  1. The left would rather raise taxes to pay for billion dollar gun registries and send millions of dollars to Haiti & Africa, much of which disappears in its course.
The Liberal progressive movement has been active committing genocide against aboriginal Canadians through welfare and subsequent drug dependency, along with the mass importation of third world multiculturalism to insure the destruction of these people.

  2. In the immediate situation, the Federal government needs to step in right away and provide some sort of relief.
Longer term, I just don’t see how a system of self-perpetuated apartheid on the margins of mainstream society can ever work to the benefit of First Nations peoples.*
Well, at least not without a casino and good lines of communication to the outside world.

Nonsense, the early settlers lived in worse conditions, and survived.

True, but the problem lays in the liberalized welfare drug and crime situation that finds itself on city streets, mostly in gang form. Then it’s not an Indian problem but our problem. The poor government dependant reserves are hatcheries for gangs that are fuelled by liberal handouts, not allot differently than American inner city ghettos for the blacks.
This reserve/ entitlement situation will solve itself in time with the massive third world immigration that will absolutely not honour age old “white man’s” treaties once they collectively gain control of parliament while representing independent cultural communities.
You see it happening already today with ethnic MP’s fighting for the entitlement rights of grandparents coming from India for example. Take a look at any of these third world countries today and see how they treat their own people, especially any ethnic aboriginals.
The progressive left has insured the cultural destruction of native aboriginals along with our own through these means. It’s all just a matter of time.

The have $100,000 annually for a family of 4 to provide municipal services. Give me an effing break.

  6. The problem with Attawaspiskat is that it is was an attempt to form a town where no town existed. The people were nomads who fished in the summer and trapped in the winter. Attawaspikat was where they camped on a temporary basis. Then a plywood village was shipped in there in the late sixties and early seventies and with plenty of government aid, the population increased. But political correctness has eliminated the revenue from trapping, and nobody wants to eat fish every day. There is zero chance of growing anything to eat, so everything is shipped in, generally by air. So groceries cost four or five times what they would closer to civilization, as does everything else, including the plywood shacks which have fallen apart after forty years of sub-arctic weather. Only continued subsidization will allow these people to stay there.
The most obvious solution would be to move them all the hell out of there to someplace where they could do something useful to society as a whole. But that’s probably the most politically incorrect solution of all.

  7. I dunno, maybe the hypocrisy of not cleaning up our own backyard in regards to gov’t supplied handouts strikes a chord with the Indian. Medicare is a good example. Public education is another.

  8. I used to live in Timmins, and I would go up to Fort Albany, Kashetchewan, Attawapiskat and Peawanuk to take school pictures and family photos, so I’d spend a couple of days in each town. This was before the diamond mines opened, so the only wealth that went up there was from transfer payments. Every few years, all the houses would have to be rebuilt, but there was no sense of ownership, because everything was simply rationed out, and the new buildings were pulled apart almost as quickly as they were built.
I used to marvel at the poverty. Maintaining these communities is like maintaining a colony on the moon. Everything has to be flown in, and maintaining a household at the poverty level in an 1100 square foot home in Attawapiskat takes about as much money as maintaining a nice little place of 2800 square feet in Rosedale.
And the folks there are unhappy. They see the wealth down south and wonder why they don’t have it. Every possible attempt is made to extract it from outsiders and visitors. At one point, I had to hire a boat to take the 50 yard trip across the river from Fort Albany to Kashetchewan. It cost me $40, (at the time I was making the princely sum of $22000 a year as a photographer).
There is a real atmosphere of indignation in these communities: they feel cheated, and yet the money flowing into these communities is simply staggering. Every day, buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken are flown in along with the other staples. Twice a year, each family is given an allowance and then flown into Timmins for a week to stock up on household goods, (which have to be flown back).
Everyone lived a lifestyle of comparative poverty when compared to the rest of Canada, and yet it cost as much as it would to live like a prince in Toronto, so there was simply no conception of the relative value of things.
And I believe the Cree people in these communities are being ripped off and put upon; they are gentle, mind-boggingly patient, and far from pushy. The trouble is, they’re frustrated with the wrong people. They think their troubles originate with the government in Ottawa, and no one questions the lack of transparency of their own leadership.
It’s curious that these communities are even there in the first place. They grew up around trading posts built by the Hudson Bay Company in the failed experiment of the north-west passage, but by now most of the locals consider themselves indigenous, and are attached to the land – even if it makes them the inheritors of the dreariest landscape outside of the Gobi desert.
I had hoped that the diamond mines would bring real wealth to the Cree, but it looks like that hasn’t worked out.
There are no easy answers to the problems facing native communities in the north, but considering the rate of growth in the population, (a town of 1400 would have 400 children enrolled in elementary school), it’s a really bad idea to simply throw money at the problem and hope it will go away.

Exactly, though not just with the Indian, but allot of other people as well. I’m not advocating more welfare to be sure, but we need to get our heads out of these third world shitholes and start focusing on our own backyard as you pointed out.
For starters we need to tell the First Nations that they are either in or out of Canada, they’ve had enough time to decide. Out means self government, zero help, and defined borders. In means no entitlements and Indian peoples are treated with the same societal structure as everyone else.
Canada does not belong to the Indian, they lost the war and came out in pretty good standing with allot of private and crown land to use at their disposal. Canada the nation was founded by our European ancestors, it does not belong to anyone outside of the society that was created and inherited, save for those that contribute and are invited in. We aren’t inviting in contributors anymore.

  10. What is it with Akin that he has lefty guests but doesn’t challenge them. He really is a misfit on Sun News – too long in the Parliamentary Press Gallery maybe?

  11. Make a standing offer to very status Indian who finishes High School: a one time $250,000 lump sum, tax-free payment on the condition that they forfeit their status forever.
    Just ecome another contributing Canadian.

  12. Sorry, lots of Big Trucks in the drive ways. I am suspicious. This not the first time for this place, I believe.
Also, what conditions did these folk live in duuring the 18th or 19th C?

  13. David Akin is the scrap thrown to the left-lib dogs. They snarl anyway.
So, SunTV, why bother? Akin doesn’t fit, and he’s extremely annoying.

  14. The best thing Harper could do for the Indians is tear up the treaties, stop the money flow, end the entitlements, and make the Indians Canadian citizens, no more and no less than any other Canadian citizen.

  15. They get 17 Million dollars a year for sewage and water…..yet have none…it must be self govenment….follow the money.. then you will know why…this is bullshit of highest order..

  16. It’s actually closer to $25 million….pretty soon we’re talking real money.
Yes, there’s something crooked on that reserve, most reserves for that matter.
Our native brothers prove again and again, they are just as corrupt as anybody else

  17. Many years ago, flew into a native community en route to my summer job across the river. Small commnunity; maybe a dozen homes. What got to me was that only one home – that of the schoolteacher – had running water and – if I remember correctly – any sort of sewage other than an outhouse. Was appalled then; am stil now.
That being said, I strongly believe various communities have to take responsibility for the delapidated state of their housing. It was delivered to them in good repair; it is up to the community to keep it in good repair.
I must admit, however, that it is easier to plug a relatively cheap big screen TV into the local currant bush than it is to insert a toilet into a non-existent sewage system.

  18. C’mon, Frances. Don’t you think with the kind of money flowing into every Native Reserve every year, they could afford a decent sewage system? Does the Canadian taxpayer have to pay for that too?
How much of that money goes into drugs, alcohol, Caribbean vacations, and the bank accounts of the so-called Native “leaders”?
It’s well-documented that if people get something for nothing, they don’t take care of, or responsibility for, said service, item, whatever. That “something for nothing,” however, always costs somebody, and in the case of Native Canadians, it’s the ROC who foots the bill.

  19. The only way to solve this problem would be to seize all children born to mothers on reserves (and sterilize those women who had FAS kids) and raise them in an environment where they could look forward to something more than sniffing gasoline in an unheated shack without indoor plumbing.
I’ve talked to Native Indians who credit residential schools with giving them the start they needed in life. There’s no congenital cognitive deficiency that this race has and they’re capable of the same achievements as the rest of us if they grow up under the right conditions.
All of the Indians should be given a choice: either go back to living in teepee’s and living off the land in a specified wilderness area or move into the 21’st century. Most of the Indians I see where I live seem to be doing quite well financially and are off the reserve. Hopefully PMSH will have the balls to terminate the Indian industry once and for all.

  20. Loki said: “The only way to solve this problem would be to seize all children born to mothers on reserves…”
That’s what my Grandparents said about the Irish. Its been done, it doesn’t work. “Stop sending welfare money” might work, or it might not, but at least it would be cheaper and the Indians wouldn’t be any worse off. If they want to watch their kids starve out in the bush because “Its Their Land!”, call me a racist, but I’d say that’d be their problem.
Because you know what? I had to move to get a job and support myself. Repeatedly. Hell, I had to leave the country of my birth and emigrate to America for a good long while.
I just can’t seem to work up a tear for the poor Natives if gee whiz, THEY might have to frickin’ move too. Grow up and grow a pair.
Free country means you are free to do what you need to do to look after yourself, it doesn’t mean free lunch.

  21. Phantom, if the children were the progeny of white mothers living in the same abominable conditions they would be seized by child welfare agencies. There’s a double standard at work here but I guess we shouldn’t interfere with the Native Indian culture which cherishes the production of FAS kids whose only ability seems to be to produce more FAS kids. IMO, we’ve fulfilled our treaty obligations and the next step should be to leave the Indians with title to their reserves and let them sell off or rent pieces to raise money.
