ah, cmon folks. As a prospector and field geologist I spent a few years in the sainted boreal forest outsmarting and being outsmarted by bears. I’m not a fan of Mercer but, I found this piece clever and funny as hell. Give the devil his due.

  14. Mars, UncleBens ‘rice’. I don’t eat that processed crap that’s passed off as food. I couldn’t care less who they advertise with, it’s all BS food propaganda.

  15. Off topic, but I too have contacted Mars Inc. in the hope that they will either deny withdrawing advertising or the understanding that ‘boycotting’ works both ways

  16. Mercers’ closing line from his rant last week on the topic of the banning of soccer balls at a school, “once you give up your balls your freedom is sure to follow”. Almost had beer up the nose on hearing that one.

  17. Although I think Mercer is way past his “Best Before” date, this video was actually interesting and entertaining.

“BRISBANE: Australia on Wednesday awarded land to an Indian and a Canadian firm to build a massive US$10 billion coal export port amid forecasts of a long-term boom for energy demand.
Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh said India’s Adani and Canadian Brookfield Infrastructure Group had each been awarded 190 hectares (469 acres) at northern Dudgeon Point to develop two new coal terminals.
“The proposed two terminals will provide export capacity up to 180 million tonnes per year, that’s 50 million tonnes more than the current capacity at the (nearby) Port of Hay Point,” said Bligh.”

It’s the clearest sign yet of Beijing’s waning faith in bonds issued by Europe and the United States. Europe’s festering debt debacle, record low yields on US Treasuries and a depreciating dollar all add weight to the view in China that the time is ripe to change investment tack.

  22. If this is how the EPA does science then shutting them down is long overdue:
Tainted EPA Report on Fracking Blasted by Gas Co.
“Environmental Protection Agency Strikes Gas! That should have been the headline last week that instead ran as “EPA says fracking may be polluting groundwater.” Here’s the story: the EPA says tests it conducted in Pavillion, Wyoming “indicate that ground water in the aquifer contains compounds likely associated with gas production practices, including hydraulic fracturing.” However, it turns out that the EPA drilled two monitoring wells to some 900 feet – much deeper than water wells which are usually at about 300 feet – and indeed found hydrocarbons. In short, they drilled into the natural gas reservoir that has long attracted industry producers.
    […]
Encana, the company that is actually producing natural gas through fracking in the Wyoming region under study, has just issued a rebuttal to the EPA’s lengthy report, spotlighting several inaccuracies and mistakes. In addition to noting that the EPA had in effect discovered natural gas by drilling into a natural gas reservoir, the company faulted the EPA’s “discovery” of various several man-made chemicals in the deep wells. Curiously, the agency found the same chemicals in the so-called “blank” water samples— the “ultra purified water commonly used in testing to ensure no contamination from field sampling procedures.” As Encana points out, the conclusion suggests “problems associated with EPA methodology”. No kidding.”

  29. Mamba
I’ve been asking for weeks, especially at the globe wrt social issues: “What would Tebow do?”.
For some reasons the Progressives don’t like it.
Seriously though, it’s simply fascinating the amount of ire that TT is generating from seculars and Progressives for doing what’s been done by thousands before. A simple prayer on the sideline when he’s not on the field.
I never cheer for the Broncos, but hell, I hope he wins the Super Bowl simple to stick it in the eye of the Progressives.
That said, it ain’t gonna happen, and the Tebow train will come to a halt this weekend, as Tebow faces Jesus’ real favorite person, Tom “Terrific” Brady.

  30. Furthermore… regarding religion and football…
I was wondering “tongue’n cheek” that if in fact Jesus was here today, could he play QB in the NFL? Seriously! If JC is perfect, then can he dunk a basketball? Does the perfectness translate into physical perfection; or, is it just the perfection of the soul? Just curious.

you might not know this, but at last year’s Super Bowl TT was featured in a Half-time commercial(he was a college player at that time) about his mother, and her not having an abortion. Not to worry…Big Daddy Rae steps in to stop the family quarrel:
Now Rae, whose frenemy relationship with Michael Ignatieff is well-storied, seemed less than impressed by the public infighting.
Rae curtly responded Wednesday morning to a Twitter user who mentioned, “Young Liberals attacking each other in the press.”
“What bullshit is this?” Rae tweeted at Adam Goldenberg, perhaps hoping to gain some of that Pat Martin street-tweet cred.
