  3. Just spent last 3 days in Swift Current Sask, got the last hotel room in the city on a Monday and Tuesday night. WTF?? Must be all those green jobs, couldn’t of been from all that drill pipe and steel from the patch eh? Hotter than hell but great peeps. Love their ways, humour and the attitude of gratitude they ooze. Farmers/operators with faces etched in character and eyes of kindness and trust. We got er’ done good. Love hanging with those good ol boys and gals. See yas in September, they will be working all day in the patch and harvesting the land at night and into the morning. There’s a reason the trains run on time around there.

    The level of holy @&#^ irony that takes is just mind boggling!

  7. The Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, senior pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church which, as the G&M says, “welcomes the LGBT community,” will be the officiant at Jack Layton’s funeral on Saturday.
    Dr. Hawkes “has ‘a couple’ of specific messages Mr. Layton asked him to deliver, which he is keeping to himself. ‘That needs to be part of what happens that day, and I think you will understand once you hear them,’ he said.”

    I suspect I know what those messages might be, heralded by Stephen Lewis’s eulogy and his daughter-in-law Lorraine Segato’s singing of the NDP anthem Rise Up. (Segato is married to Lewis’s daughter, Ilana.)
    This is beginning to look like one helluva State Funeral. Inclusiveness for nearly everyone.

  8. I have a request. U.S. lefties are telling me “taxes are the lowest they’ve ever been. Ever.” They mean for rich people and in general (I think). I’m not asking anyone to do my research for me, but can anyone suggest a good place to get nice shiney graphs and numbers to deal with what I suspect is a rather egregious misconception? C’mon, some of you are real good with numbers and such.
    Help me out and I’ll send Kate a tenner 🙂
    Honestly, this stuff is useful ammunition to have at our fingertips.

Stephen Harper has made a specialty of being the cooler heading many critical situations abroad. He goofed this time.”

    I agree with her, and I also wish the revoltingly maudlin pronouncements would stop. Yesterday I had the TV on in the background, and I heard someone say:
    “Canadians, coast to coast, are united in their grief…”
    You know, I had just stopped by for coffee at a Tim’s, and I didn’t really get that impression; people were just having a day.

  12. If they can make a jet engine that small, we should have turbine powered cars. I saw one in Winnipeg in 1962. (Chrysler.) What happened?

  13. Here’s why turbine powered cars are a bad idea. When a gas turbine engine is running it consumes fuel at a more-or-less steady rate. That is to say, when you’re cruising down the freeway or idling in stop-and-go traffic or sitting at a stop light, you’re consuming fuel at the same (high) rate. Plus there’s the jet-blast of the exhaust to consider. You’d be giving pedestrians hotfoots if they walked too close to your rear bumper. General Electric made a few turbine-powered locomotives back in the sixties. Very powerful — but they just sucked down too much fuel. And set several wooden bridges on fire from the hot jet blast. Gas turbines work best where you need lots of power for extended runs. Think helicopters, M1 Abrams tanks, fixed-wing aircraft, unlimited hydroplanes, and stationary power generation.

  14. I had the privilege of working side by side for a year with Joseph T. Holden, the inventor of the afterburner. I still have the designs we drew up together for a RC plane with four jet engines. Seeing this video makes me want to actually build the plane and see if it will work the way Joe said it would.

    At 2 p.m., RCMP pallbearers will carry the casket out the door to a waiting National Defence departure guard. A 15-gun salute will end the Ottawa portion of the memorial Thursday, followed by a round of O Canada on the Hill carillon. John Lennon’s Imagine will also be played.

  21. They held a wake for Mr. Jack in Redmonton last night. The Sun reported that hundreds showed up and CHED said it was 2000. Edmonton & surrounding area has a population of a million. This ratio of 1 in 500 means, according to the MSM, all of Canada is in mourning. I guess this is what they call “hope”.
    “Imagine” is perfect as it is a song I detest. Imagine no money. Yeah right John Lenin.

    In my thirty years of work in the science arena, as a government scientist, an industry consultant, and an academician, I have witnessed an increasingly adverse influence of progressivism on the practice of science. This influence has been especially visible in my specialty, environmental science (with a focus on air-pollution meteorology).
    From the start of the modern environmental movement with the publication of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson in 1962 followed by The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich in 1968, the science of the environment became overly contentious. Certainly, diversity of opinion and positions in the scientific community is desirable and largely advantageous to the advancement of the discipline. But, what quickly developed was a progressive environmentalism that elevated nature back to the Gaian status of the ancients and established one viewpoint as dogma. Soon, conformance to this one holy vision (as opposed to the usual ad nauseam progressive mantra to “celebrate diversity”) became the mandate. Anyone opposed the lofty goal imposed by progressive theology of protecting the Earth, at nearly any cost, was increasingly targeted in very unscientific ways with ad hominem attacks, public ridicule, eventual limitation of government funding, and even eco-terrorism.
    In addition, regardless of the extreme actions taken by progressives to defend their sacred environmental tenets, media outlets and the scientific community were rather tolerant.
    Climate-science practice is surely a good example of the current progressive-influenced “consensus” toward challengers of the humans-are-heating-the-planet. And, the “Climategate” tempest is a specific instance.”

    His death is terribly sad for his family, friends, and party but wall-to-wall coverage, ad nauseum, on our state broadcaster is extremely annoying and unseemly.
    ‘Funny how the media talks about “the nation’s grief” as they shove some people’s grief into everyone’s faces. They are manufacturing “the nation’s grief.” What an vulgar sales job. Camera angles were low, so that we couldn’t see how many fewer mourners there were at Parliament Hill than the CBC cheerleaders would have liked to see.
    C’mon, CBC, honour the man, don’t deify him.

    Nevada candidate’s Israel gaffe

    Nevadans were treated to a look inside the campaign of congressional candidate Kate Marshall on Wednesday when her staff sent out a press release that contained internal notes detailing why it would be “useful” for the Democrat to support Israel.
    Marshall, who is running in a special election for the seat in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, released a campaign statement supporting Israel as violence escalated in the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip. However, her aides accidentally left in a “background” section at the bottom that explained why it would be “useful to express support for Israel.”
    The section, which was first reported by the Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston, explains that putting out the statement would “demonstrate some foreign policy prowess” during a time when “Israel has been in the news.”
    The notes that were supposed to remain private also went on to say that a statement on Israel would be timely because of Glenn Beck’s recent Rally to Restore Courage event in Jerusalem. The section alludes to the fact that Republicans are generally supporters of Israel, noting that Marshall could gain by siding with Israel “in an R district.”
    “I am proud to consider Israel a friend and I reiterate my unwavering support for its fundamental right to exist and the absolute necessity for Israel to secure its people from outside threats. I stand ready and willing to assist Israel in defending itself against all acts of terrorism,” Marshall said in the press release.
    Marshall faces Republican Mark Amodei in a special election on Sept. 13.

  34. Ian Dip/Capstick, has just called Ezra Levant “disgusting” and “loathsome” on the Evan Soloman show: “it’s time that the Left strikes back.” (In his opinion, Christie Blatchford is also “disgusting” and both she and Barbara Kay are “provocateurs.”)
    Ha! The question was, was the state funeral for Jack Layton a good thing, seeing as it breaks protocol? Dipstick took the opportunity to breathe fire about SunTV and Ezra! Whoa! Big man! We’re scared.
    Evan Soloman must be listening to some of us, as he defended legitimate criticism of the NDP letter and whether or not a state funeral is justified. John Ivison voiced some discomfort with the letter from the grave, suggesting it wasn’t exactly appropriate and that had the shoe been on the CPC foot, there’d be lots of criticism from the Left.

    I’m sure Ezra will do a segment on it tomorrow. And I’m sure he will invite Capstick to come onto his show to give his thoughts. And yes, as with all the others, Capstick will, of course, decline that offer.
    When making reference to SNN, maybe Capstick can instead use that time to try and defend the CBC — which he loves to make such numerous appearances on — on the accusations of bias SNN makes against them… I guess he doesn’t want to in the face of such fact-based, bullet-proof criticisms.
    He’s a coward. What’s new?
    But I love the fact that he and Solomon are so aware of SNN… and you just know that both saw Levant’s “Save The CBC” special from a few days ago… warms my heart.

    I’m surprised the consensus media hasn’t asked for Aug 22 to be declared a new national holiday — Jack Layton Day. It’s coming, I’m sure.
    The coverage has been over the top; a cult-like following, much as how Layton’s NDP got elected in Quebec. As for the media’s claim that Layton’s popularity extended outside Quebec… 233 seats outside that province, 35 of which were already held by them… that leaves 198. The NDP now have 44 seats outside Quebec… a gain of just 9. That’s 9 of 198.
    It’ll be about another week that the MSM is really going to wear this, far enough from Layton’s death and funeral.

    This [justified criticism of the cult-like worship of Jack Layton] is what happens when you try to elevate a mere mortal — and a very flawed one, at that — to saintly or godlike status.
