OMMAG and jema – the problem is that Britain did not enter World War I to save France. The British considered it essential for their maritime interests (which were paramount) that no great power should control the North Sea coast. They were not prepared to let Germany conquer Belgium (or the Netherlands, although in the event the Germans did not attack them). If the Germans had attacked France without compromising Belgium, there’s no reason to think Britain would have entered the war, and we would have a had a very different 20th century. But, no such luck.
As to whether the British should have stayed out anyway – well, the Belgian coast proved itself enormously valuable to the Germans in WWII, and it would have much more so thirty years earlier, when the German fleet was specifically designed for short-range operations in the North Sea. You can understand the British reluctance not to just let the Germans take it, and thus upgrade their navy from a nuisance to a serious threat at a single stroke.
