Toronto’s CN Tower will give Jack Layton a glowing orange tribute on Saturday night.
The iconic building will be lit in the colour symbolic of Layton and his NDP to commemorate the passing of the federal leader and former Toronto city councillor, officials said Wednesday.
An online campaign to light the tower in honour of Layton had been rallying people to make the request.
The Facebook group, Let’s Get the CN Tower orange on Saturday night to Remember Jack Layton, had more than 5,000 members by the time the decision was announced.

I stress that I don’t normally get involved in obscenely partisan memorial gestures. But these are exceptional circumstances.

    I do like your idea of a plaque over at Jack’s favorite hang out, Kate. I do not wish to donate, however.

  6. Just heard Niagara Falls is to be lit orange Sat night. This whole creepy thing is making me embarassed to be a Canadian. My greatest fear is that brain dead Ontarians will vote the NDP in – in Oct’s election – a “tribute to Jack.”

  14. Have nothing personal against the late Layton, though I did deplore his politics. But lighting up the CN Tower in the official colour of his political party’? If they lit it Tory blue to commemorate a conservative politician, can you imagine the hullabaloo from the Left?

I suspect that the Dipper cult are not so much mourning the passing of a leader as they are the imminent loss of their opposition status when the public sees this loonie party for what it is minus it’s charismatic leader.

  32. That’s precisely my question aswell, why are we not told what his ilness was? Surely there’s a Cancer foundation somewhere just BEGGING for the chance to put Jack’s name on their donation sheets? This doesn’t pass the smell test…
    Also, why is it that everyone on the left solely credits Jack for his win as official opposition? I don’t deny that Jack was a formidable opponent and worked hard for that win, but it’s bloody obvious that Harper split the left vote to allow the NDP to over-take the Liberals and thus assure the Majority win. (IMO anyways)

  34. According to the Gob Layton planned his funeral one month prior to his death and prior to his last press conference. Telling isn’t it, from my perspective Layton planned a funeral for his NDP party not exclusively for himself why?

  36. I understand there will be special words from Jack to be spoken by the Minister at the service, I am predicting it will mention that he made a choice of euthanasia rather than prolong his suffering, and that he wants it to be legalized in Canada as his dying wish.

    There is one big difference between Layton and Cheney: Layton, by his refusal to speak out against terrorists and murdering, mysoginist regimes, is directly responsible (as are all Caviar Communists) for the death and torture of innocent civilians.
    Cheney, on the other hand, did something about it.

It’s interesting that the clergyperson taking the funeral is Brent Hawkes, the activist, gay minister of the LGTB (Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, Bisexual) Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto. He, apparently, has some special message to deliver. That Jack was bisexual? That Olivia is . . .? That Jack died of . . .?” Who knows? From all the pictures prominently posted by the media lately, it appears that Jack and Olivia both lustily joined in the lewd, pornographic Gay Pride Parade every year. WHAT a circus! But that seems to be what the lefties crave.
    I’ll be avoiding the funeral coverage like the plague but it’s likely I’ll learn the special message one way or another. I’m not sure that anything is going to surprise me at this point.

  40. It’s really quite remarkable- the adulation of so many and I’d bet that if you asked all and each ‘what did Layton do’ – 95% would be unable to come up with a single thing. I mean that. I can’t, myself, think of anything…
    It shows how eager people are for ‘heroes’ in their lives. The notion of equality is a false notion; we don’t want everyone to be equal. We want inequality – we want deadbeats whom we can deride as ‘losers’…and we want heroes whom we can worship. The notion of equality is fundamentally psychologially untenable.
    Layton is now a folk hero, akin to Robin Hood. The fact that his ideology was about inequality (after all, if you take from the rich you have to have the rich already existent); that he was punishing the rich and the hardworking; romanticizing poverty and the poor – ignoring that dependency on the govt has become a basic economic mode rather than a safety net;..and defining the rich not as a result of hard work but as a result of entitlement (eg, akin to the 18th c landowner aristocrats who inherited rather than worked for their wealth)…
    All of this is ignored. The coalition, which was very much his doing, was profoundly undemocratic, this is ignored. Not one whisper is heard about this act. And yet it was one of the most serious attacks on our democracy in our history.
    And, he’s a folk hero. Most of the people who are being swept along have no clue about his ideology and can’t come up with a single accomplishment…it’s just the Robin Hood folk hero image…
    It’s very easy to be a folk hero when you are not in government; you can spout any and all ideas and plans and whatever romantic utopianism you want. Words are not actions – and actually putting those words into concrete, funded-by-the-taxpayer policies – is something that a leader of an opposition party never, ever, has to face…
    Was his death tragic? Yes. He had just won, for his party, the role of Official Opposition – something not feasible a few years ago. Whatever the reasons (Liberal implosion, Quebecers tired of the Bloc regardless of the lack of campaigning and seriousness of the NDP in Quebec)…it was a real result. So – it’s hard to watch someone having just achieved such a goal – disappear into an early death.
    But the adulation? And CBC and CTV? Whew.

  42. Further to your point, ET, regarding Layton’s absurd policies and ideas.
    When I first heard the news of Jack’s death, I genuinely felt grief for his family and friends. But another emotion I felt just as strongly was anger. I was really hoping that, with Jack as official opposition, he would finally be taken to task over his impossible campaign pledges, etc. But now
    I’ll never get the satisfaction…
    I suppose I’ll have to take solace in knowing that the NDP is starting to fade into relative obscurity once again.

  48. Having witnessed such phoney grief from the media before I would doubt that most Canadians will be able to remember if Jack wore a mustache or not by the end of next week. Jack and his type, there are many, are like the foam on an ocean wave. There is no substance there but they sure add to the impression of shock and awe.

    I think I’ve got it figured out, Louise.
    It starts in early childhood with their mommies changing their wet sheets in the middle of the night and telling them it’s all right – while daddy yells that it isn’t.
    So the soft, useless UN is a surrogate mommy – a pacifier if you will – who will never, ever let anything harm baby.
    Freud had a name for it…some Greek weenie…
