“How Little Old Me Almost Threw The Canadian Election”

Good grief.

In early 2009, Michael Ignatieff had been, or was about to be installed as Liberal leader (I’m too lazy to look up the exact dates). I was doing an image search for something (I can’t remember exactly what), and came across the above picture. I noted that the soldier in the middle was a dead ringer for Iggy (the photo appeared on a military-themed collection of images with no indication of their nationality or where they were taken). I thought they were most likely Americans (or possibly Brits). So I decided to make up a little story about Ignatieff and his rather muscular approach to foreign affairs.
The original post is here. You can see that I pretty obviously intended it as a joke (if there’s any doubt, click on the “enhanced” popup that I included with it).

And the rest is history.
It’s a pattern with this party. Just when things start to go really well, someone decides to let the children play with the machinery.

  1. How else will the children learn, Kate. We all can’t crazy glue our teacher’s stuff to her desk.
    MM

  2. It is totally frustrating how the ad campaigns and the war rooms manage to continually shoot themselves in the foot with these juvenile tactics.
Sheesh. Jack Layton’s ads come across as mature compared to those amateurs in the Conservative war rooms.

  3. The current media arousal for all things Jack, mean just that Jack sW@t. If any of these media whores even stop to think of the ramifications of electing this FREELOADER on the public teat his whole life, to any office above dogcatcher, they obviously hate their pension funds, children, business, job and freedom. Cap and Trade will decimate Alberta, I have lived through 1 National Energy Program, nearly lost everything I owned, I will not sit back as our country self destructs by following life failures, aka MSM reporters down the socialist garden path. If Harpers people have made mistakes they pale in comparison to electing this Lenin look and act alike. Brad Wall saved Saskatchewan from NDPEE total devastation, Gordon Cambell got B.C. out of the NDPEE ditch, Mike Harris turned Ont from the Boob Rae iceberg, wake up Canada.

  4. Really, ‘Iggy and the guys’? C’mon…
And the rifle? Clearly this was a joke.
    Good for Peladeau.

  5. Ok, CPC, the Liberals are toast, its time for us to grow up and mature. The electorate is trying to tell us something by teasing the NDP numbers up. Not sure it will stick on election day but it is a warning. People are tired of Liberal vs. Conservative partisan bickering and are willing to let a loonytoon like Jack Layton run things if we don’t smarted the-$#%#-up.

  6. I do not buy this one as “kids” at play. Appears to be no photoshopping, just more of the media spin trying to dig up anything.

  7. The thing that strikes me about this whole thing is how the media has accused Harper of being so controlling of the message and the media. How does one explain this?
    ‘WTF!!!

  8. I think this was just a careless mistake — though innocent enough. I expect the original researcher did not click on the pop-up — and actually the guy does look just like Iggy. It really is an astonishing coincidence — rather than deliberate deception. The mistake is quite understandable — a practical joke misunderstood and amplified.

  9. Set you free – I so agree. Every Liberal should vote NDP this election because Jack is so mature. Especially in Toronto.

  10. Is this a joke? Does anyone think that was actually Ignatieff? And so what if it was, he’s got a ton of pro America pro war opinion pieces that he has put his name to.
I can see why this is being pimped by the anti Harper media (and I am beginning to have my doubts about how dedicated M. Peladeau is to creating a successful non Liberal network) but I fail to see conservatives need to pile on to this utter non scandal.
Its not that children play with the machinery, its that conservatives subjegate themselves to the Liberal narrative on B.S like this.
Seriously, if Harper were to fart in public, it would be a scandal, but only until Jack Layton walked in and laid a giant 3 coil steamer in the middle of the room. At that point the media would start the narrative that Harpers fart was indicitive of his inability to take a strong leadership position – unlike Layton who showed real courage and leadership by crapping in front of the Canadian public, while adoringly describing the sheer artistry of the moment and result.
Honestly, we really don’t even need our opponents to beat us up when we are more than willing to engage in this ridiculous sort of self-flagelation over nothing – and it is nothing.
I’d prefer not to have an unelected coalition governing Canada, so lets not help them get there.

  11. I like to think of the CPC as the party of Not Lying. They say it, they do it.
This is part of not lying. Employee either lied or frigged up by the numbers, they FIRED him, job done, honor preserved, justice served. Back to the winning the election.
It isn’t as if Iggy didn’t do a tire smoking 180 on pretty much all his previously held moral, ethical and political positions, is it? You read anything he wrote or said prior to winning the Lyin’ Lib leadership, it is as if a completely different human being stole his identity these days.
That’s why he’s going to LOSE this thing and lose it big. He can’t be an honest as head of the Liberal Party, and it shows. Harshly. Like lightning at midnight.

  12. I was involved with two other people in interviewing a number of applicants for an office position during the last two days. We each had a number of questions that expanded on the resumes submitted in order to determine the level of competence and capability to do the job.
It sometimes appears that questions asked of prospective war room employees are sadly deficient in some areas or supervision to prevent such incidents is totally lacking.
It seems like the lefty parties can get away with it, but the Conservatives are held to a higher standard by a media determined to sabotage the party if possible.

  13. Way to go Kate. Sadly there is commonality between the pooping puffin and this prank. The individual ibvolved, brilliant as he is, just can’t seem to help himself. This one is even stranger, because its not like they needed to do more damage to iggy.
More proof that there is a child involved….that the child is upset. The child was spared the problem last time, Mr Sparrow took the bullet, so why he apparently threw a tantrum this time is beyond me.
I would be happier if they the boy genuis had spent his time finding that insight into Layton and the NDP that the Cons need now. Wrong target wrong time and wrong method.
    Anyway. Move on.

  14. I still say it’s Conservative majority time come next Tuesday…The biggest losers are going to be the Bloc and the Liberals…Montreal and Toronto area will provide most of the extra Con sets needed for the majority with a sprinkle from other parts of the Country like the Maritimes.
The Conservatives have started airing their “Patriotic” tv ad…The one that sounds like Harper is imitating JFK in an outside event…That one is a true winner and should be aired as much as possible between now and Monday.

  15. Our biannual hate-athon for “all things conservative” is drawing to a close. Ignatieff fades, Jack surges; who knew he could even sew. Will Canadians drive themselves off a cliff with a Jack led coalition; stay tuned. Not all is lost. The kook class has been energized and their hate and bile have perfectly legitimate outlets in all the media.

  16. Well, I made it thru our November reckoning, I was especially pleased to see my fellow Americans realize Obambi Barry had not in reality ever walked across Lake Michigan.
    Good Luck Comrades.

  17. Unfortunately, PMSH is the only adult in parliament and federal government. The Libs make major errors (the command structure in the party) but not small ones.
The Conservatives do not adequately justify or promote their own positions. Just look at the miserable job they have done with the F-35.
    To my recollection, the idea that a hyperagile “fifth-generation” fighter won’t leave much else in the air simply hasn’t been put across;
or that there is no alternative to it.

  18. Even though I’ll be voting for them again (optimizing amongst a series of sub-optimal choices) I’m the first to admit that, especially during elections, the Conservatives give really good bonehead.

  19. As I’ve posted before, Iggy looks very uncomfortable as a Liberal because it’s not the same Liberal party he grew up with.
With former NDP premiers Bob Rae and Ussal Dosanj in the caucus, the Libs have moved way left under Stephane Dion.
That allowed the Conservatives to occupy the former ground the LIberals held.
Wouldn’t it be rich if whatever Liberal members are left crossed the floor to join up with the the Conservative party to fend off the NDP?
Or, as Charles Adler suggested today, a Conservative/Liberal coalition.
Notice how the Conservative ads are all anti-Iggy, not anti-Liberal?
    Hmmmmm.
