Unimpressed with the CBC’s explanations regarding its financial accountability and handling of access to information requests, Conservatives indicated Thursday they may look at amending a law that exempts the broadcaster from disclosing certain information — potentially even things like news anchor Peter Mansbridge’s salary…”

  2. I’ve noticed in a number of threads that people have identified their physical locations. For example ‘Abe Froeman’, ‘Fred’ and myself are all from Vancouver Island.
Having been a lurker/poster for some years, I’d be fascinated to know where many of the familiar names are posting from.
Perhaps Kate (Delisle, Sask.) or Robert W. (Vancouver) would entertain having a ‘geography’ thread where we could each simply say the city, town or municipality from which each of us posts.
I think it would be very interesting to see the ‘coverage’ that SDA represents/
    Let me start it off.

  3. I guess the song Family Tradition is true about political stance as well, except Hank Sr. made his comments under a pseudonym.

Wall Street Journal live blogging a press conference with the ex-CEO of Olympus….
“Olympus Corp.’s ousted Chief Executive Michael Woodford returned to Japan for the first time this week since his questions about dubious company acquisitions sparked a boardroom drama that has shaken the camera and endoscope maker to the core. Three veteran executives have resigned and investigative authorities in Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. have launched probes into the company’s shadowy accounting tactics stemming back to the 1990s.
Mr. Woodford met with Japanese prosecutors, police and regulators Thursday. In the latest development, the three senior executives at the center of the scandal resigned from the board the evening before Mr. Woodford was to confront them…”

  6. Hank Williams sure told Uncle Joe off in that song. Too bad Hank was not aware of the 5th column Joe planted here in our educational system and possibly about the useful idiots prepared to help Joe and still are helping Joe’s heirs.
Black Mamba, your tip @ 10:31 reminds me of some snippets in Mark Steyn’s new book “After America”.

  7. In “Presence of Malice: Against the Conservative Portrait of the President“, Vanderleun argues that the widely-held (among conservatives) view that Obama is merely lazy, incompetent, and shallow, is naive, and wrong.
    Two excerpts:
“Self-identified conservatives, it seems to me, are only too happy to ‘rule out malice’ when it comes to examining the actions of this oddest, most alien, and most unconnected to the American earth of presidents. I believe this is because it is both comfortable and gratifying for conservatives to do so. Conservatives love to think of themselves as being not only reasonable and right, but polite as well. Progressives are only too glad to help them smother in this self-nullifying delusion.”
“…the recent abuses of power and usurpation of governing traditions must now be seen as a ‘long train.’ Surely in the last two years we have seen many such abuses and usurpations from the appointment of czars and the subsequent stacking of the employee decks at all government departments, the endless acts of stealth reparations, the budgeting and legislation that continually increases indebtedness and hence the bonded servitude of present and future generations of productive citizens, the twisted department of selective justice that is wholly devoted to the protection and enhancement of the rights of the ‘government-driven classes’ at the expense of a color-blind enforcement of the law. All of these, and many others, can be seen to pursue ‘invariably the same Object;’ the wholesale destruction of the United States to such a degree that a few more years of the same will make a recovery exceedingly difficult even as it it opens the country to further attacks from within and without. Taken all in all, it amounts to something that, arising not from an ‘administration’ but from the ego of one man, ‘evinces a design.'”

  8. Fjordman’s “Islamophile Ilusions”:
“I have challenged Marie Simonsen, commentator in Dagbladet, to provide some concrete examples of places where Muslims have lived peacefully with their non-Muslim neighbors over longer periods of time. Personally, I don’t think any such place exists, which means that the term Islamophobia, so frequently used by her newspaper and others, is completely meaningless…”

Musta been a pretty slow century then…
Email 4443: “Basic problem is that all models are wrong – not got enough middle and low level clouds.”
This is a discussion that referred to climate models of the late 1990s vintage. These issues were well-known and they have improved in more recent modelling. This related to model differences in development of a multi-model average for the future. The work was not published in the peer-reviewed literature.

  10. Thanks for the excellent song EBD, it would be lovely to think that it could relate to today but it is sad that things are more as Ken (Kulak) has reminded us – we have ‘Joe the butcher’s’ pals teaching our children.
Your link to the American Digest is fabulous – it makes me feel ill, but forewarned is forearmed. Sarah Palin told America about the ‘present’ President before he was elected; the MSM and the establishment Republicans were too busy ‘pleasing’ the pseudo-intellectuals to think beyond their navels and they all piled on this very intelligent (not ‘smart’ or ‘slick’, I said intelligent) lady, and attempted to marginalize her because they were too stupid to call a commie a Commie and a hater a hater. Everyone with fortitude and a love for liberty should force him/her self to read your link, EBD. Many thanks.

“Help us find clues in climate email hacker’s message
A README.txt file left by ‘FOIA’ with the hacked emails that were dumped online this week contains tantalising clues
    • Post your thoughts in the comments below or email readmeanalysis@gmail.com
“What does this file really tell us, if anything, about the identity of the hacker? I have annotated all the places in the file which I think are of potential interest – and explained why. (Click on the yellow tabs on the file below to read the annotations.)
For example, there are the stylistic writing quirks. And what about the quotes at the beginning that help to underscore the “motivation” behind releasing the emails? Where do they come from? The motivation is obvious enough, but do these clues help to paint a profile – nationality, cultural heritage, competence with computers etc – of the perpetrator?
I’ve had a go below but I’m really like to draw on your collective wisdom, so please use the comments below to offer your own thoughts, speculations and theories about what this file might tell us about the hacker’s profile (and the police who are sure to be also scrutinising it for potential clues). If you’d prefer to, you can email me on readmeanalysis@gmail.com.
(NB: Hopefully, the specific topic of this blog should be clear to all. Any comments about what does or doesn’t cause climate change etc, are likely to be treated as off-topic by the moderators. Many thanks in advance. Happy sleuthing.)”

Just how miserable a failure this is can hardly be overstated. America’s debt has passed $15-trillion. Governments owe almost $50,000 for every man, woman, and child. Everyone knows the problem won’t solve itself and is getting worse by the hour.”

  15. maz2 – that per capita debt figure is wildly misleading – there are only 100 million or so US taxpayers, so debt per taxpayer is north of $150k for starters. Since there is also a deficit of approximately $ 15k per taxpayer, you can see that the US is Greece, NOW; you don’t have to wait 10, 5, or even one year, the US is insolvent, now. Each taxpayer would have to cough up at least $15k more per year ( tax rates must double) just to stop adding to the debt, and to start liquidating the debt would require a minimum of around $4k per taxpayer, in addition. Taxing the nation more won’t help, as Congress has designed the entitlements to grow at high rates, and Obamacare will not fully impact the budget until 2014.
The only way out is to cut spending to balance the budget.

  17. Special: Photo of fallen hero’s dog
Who is to say how the spirit moves and what brings grace, comfort and solace to the families of the fallen? Dogs are special, as I can well attest, and they form a bond with their families which often stretches beyond the bounds of “normal.” Is Justin’s spirit here with this dog, Hero, giving comfort to his parents in their grief?
I’m not going to argue against it.

“U.S. stocks tumbled in the worst Thanksgiving-week loss for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index since 1932 as concern grew that Europe’s debt crisis will spread and American policy makers failed to reach agreement on reducing the federal budget.”
“The S&P 500 slid 4.7 percent to 1,158.67, closing at the lowest level since Oct. 7. The Dow fell 564.38 points, or 4.8 percent, to 11,231.78 this week.
“We’ve resumed focus on the European debt issues,” Terry L. Morris, senior equity manager at Wyomissing, Pennsylvania- based National Penn Investors Trust Co., said in a telephone interview. His firm manages about $2.2 billion. “The situation in Europe doesn’t seem to be improving, which makes the market defensive,” he said. “Spending cuts kicking in in the U.S. will be a negative too because it will be a drag on economic growth.””

“Revealed: How Climategate scientists DID collude with government officials to hide research that didn’t fit their apocalyptic global warming claims
5,000 leaked emails reveal scientists deleted evidence that cast doubt on claims climate change was man-made
Experts were under orders from US and UK officials to come up with a ‘strong message’
Critics claim: ‘The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering’
Scientist asks, ‘What if they find that climate change is a natural fluctuation? They’ll kill us all’
More than 5,000 documents have been leaked online purporting to be the correspondence of climate scientists at the University of East Anglia who were previously accused of ‘massaging’ evidence of man-made climate change.
Following on from the original ‘climategate’ emails of 2009, the new package appears to show systematic suppression of evidence, and even publication of reports that scientists knew to to be based on flawed approaches.
And not only do the emails paint a picture of scientists manipulating data, government employees at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are also implicated.
One message appeared to show a member of Defra staff telling colleagues working on climate science to give the government a ‘strong message’.
The emails paint a clear picture of scientists selectively using data, and colluding with politicians to misuse scientific information.”
