  6. LBJ was still going to be the nominee till he was wounded significantly in an early primary in New Hampshire. He was defeated by Euene McCarthy and then RFK entered the race.
    The analogy is that Obama would need to face a significant but unserious candidate would exceeds expectations, that creates the room to bring Hillary in.
    If you see a sacrificial lamb like Kucinich run then Obama may follow LBJ. But it is getting late in the day and in Dem circles the one is left to his own devices.
    Barring a miracle Obama ha taken too many hits and the electorate is already makin their decision. Of course the GOP can always screw it up by putting forward an irresponsible nominee and running a bad campaign. The GOP field is narrowing to candidates who would have realistic shots in any election cycle.
    The best path to the presidency is always through being a governor.

  7. Yes, she’s turned, but she clings to the fantasy that the dastardly Republicans undermined him by refusing to play nice (“blocked at every turn by Republicans determined to slice him up at any cost”). Pathetic, really.

  8. You know things are heading down the dumper when you lose the Dowd vote.
    Obama can do his ‘chicken in every pot’ speech all he wants. Fact of the matter is, the Democrats have poisoned the business environment so badly that there is zero trust out there. Business will continue to sit on their estimated 1.5 trillion in cash and count off the next 14 months. Whoever succeeds Obama has their work cut out for them.

    Now that’s depressing!…Man, there is still a lot a morons that still think money grows on trees or in this lefty case in point, money growing out of rich white capitalist pockets.
    Many are sick of Obama because he does not stand up again’st the evil Republicans/TEA party…In other words, it’s not Barry’s fault he is such an abject POTUS failure. They are simply repeating Zero’s immature whining that he can’t act like a dictator king.
    These are citizens of the United States?
    Burn the New York Times and spread salt on the grounds where it stood.
    Barry Soetoro is absolutely finished and will have a hard time remaining at his er, “job” until January 2013 IMO.
    Thursday’s speech TV rating will be in the toilet.

    There are these opinion polls. The polls, will support just about any which way the wind blows. They call them “scientific”, after all those that conduct them went to school for a long time.
    How is it then, that you can come up with polls that contradict one another?
    The “journalist” says that most American still like the current president.
    How many are most?

    Who is the Black Democrat that could take his place as a candidate?
    After decrying every any criticism of Obama a racist since the beginning, to get him to step down now and let some White candidate, even Hillary Clinton, run in his place would alienate the 90+% of Black Americans who still support Obama from the Democrat party for generations.
    This racial tiger thing that the Dems have been riding instead of any real ideas is not a ride they can dismount from at any time of their choosing.
    It would be a repudiation of the sentiment that they all embraced when voting for Obama-the-empty-suit in 2008.

  15. Reading the comments, I’m not surprised that his supporters are now saying that no one could have done any better than Obama had they been nominated and elected in his place. Unprovable but irrelevant. What did Harry Truman say?

  17. What was LBJ’s famous comment? “When you’ve lost Walter Cronkite, you’ve lost America”?
    Symbolically, I’d say this is not quite at that level – Dowd is nowhere near as popular as Walt – but it’s close. I don’t disagree with earlier comments that Dowd’s a one-trick pony at best, but she is a sounding board for a particular class that Obama needs for support, and more importantly, money. I think he got that bus because his team realized that like Newt, he won’t be able to afford a plane.

    The media sold the idea of Obama having a silver tongue, but IMO most people who voted for him did so “to be a part of history” (i.e., voting for first black president) rather than because they were moved by his speeches. I think that was just one more hyped-up claim the press used to pad Obama’s very lean resume.
    I personally find his speeches incredibly annoying and insipid. I especially dislike that tennis-match, back and forth, head bobbing, arrogant chin thrust up and out, looking down his nose thing he does. Take away the teleprompter, and Obama is even more inarticulate than Bush and is incapable of conveying even a smidgen of Bush’s humanity and humility.
    The bloom is most definitely off the rose if Maureen Dowd is noticing and commenting on it in a public forum.
