  2. Although I joined Reform in 1987, Mulroney got one last vote from me in the Free Trade election. That issue was too important to fail because of vote-splitting.
    I still remember the mailers/surveys that used to come from H/O in Calgary. There was always a request to use my own postage on the return envelope so that operating expenses could be kept down. Truly humble beginnings and look where we are now!

    I cannot honestly say which of my list I want to get top priority especially after forgetting one MORE important item ……… closing down the taxpayer funding of ALL political partys !!!!
    Implementing the list would put a spanner in Taliban Jack’s communistic/ socialist ambitions for Canada.

  4. OK, if my comment is like a Chinese water torture drip, sor-ree! It needs, nevertheless, to be said that all cultures are not equal.
    Might I remind everyone that Preston Manning, the best Prime Minister Canada never had, along with Robert Stanfield, is a professing and practising Christian, which is one reason why the legacy/consensus media treated him with such disdain and contempt when he was in Ottawa.
    Isn’t it instructive that the people who fought for — and won — the abolition of slavery, at great personal cost, were also professing, practising Christians in England: Gladstone and Wilberforce?
    Now we see the whole political landscape of Canada changed vastly for the better of the ordinary Canadian, who is not a member of one of the chattering class’s special interest groups, by the blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifice of Preston Manning and those politicians he mentored.
    Well-done, Mr. Manning, thou good and faithful servant.

  6. In many ways, Preston Manning has a doppelganger in Sarah Palin. Both are/were visionary, present logical platforms, speak well on issues which appeal to most voters who care to think things out for themselves… and are unelectable.
    Mr. Manning’s irritating voice and milquetoast appearance provided a bounty for the liberals and their accomplices in the MSM with all the ammunition they needed to mock and deride his policies. Most of the electorate swallowed the mockery as based in fact.
    Ms. Palin’s irritating voice and ‘hockey mom’ image similarly provide the US MSM with ample opportunities to deride her platform as simplistic and lacking in depth. I have friends who scoff at her electability out of hand, based on only these superficial criteria.
    Thank God we have Stephen Harper’s resolve and steadfastness, his leadership and vision to have achieved the unexpected, a majority. Now if he only can transform Canada into a nation more in line with conservative values, we can become great at long last. I for one, am crossing my fingers and hoping.

  8. Preston Manning is/was a class act. It’s on his shoulders (Christian, as they happen to be) that we’re celebrating the Conservative majority and seeing a whole, new chapter in the way this country is run.
    Yes, well done, thou good and faithful servant. Borrowing from Saint Thomas More: Preston Manning is Canada’s servant, but God’s first.

  9. Reform was the only political party that I’ve been a member of and have participated in. In 1988 I voted for Stephen Harper when he ran for the Reform party (and lost). I had a chance to see Preston Manning speak once in Vancouver and it was one of the rare times that I agreed with a lot of the things a politician said. During my Reform days I had a chance to meet and talk with Stockwell Day and Keith Martin but I was uncomfortable with the Canadian Alliance. I still have my Reform membership card but my Canadian Alliance card was sent in pieces to Stockwell Day along with a strongly worded letter with my opinions of his support of statist “anti-terrorist” legislation after 11/9/2001.
    What I liked about the Reform party was that it was a very grass-roots organization and I remember attending a nomination meeting in downtown Vancouver and realizing that the 300-400 people there all thought like I did. It was a strange feeling as I was used to constantly being told that my political opinions were “right wing” or odd.
    Now that PMSH has a majority government, what is needed is a rebirth of Reform or the Canadian version of the TEA party. In the same way that the TEA party strategically votes for Republicans in the US, the Canadian TEA party would vote Conservative as long as they remained true to their values. What I learned about politics during the short time I was politically active is that it’s very ugly and a magnet for every psychopath and narcissist with delusions of grandeur. Even in the US where separation of powers and limited government was the goal of the founders, kleptocrats have found a way around these restrictions. Thus the need for a strong organization not affiliated with the Conservative party with the power to bring it down should it get too out of line.

    By way of background, in terms of any perceived sour grapes sentiment, I first campaigned for Reform in 1993, while a business professor at Wilfrid Laurier University (the days of Reg Gosse). I later spent 11 years on Parliament Hill (1995-2006), working for Reform Research, Ian McClelland, Peter Goldring and Lynne Yelich. Preston could have, and should have, effected change from within, in my view. Canada would have been a lot better, a lot earlier.
