    I’m not one to complain but I got a reader tip on a story emerging out of the UofC caught in the spam filter and I have no idea why…could you give it a boo if you get a chance?

  4. Lest we forget indeed. The Chairman (person) and CEO of the Xerox Corporation, Ursula Burns, has scheduled a webcast tomorrow, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. ET. The discussion is around 3rd quarter results and a final 4th quarter direction.
    While it is a ‘global webcast’ it is hard to overlook the fact that there are a significant number of Xerox employees who live in the Eastern time zone. Not a classy move.

    A couple of weeks ago I was in Houston and I wore my poppy.
    Thinking that some Americans might not know about the tradition, I printed out a description of what it means to Canadians.
    Two people actually asked me, so I gave them the printout.
    Later, one of them said reading it (it included McCrea’s poem) almost made her cry.

The story is receiving massive coverage in North America because the iconic Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno, was also fired today.
    CA readers are aware of Spanier’s failure to ensure proper investigation of Climategate emails and his untrue puffs about the ineffective Penn State Inquiry Committee, reported at CA here and by the the Penn State Collegian as follows:
    Graham Spanier addressed the inquiry and the panel’s work during the Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 22. Penn State President Spanier is quoted as saying:
    “I know they’ve taken the time and spent hundreds of hours studying documents and interviewing people and looking at issues from all sides,” Spanier said.
    Spanier’s claims were totally untrue. Not only did the Inquiry Committee fail to “look at issues from all sides”, they didn’t even interview or take evidence from critics – as they were required to do under the applicable Penn State policy. As I reported at CA at the time:
    The only interviews mentioned in the report (aside from Mann) are with Gerry North and Donald Kennedy, editor of Science. [Since they are required to provide a transcript or summary of all interviews, I presume that the Inquiry did not carry out any other interviews.] What does Donald Kennedy know about the matter? These two hardly constitute “looking at issues from all sides”. [A CA reader observed below that “North [at a Rice University event] admitted that he had not read any of the EAU e-mails and did not even know that software files were included in the release.”] They didn’t even talk to Wegman. Contrary to Spanier’s claim, they did not make the slightest effort to talk to any critic or even neutral observer.”

  13. Time to remember. As a dad of a 2 year old my eyes well up at the 0:52 sec mark of the video. Today marks the saddest day of my year, my time to give thanks to all those in this country who helped my family in my homeland all those years ago.
    There was no need. It was a far off war in far off lands. But Canada cared. Canadians always do. I am forever grateful. My family is forever grateful.
    ‘Thank you’ seems an awful shallow response for the appreciation I feel so I hope you will understand how deeply I feel it. Canadians always do….

  14. My wife was relaxing in front of the TV last night, watching Entertainment Tonight, I guess it was in honour of Veterans Day that they ran a bit on Hollywood graveyards, showing the graves of many dead actors etc.
    Never forget… what filthy degraded scum and trash work in the entertainment corporations. Try not to spend money on their product, boycott their advertisers.

  16. I noticed all the footage on the local news from occupy Vancouver, police and firefighters wearing poppies. Not one to be seen on any of the occupiers.

  17. My grandfather marched off to war.
    Sleeping on trains,
    living on ocean tossed ships and then being unloaded into those dark rain/snow filled trenches,
    up to his knees in freezing water,
    dodging huge artillery shells, with poison gas.
    Trying to run through pissed on rusted barb wire death traps and firing a weapon that only had 5 rounds is
    a war terror I am glad I missed.
    In Vietnam we had complete air superiority,
    and didn’t have to dodge artillery shells.
    Unless you were at Khe Sanh..
    Compared to World War 1.
    Dying in those trenches,
    Nam was a fricking Paradise.

  18. I have my great-great Uncle Louis cufflinks. He wore them at 17 when he graduated, in 1914. A year later he was a military dispatch motorcycle rider and having just come back from home leave, he pulled over when he saw a unit of men from his town to say hello and pass on some letters.
    Two minutes later a stray German shell scored a direct hit on the little knot of young soldiers.
    None of his graduating class survived WWI. I understand the Combined class reunions 1914-1917 could be held in someone’s dining room with little crowding.

  23. I was watching the History Channel last night about the Canadian campaign to liberate the Schelt in Holland. A soldier talked about losing his best friend in a artilery attack on the barn they were sleeping in. He survived but his friend from D-Day on was killed. He told how the loss broke him and he had to be taken from the line.
    The story resonated with me as my mother had told me about her first cousin being killed in Holland the same way. He was serving with his best friend who also came from the same small town, Creston, BC. They were both in the same shed that was shelled. He survived my mother’s cousin did not. He returned to Creston and told her about what happened. Her cousin had been mentioned in dispatches as he had led a patrol out not a monthearlier to capture Germans for intelligence. They had come under heavy shelling but he survived to night patrols trying to accomplish their mission.
    I remember these men realizing that through their sacrifice I have never been called to seerve as they did. As much as I try to comprehend their sacrifice I realize I never truly will appreciate all they did.

  26. CT, I watched the first two episodes of that series, but had to give up on it.
    Far too many historical inaccuracies, misleading commentary in the voice overs and some out right historical revisions.
    Defenitely not worthy of the vets who took part.

    Canada gave my family refuge in the 1920s from the repressive Russian Soviet regime. That is why I have tried to serve this country, both militarily and in municipal service, for forty-eight years.
    But I am getting older and tired.
