A Rae of Sunlight for the Liberals?

Kelly McParland’s editorial on the return of Bob Rae to the Numero Uno position of a political party in Canada is most interesting.
Reading it, the following juxtaposition comes to mind:
Old Parlour Game: Describe what it means to be a Canadian without once mentioning America or American.
New Parlour Game: Describe what it means to be a Liberal in Canada without once mentioning Stephen Harper or the Conservatives.

  1. Bob Rae is a very intelligent (smart) guy.
Bob Rae is a silk stocking socialist.
Bob Rae, as years ago, Toronto Sun’s Barbara Amiel described him, a crypto-communist.
    And Stephen Harper should:
Drive a spike into the heart of socialism in Canada now, early in his majority mandate.
    1. Reinstate Conrad Black’s Canadian Citizenship.
    2. Gut or privatize the CBC.
    3.Neuter the HRC.
    4. Gut the Long Gun registry.
    5. End Party Subsidies.
    6. Revamp the Senate to eight year terms for all appointees, (if nothing else).
    7. Neuter the Unionized Civic Employees or enact “right to work” legislation or whatever is possible.
    8. Enshrine “property rights” into our current flawed “Constitution”.
    9. Not forget his own ‘REFORM” past, ……… or supporters.
Leave the “REFORM” of Preston Manning and former National Citizens Coalition leader, Stephen Harper’s influence forever on Canada!
And never ever forget, Jack Layton is also a “crypto-communist” !!!!!!

  2. I notice that Rae is listing three key areas for Liberal focus: aboriginal economics, health care, national unity.
Health care is the prerogative of the provinces and should remain as such without the requirement for federal money.
National unity is a dead issue. Quebec has to mature and take responsibility for its own economic needs. The nation has little interest in subsidizing a socialist lifestyle for one set of the population alone.
Aboriginals don’t need more federal funds but less socialist organization of the reserves; that is, they require private property and private economic rules in the reserves – to prevent the endemic corruption of the ‘chiefs’ and the lack of economic activities in those areas.
And it’s quite something to hear the constant almost pathological focus of our media on anti-Harperism. It’s obviously very difficult for these people to accept the ‘will of the people’- after all, they are the Elite.
The interesting fight will be with the NDP. Will Rae want the Liberals to take over the NDP party and its ridings? Will Layton want the NDP to take over the Liberals and its ridings? Fun.
Meanwhile, Harper can focus on governing. That includes opening up the North, getting rid of the reserve system (?!), cleaning up the lakes and waterways, more transportation systems, introducing competition into our communication and transportation, ending privileged farming (eg, Quebec’s dairy farming)..and Joe Molnar’s points as well.

  3. Libels are simply NDPer’s who are prepared to sacrifice their principals for power! They cannot see a purpose in sitting on the sidelines when a few lies will achieve government.

  4. “Mr. Chretien still thinks he was a great success as prime minister, because he won three majorities; other Liberals may be questioning just how well he served interests other than his own, considering the shambles he left behind”
Rae at one time was much the same as Chretien, all about HIM,but now appears to be shell-shocked and floundering. He’s intelligent enough to see that the old LPC tactics will no longer work, and even with the MSM Party still firmly on side, redemption with voters is highly unlikely.
Rae looks to be a lame duck interim leader at best.
Maybe he should ask his brother if he needs an assistant.

  5. “The Canadian voter is not stupid. If they have 2 conservastive parties to vote for they will vote for the real one.”
    Senator Keith Davies
Yjos how he explained John Turner’s disasterous campaign.
My position is the Canadian voters were never really keen on the NDP but when the NDP and LIBRANOs became indistinguishable….
Making Boob Rae interim leader will only reinforce that image.
The COC has taken over the center, with the Reform/Wild Rose on the right and the NDP on the left.
    The LIBRANOs have become history.

  6. Bob Rae’s record over the years and his dalliances with political parties of different stripes gives Canadians good reason not to to trust anything Bob Rae says, and I do not accept that he doesn’t harbor ambitions to become permanent Liberal party leader, if fortunes of the Liberal party change favorably in the next few years. Rae has put himself in a position, to get a jump and distinct advantage on opponents, for the position of permanent party leader, by accepting the interim party leadership, and this was a calculated selfish political maneuver on his part, although he has stated some weasel words that he isn’t interested in the permanent job. Can he resist a draft Bob Rae movement ( orchestrated by Bob Rae operatives in the back rooms of the Liberal party) for permanent party leadership if conditions are right?
Has anybody heard anything similar and convincing from Bob Rae that sounded anything like Lyndon B. Johnson’s statement “I shall not seek and I will not accept the nomination of my party” as permanent leader of the Liberal party.

  7. John Iveson writes column in the National Post “Bob Rae fills a void”.
My question is how can a void fill a void. Bob is a zero and according to the article does not rule out running for the leadership.

  8. Bob Rae, Canadas and the LPC only Great White Dope. Good luck fool, you might just stick to frolicking naked, with that “funny” CBC fellow, Mercer, where only your ego gets bruised. The voters of Canada will never elect you Bob.

  9. Don’t underestimate Rae. He is saavy, articulate and politically smart. He is the most media friendly leader they have had since Chretien.
I don’t agree with him, but absolutely don’t dismiss him.
He is the leader, if I were a Liberal, I would have chosen the first time. Despite his expereince as premier in Ontario that was many moons ago and the electorate forgets.
Harper will have his hands full with him. If that raises Harper’s game, all the better.

  10. What the Liberals need to be reminded of over and over is that they must purge their party of everyone connected with Adscam. That means that every individual named , interviewed or who helped stall committee work and any inquiry, at any level, has to go.
Rae might not like it, but the smelly rotting carcases need purging if he is ever to put their defeat behind him.
As it now stands the federal Liberal party is sinking in it’s own corrupt past and that is why the got slugged so hard.
I don’t think they have the desire nor the veracity to climb out of the muck they created.
I still believe Rae left the NDP because of the entrenched Antisemitism in that party.
For that I give him credit. But, he ain’t going to win this challenge and I don’t knoiw of anyone who could.

  11. “A profound belief in the Charter (of Rights and Freedoms), a profound respect for the diversity of the country, a dislike of authoritarian governments, a dislike of narrow mindedness, a determination to move beyond ideology, a rejection of cheap and easy solutions, a rejection of the bumper-sticker approach to government.”
Thts the whole Liberal Party in a nut shell. Add contempt for Canadians who are not communists . You than have the whole liberal agenda.
Its not like I or anyone makes this up. Its been standard Liebreal policy since PET.
    JMO

  12. The Liberal Party: “A profound belief in the Charter (of Rights and Freedoms), a profound respect for the diversity of the country, a dislike of authoritarian governments, a dislike of narrow mindedness, a determination to move beyond ideology, a rejection of cheap and easy solutions, a rejection of the bumper-sticker approach to government.”
The Charter is filled with unworkable contradictions, setting up minority groups with more rights than individuals.
The fact of the HRCs denies any respect for the ‘diversity of the country’ since anyone with a different viewpoint, counter to the privileged groups (gays, women, visible minorities, etc) is attacked by these ‘courts’.
‘Dislike of authoritarian governments’? Heh, it was the Liberals who set up the mandatory long term census with the jail sentence if you didn’t fill it out. When Harper made it voluntary and withdrew the jail sentence – the Liberals went ballistic.
Narrow-mindedness? Those HRCs, so beloved of the Liberals, sure are narrow-minded. Try saying anything outside of the politically correct and see what happens. And how they fought against SUN TV news coming to Canada..
Moving beyond ideology? The Liberals are entrenched in ideology. It’s called a belief that they ought to be in power. Period.
What the heck is wrong with cheap and easy solutions? So, they prefer expensive and hard to implement ones? Why?
Bumper stickers? Heh – remember the Liberal ads attacking Harper..the ones with ‘guns in your cities’?

  13. Kelly McParland is talking about irrelevancies. The first thing the Liberal party of Canada has to do is prise itself
from the icy grip of the Toronto legal establishment. It is all the worse that they are “philanthropists”.
A party owned by the big Toronto lawyers (and make that BIG Toronto lawyers) is never going anywhere in the West
and it is never going anywhere in Quebec, a point well understood by Stephane Dion (and that explains the knife in his back).
The success of the LPC in Atlantic Canada is probably due to extensive inbreeding. 🙂 🙂
The LPC needs to work on its popularity.
E.g. of the 18 Liberal majority governments since Confederation, only three
were elected with a majority of the popular vote
(Laurier in 1900 and 1904, and King in 1940).
The much vaunted Trudeau never received 50% of the popular vote, nor did Jean Chretien.

  14. By ensuring “a rejection of cheap and easy solutions” ‘Bunghole Bob’ ensures the rejection of the citizenry.

  15. The problem for the Liberals is twofold:
    1. Figure out how to be different from the Conservatives without looking like Knee-Dippers.
    2. Figure out how to get anyone to notice them.
The Liberals: suppose they held a party and no one came?

  16. McParland: “In any case, it’s not really Mr. Rae’s place to create a platform for the party.”
Well, good luck with that. As far as I can make out, Bob Rae is a megalomaniac: Here I come to save the day!, like Mighty Mouse.
‘Only thing is, Mighty Mouse was a cute, amusing cartoon, and Bob Rae is neither cute nor amusing.
As others have pointed out, the stench of AdScam and a lot of other Liberal skullduggery is still hanging around, and Canadians aren’t likely to buy this smelly brand; it’s bad for our health.
Add to these past scandals and misdemeanors the fact that Rae is intimately connected with Power Corporation, through both the Liberal$ and his brother, John, who’s a CEO for Power Corp, and it strains credibility to think that he’ll be able to convince Canadians that it’s possible to reform the Liberal brand anytime soon.
The biggest favour Rae could do for the LPC is to get the heck out of the way. Of course, he has no intention of doing this and has insisted that he be smack-dab in the middle of the mess.

  17. Soiled path of a CAREER polititian.Yech!
Not my favourite carbon unit by any stretch.
    More pain for him,the better.
