We were thinking about going down to Bankers Hall this morning to mess with the hippies but we found out that the march from the base camp was starting at the crack of noon.
They should be getting there about now.
I walked across Churchill Square at about 1:30 pm on the way to the Farmers Market in City Hall (which, by the way, was a big disappointment) and there were only about 20 people there in the square. There was a moonbat wearing a mask shouting ‘Where are all the people? EVERYONE should be here’. Well, too bad, sonny, maybe nobody cares for your silliness. OTOH, there were about 20 people lined up at the hotdog stand on the north side of the square. I guess some people have their priorities straight. I wonder where the other 98.9999999% of the people were this afternoon. Shopping at Safeway?
BTW, I was disappointed to see that there were no hippies sleeping on the pavement in the square. I guess the bitterly cold wind scared them off.
I wonder how long Churchill Square’s name sake would have taken before he sent in the fire hoses to wash the grunge off the pavement.
I guess the astroturf growing season is shorter in Edmonton than Noo Yawk.
The metaphor that comes to mind is a couple of adults standing over a crib with a baby in it crying hysterically …. the caption is …
“What does he want”?
STAMPEEEEEEEDE!
Oh wait- that’s only in Calgary.
Which is more amusing- a rodeo with pancake breakfasts or smelly hippies mad at something?
Due to the recent leadership selection for the PC Party of Alberta the Left is visibly the establishment, for now.
The Alberta public sector unions don’t want to rock the boat because they selected the new Premier and there isn’t much in the way of private sector unions here.
Go ahead hippies, make my day by forcing the new Premier to be seen publically sucking up to you with an election soon in the offing.
LOL
Hippies out biting the hands that feed them.
I took in the gathering at Bankers Hall and it was as I expected, street theater and actually kind of boring. Every left wing complaint was on display. The most bothersome though was the father with his 3ish year old, complete with the died green hair, being carried around on the dad’s shoulder with a sign about how he wants a green future. Or the mom with her 8-10 year old daughters carrying around flags with three raised fists. I guess that’s the lefty/socialist symbol of resistance or something. Just seemed wrong.
I was at March For Life in Edmonton this year. Despite similar numbers the MSM didn’t bother with us much.
Boots
Thanks for the description…would you care to guess at the crowd size?
These gibbering idiots held up the proletariat chariot I was on for 7 minutes whole today whist they sauntered on by.
I am not pleased.
Sorry syncrodox I couldn’t. I biked down and just hung out at the west end of the demonstration and went no further. I didn’t mingle, I just couldn’t. But I thought I could see the end of the crowd at the east end and if that was so then a couple of hundred? And among that lots of curious bystanders.
I do not support these miscreants because they are ignorant. But so are you. The last pic asks who we are in debt to. Well I hear China holds some debt despite getting grants and free money from us, America and others. How can Democracies give aid to a nation that then turns around and lends them money? Also, we borrow from international bankers who invent the money out of thin air and then charge us interest on this fictious cash. Oh, there is something going on here that none of us understand. At least those ignorant protestors are making their disgruntledness public. The rest of us just sit back in our ignorance and do nothing while our society crumnbles.
Thanks again Boots…maybe the crack of noon was too early..
INP
Define us.
Whew, thank goodness this was not a REAL occupation.
I too went down to have a look at the Calgary occupation at Bankers Hall. Looked like about 200 occupiers and 400 observers looking in to see what it is all about. It is the worst place to hold an occupation since it is in the middle of a block that can be easily secured at both ends if needed, and then the occupiers themselves would be the occupied. And while the signs were visible, it was almost impossible to hear anything other than the three word chants that would occasionally emanate.
Around 3:30 they marched down to a sunnier and more open location at the Olympic Plaza and proudly unfurled their “Occupy” banner while the amused constabulary looked on.
‘Us’ is me and you and everyone who lives in a western democratic nation who has sat back and allowed our politicians to borrow endless amounts of money from people who want nothing less than to destroy ‘us’.
Anyone heard how Occupy Yellowknife is going? What with global warming an’ all it can’t be too cold! Occupy Igloolik might be a mid-season CBC series. Ya never know.
Interesting factoid of the day – Brookfield Properties owns both Zuccotti Park in NYC and Bankers Hall in Calgary.
It seems odd that the same company that let a group of whack jobs take over one property is the target of another group.
INP…oohh…that “us”…agreed.
foobert…the sun isn’t as warm this time of year but I’m sure the occupiers will eventually figure it out.
It’s “TO WHOM?”.
If someone told these characters that “occupation” is a synonym for “job” they’d still be running
Like Dennis Miller says… If you want to make the Occupy crowd disperse set up a job fare!
Jeff, your problem was that March for Life didn’t have a leftist angle. You should have had signs like: “Occupy the pro-life side!” 🙂
If you want to starve them hide their welfare check under their workboots…
Better to freeze them out, weather is turning colder.
If all these people are such braniacs, you would think they would schedule their occupations to start in May, when the weather is ok, and getting better. Instead, it starts in October?
Sylvanguy beat me to it, for I was going to comment on the inability to write a simple sign in correct English. I wager that someone there claims the debt is owed to the Jews. They never let that one pass.
The question: “The World’s in Debt to Who?” is a good one. For every debt there must be a credit. If I have a $1000 liability to someone then someone must have a $1000 asset.
For the Japanese, who have a national debt of 180% of GDP the answer to the question is: they owe it to themselves. For the Europeans the answer is (Greece notwithstanding): they owe it to themselves. They have promised themselves that they will pay a very generous pensions to themselves but they cannot afford to. On net this is a wash – the asset is worth nothing, but neither is the liability.
What the sovereign debt crisis amounts to is democratic governments lying to its people by making promises it cannot keep. But in a democracy people get the government they deserve so here we are.

Sauntered into downtown Nanaimo to see the show – not many protestors – just the usual suspects. My friend (who is not remotely political unlike myself) wondered how many of them were still living at home and if the “old” hippies in attendance had bought new clothes since 1965. Got bored after 5 min of listening to the usual incomprehensible rhetoric. Decided to be good capitalists and go shopping.
Hmmm … not to many unemployable people in Edmonton.
Jeh Custerra who speaks for the Occupy Saskatoon crew and who wants everyone’s voice heard is the same guy who had to be thrown out of McNally Robinson during Ezra Levant’s Ethical Oil book signing. He took a bullhorn out after that and blathered away outside until the cops finally showed up.
He was very critical of Ezra’s book, though he admitted to me he hadn’t read it.

annie,
Was it a racist crowd? How many Chinese, blacks, and East Indians were in attendance?
Saw two young fellas outside Lloydminster City Hall today, with signs and lawnchairs. They were blown away by vehicles whizzing by…..
Here in Cambridge the Occupy Cambridge movement brought out 3 protestors. Even the loon organizing it can’t put a happy face on the utter failure of people to care:

”It’s a pity that so many people who support our cause didn’t make it out. I guess something came up and they were unable to make it”
The World’s in Debt to Who?
Ty sylvanguy…exactly why I sent it with regards the to the Alberta Teacher’s Union.
The World is in debt to whom?
No wonder they don’t have jobs.
Pardon…Teachers’
The Occupy Protesters should kiss J. D. Rockerfellers A*s. Thanks to J.D. he saved the whales, he did more to save the whales than all of the eco-fascists in the world combined. He did this by innovation and investing his capital in his oil refineries to the extent that he was able to lower the cost of coal oil/kerosene so low that it was no longer viable to hunt and kill whales for their oil for peoples lamps. Whales up until this Great Old Capitalist and Industrial Baron innovated and invested his capital, whales were slaughtered in the thousands year in year out. He should be given his due for this great effort of American ingenuity and capitalism. God Bless old J.D. Rockerfeller, your my hero….

“Was it a racist crowd?”
Of course it was.
They want non-white people dependant on state welfare and to be considered mentally undeveloped by implementing affirmative action programs. They are anarchists who support tax funded abortions knowing full well that overwhelmingly the aborted babies are black. They support further crisis in Third World countries by extended global welfare creating dependency, massive impoverished non productive population growth, and support for genocidal warlords.
Don’t be too hard on the ATA. There is only so much larnen you can put in a B ed. I mean if edjacashun were easy everyone wood be doin it. Rite?
Stan, I was there and got my book signed by Ezra and heard the moron in the leather jacket. I told my wife, oh, oh, there is a wannabe Chekist.
Thanks to LC Bennett for picking this up and posting it a few threads back, but Conrad Black has a great article on the “Occupiers”.
Conrad says “As for the Wall Street protesters, their largely justified complaints can’t be addressed by the wild methods they suggest.”

I think we are all opposed to crony capitalism, but communism is not the cure.
The poor Occupy Wpg crowd had to compete with the Slutwalk,so NOT a great turnout here.A few loons sporting CWB hats, some pink hair, and lots of piercings. And they wonder why no one will hire them?
Knight 99,
Maybe I was a little obtuse. If I had a sign that said “free fusion pineapple deep-fried chicken balls”, how many people would take me up on it?
One unfortunate young soul, with a homemade sign and wearing a way-too-small beret, got on the subway at Churchill station to make his way home from the big event. I was on the same car, because of course this was the same time as the crowds were trying to get to Commonwealth stadium for the Eskimo-Winnipeg game.
One of the bemused football fans on the train tried to engage the young hero, not being mean or anything, just curious about how it went and how many people showed up, etc. He was barely communicative in response. Not clear if he was shell-shocked, frightened, or despondent about the day’s events.
At any rate, he was too pitiful to make sport of.
The same regulars that attend all the free diners at Church street in Norwood.
Like Annie, I was curious enough about the Nanaimo event to go on down. Nanaimo has very deep coal miners union, blue collar roots so I wasn’t surprised to see roughly 300 people attending.
Also not surprised to see how incoherent, disorganized and frankly, disheveled the crowed was either. Signs included a 40 something guy with “This isn’t the future I was promised” – to which I inquired, what were you promised and by whom?
Another young woman’s sign complained about her debt and when I asked about it, I was told that she owed $50K for a BA in English and a BA in Community Education – whatever that is. She also said she was studing to be a teacher, but was told by the Ontario Teachers Federation that it probably wasn’t the right career for her. When I asked why, she unabashedly stated that they thought she was too radical.
But I should still help pay her tuition.
One last note: One of the very first speakers to grab the bull horn and address the crowd was a high school teacher, well known as a local political activist. But hey, I’m sure he doesn’t take his political beliefs into the public classroom and would never think of indoctrinating his students – subtly or otherwise.
One might ask who is in debt … governments. And why? ….because they borrowed too much money to feed your barking mouths.
The city centres were occupied but the occupiers themselves were vacant.
Good one, nv53. Succinct and exactly on target.
