Liberal MP pays $25k to cover up staffer’s embezzling?

Glen Pearson, who was recently called London’s Mother Theresa.
“Ontario MP Glen Pearson acknowledged the matter, telling iPolitics he chose to reimburse the House of Commons out of his own pocket rather than take the former staff member to court because he didn’t want the affair to become public and embarrass Parliament.”
He took the money from his kids’ education fund.

  1. The Adscamers and the Nipper Dipper Party – the next four years should be fairly interesting.

  2. Time for ∞² to be a hypocrite. If Glen Pearson is claiming Dad’s rights (Dad was the only guy wronged) … I’m OK … I really don’t care to know any more … I suspect that 96% of Canadians +/-2.9%, 19 times out of 20, are also OK with it.

  3. Glen Douglas Pearson was elected in a by-election on November 27, 2006. His closest competition was Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May, who received 26% of the vote.
His campaign emphasized environmental, health care and accountability issues.

    Accountability issues, heh.
    Kind of embarrassing…

scandalous the amount of hypocrisy in this web site.
linking to wiki, MSM, where will it end?

  5. Mulroney. He was PM recently, wasn’t he?
Oh, right. That was 20 years ago.
    Thanks, ping.

  6. Wiki is a Leftist site.
They have a Left bias, which gives them credibility in this case.
If you have a problem with the fact that Pearson’s first successful election campaign emphasized environmental, health care and accountability issues then address the reason why you have a problem with that history.

  7. Seems sort of bizarre for a politician to cover someone’s “losses”. Maybe if the staffer was an
obvious junkie but everyone mistakenly thought the perp was from a rich family “so who cares”
and then things go to hell, that might require some remorse.

  8. To the unpleasant A-hole who posted at 10:59:
My post was a question (these things ??? are called question marks) to any Lawyer who might be following this thread. You obviously got a different impression from the background info than I did. Are you a lawyer? If not, why did you stick your shitty oar in?

  9. This guy has less than five years pension time as a federal MP, so he won’t qualify for the big bucks. That starts after six years. He does have a pension from 29 years on the London fire department and of course he was making $150k annually since 2006. He can spare $25,000 better than most people.
I do think that if spending cuts are necessary, and they are, the parliamentary liquor store is a good place to start.

  10. It’s too bad they wrote that part about his kids’ education fund. I get the sense that the reporter asked him where the funds came from. As most people well know, I’m a conservative as well as a Conservative – but not every Liberal is dirty or evil, shockingly.
Glen’s actually a thoroughly decent sort, and regardless of his politics, he really does walk his talk.

  11. Ping,
    Here are some differences
    1) The staffer didnt approach the governemnt and say he didnt pay, actually he did pay just with someone elses money. Mulroney approached the government, if they had found him first then it would have led to charges and fines
    2) There is no program for others providing retribution. In Mulroneys case it was a formal program he went through
That being said MBM would have deserved whatever storm rained down in him if he had been caught before he went through the tax program.
Pearson is apparently quoite wealthy to be able to use $25,000 of after tax money to pay off a bill. Thats not a crime, but really what is he covering up. If he simply said that he had a private arrangement whereby the perp will pay him back then I think everyone would be happier, I know I would be.
But 25,000 in liquor? Thats likre stocking a restaurant,or chain of restaraunts. It really is theft.
The name will come out anyway.

  12. ping: “you want recent? ok, google ‘brian mulroney income tax’.”
Nice try. Brian Mulroney was a Progressive Conservative, under whose watch the Conservative Party in Canada was just about wiped out.
He’s a Power Corporation boy, in the company of Trudeau, Chretien, Martin, and Rae. ‘Nuff said.
At least you’re getting an education here.

  13. @Chris: Thanks, I had no idea. They talk about Glen Pearson and his family very frequently in the London press, & it’s only ever about the kids they adopted from Sudan.

  14. If a Conservative mp did something like this I would love them for it, ergo I can only have all kinds of respect for Pearson. As far as I’m concerned it’s a scandal reflecting on only that staffer themselves as long as taxpayers didn’t end up on the hook for it. And we didn’t, for their expenses or for the expenses of a court case, thanks to Glenn.
