Election 2011: Useful Details

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Global News, April 25thElections Canada warned Canadians this week that the election law prohibits people from “premature transmission” of results from one part of the country before polls close in another time zone.
CBC, April 27th“The only [advance polling] difference among the ridings was that Charlottetown was down slightly – seven per cent. Everywhere else is up,” said Karen Janigan for Elections Canada. “Cardigan 49 per cent, Egmont 34 per cent and Malpeque 34 per cent. A little high but not compared to some other places. Halifax is 97 per cent. Saint John, New Brunswick was up 101 percent.”

  1. I’m sure that, once Mr. Layton is PM, he’ll consign this outlandishly outdated law to the ashbin of history. In much the same we he will do the same to the entire country.

  2. What an I missing in the juxtapose here? Global story talking about poll party results on election night. CBC story talking advance poll turnout numbers. Seems like apples and oranges to me and not a double standard.

  3. The solution, of course, is for Elections Canada to only start cross-Canada ballots AFTER the last poll closes in the West. So obviously simple. But election RESULTS are much less of a problem when viewed in the light of what’s going on before we cast our ballots.
As I see it, the problem is more fundamental that most are thinking about this coalition possibility, and a lot more ominous for Canada. The unprecedented assault by George Soros’ organizations in this election is frightening, combined with other natural Canadian lobbying of which I am less concerned. Why is Soros & Co involved? I take a shot at it here:

If you are truly concerned about Canada, read it. If you feel no different afterwards, fine. At least you are aware of what’s going on.

  4. Hey Kate;
Has there been any exit polls? With such a large increase in advanced polling, exit polling would be useful.
Are we seeing an Obamaesque effect here with Layton? I mean was the Union movement extremely organized and did they get out extrodinary numbers of young and “poor” to vote for more goodies for themselves?
Certainly the vote mob tactics like we saw in Guelph would fall into this category.

  5. The juxtapose is that for an organization so dedicated to shutting down private citizens on the premise that they may influence voter turnout or behavior, they aren’t nearly as circumspect about releasing detailed advance polling data that could have the very same result.

  6. Jack’s pain medication must be kicking in…
After Jack becomes PM, there will not be enough pain medication in the world to assuage my grief!
    I am despair!
    Humph.

  7. There is no way that Jack will become Prime Minister because there will be no coalition if he knocks the Bloc into second place in Quebec.
Do you honestly think that Duceppe would be interested in an alliance with the party which engineered his downfall?
With a Jack/Iggy show likely to rain money down on Quebec in a coalition scenario, I think Gilles will find a reason to support the Conservatives if there is a minority.
Layton’s surge in popularity changed the whole outlook on a possible coalition.
Hell, even the Dippers in Saskatchewan now think they’re going to win in the November election here.

  8. Private at 2:14 PM, I don’t think it has anything to do with Layton. I think people had made up their minds and did not see any reason to wait any longer. In other words, the campaign has been pretty much a waste of time, words and breath.
My only hope is that the turnout on May 2 will be similarly larger than what it has been in recent elections. I would be nice to see that Canucks are not apathetic any more, or at least not this time; that if we’re pissed of with our political class, we intend to do something about it.

  9. clair voyant at 3:23 PM: “..even the Dippers in Saskatchewan now think they’re going to win in the November election here.”
No way on God’s green earth, if I can help it. I think the fate of the Dipper brand in Saskatchewan is the same as that of the Lib brand in Ottawa. Done. Over. Yesterday’s solution to 19th century problems.

  10. Laws are for little people. And yes turnout is a voting result, it probably isnt the critical one mind you. I never understood why they couldnt just make all of the pols close at the same time anyway. That eliminated the problem.

  11. Malpeque at 34% increase at the advance polls…that would be the riding of tingle-in-his-pee-pee-over-the-CWB, Wayne Easter.
One can only hope that the good folks in that PEI riding are turning out in response to Easter reneging on his PROMISE to vote out the long gun registry and are voting for a new MP.

  12. Hate to say it folks, but by the looks of the latest polls, we are going to be stuck with socialists. Layton just overtook Harper on the Nanos Leadership Index. Conservative Majority? Not a chance….unfortunately.

  13. Louise
Yes, I totally agree with you and I have been predicting the same fate for the NDP as the Liberals here are currently experiencing.
But that doesn’t prevent the morons in orange from dreaming in technicolor!!

  14. More juxtaposition:
Layton Apr 27 – “A lot of families make plans and if we had fixed election dates that were being properly honoured — we know Stephen harper broke that law himself — then it would be a lot easier for [vacationing] candidates to be able to make the plans to participate”
Layton Apr 11 – “For most Canadians, if you don’t show up for work, you can’t expect a promotion.”
Canadian Press: “Layton would not make the connection when a reporter reminded him of his own words to Michael Ignatieff about his attendance record in the House”.

  15. the word “results” is not defined in the Act or reg’s. Very easy to argue that results refers to the votes for specific candidates.

  16. “Do you honestly think that Duceppe would be interested in an alliance with the party which engineered his downfall?”
Why be on the outside of the candy store looking through the window when you can be inside eating candy?
Duceppe would ally with anyone or any party that would increase his ability to steer more money to Quebec.
He is a pragmatic politician who knows why the Bloc exisits.

  17. I don’t believe any of the polls from the msm. They are all push polls and one need look no farther than the “polls” taken before Rob Ford was elected. They all showed boy George right on his heels until the election results came in and Ford won hands down, it was in no way a close race. I think alot of people have already voted because their mind was made up long ago and the only party bleeding votes to Layton is count Iggula which should ensure the conservative majority this country so desperately needs.

  18. If you believe all these recent, hyperventilating polls, we will need about 20 blue liberals to walk over. Are there that many blues left in the entire Liberal Party, never mind the rump of Liberal MPs that will be left over after May 2?

  19. Oz
Duceppe is like every politician, his only interest is self preservation. And he would be looking at a short political lifespan if he aligns himself with Layton, who will be doing nothing else but trying to make himself look good to the people who sparked his ascension, les Quebecois.

  20. If you take Quebec out of the equation it’s clear that the Conservatives are the only National party.
What I find dreadfully interesting is the prospect of Jack Layton being Prime Minister. I believe that Jack Layton’s experience as Prime Minister would be similar to that of Barak Obama’s Presidential experience down south. If Jack Layton were Prime Minister he’d have a difficult time extracting our troops from Afghanistan, and would likely find himself sending troops to another Middle East engagement; just like Barak Obama. If Jack Layton were Prime Minister he’d have a hard time not reducing taxes on corporations and “the rich” ; just like Barak Obama. Finally, if Jack Layton were Prime Minister he would have a hard time justifying bringing terrorists back to the mainland for trials and incarceration instead of the military tribunals and Guantanamo; just like Obama.
The bottom-line is, Jack Layton has never, until recently, been held to account for his ‘pie in the sky’ ideology; just like Obama. When Jack Layton’s fringe philosophy is in the spotlight, by its nature it cannot withstand scrutiny. That much is certain. Whether in Canada or the USA, fringe groups (especially socialists) are most effective from the opposition where they can constantly hurl rhetorical rocks under the cover of “fighting the man”; but, once said socialists get into office, the power of reality shatters their agenda and exposes the truths of their ideology. Then guess what; now you’re “the man” and the unreasonable socialist base is once again alienated.
In my view, the biggest mistake the socialist movement made abroad (Canada & USA) is mistaking Barak Obama’s election as a mandate to impose socialism on America(and by default Canada). The socialists mistook Obama’s mandate as an approval of 20th century socialism instead of what it was; a protest vote against George W Bush mixed in with a little bit of American Idol.
Jack Layton’s flirtation with the PMO will “cut the grass so the snakes can show” (I gotta thank my little homie *Jack8 for that though – Jay Z(revised)) and make the Harper Majority a reality. Look for the Conservatives to convert a few Blue Liberals to tip the balance IF the coalition coup makes its attempt to form government. I’d say it’s now 70-30 that Harper gets a majority of some sort. Thanks Jack!

  21. The advance polls were on holidays so I would expect a higher turnout. It used to be you required a reason to vote in an advance poll. Now it is just another voting day. People will take their time off work to get groceries or something.
As far as exit polls we don’t do them in Canada and judging from what I have seen in the US it isn’t much of a loss. I watched a video of voters for bambam that thought Republican policies were his. Just shook my head as I looked into the eyes of doom.
As far as the polls, when it is time to mark the x sanity quite often wins. You don’t have to like the guy too much if he isn’t going to screw you to the wall. If you don’t have a land line they don’t ask you. From past experience, Conservatives don’t tell you how they will vote..it’s none of your business.

  22. Polls objective? Behave yourself!
Witness how easy we can help an online poll go sideways….
Pushpolls…manipulating the result by the question or just fabricating the results from the whole cloth–IOW an advertizemant in disguise as an objective survey.
However, those exit-poll interviews of the Obama voters claiming support of Obama’s policies and not minding Sarah Pallin was his running mate….. are so illuminating…such insight upon the sophistocated voter….(sarc/)
Yeah those polls worked so well to predict the GTA mayorality election…..we have seen better weather forecasts…

  23. so Kate, the jux is about the difference between the spirit and the letter of the law.
gee, have Conservatives never ever ever in all the history of elections done that?
why not post a followup jux about hypocrisy across the board?

  24. Call your doctor right away if you experience side effects such as blurred vision, headaches, indigestion or painful elections that last four hours or more.

  25. Layton wants to re-open the Constitution for Quebec. I say good. This is the time for Albertan’s to tell Ottawa, that No more Multicult, No more Equalization, We want Fisheries and Oceans out of Alberta, we want all of our Rocky Mountain Parks back, we want to directly elect our Head of State the GG. We want a full Triple EEE Senate. We want to directly elect all judges in Alberta no more Ottawa appointments. And we want to directly elect our own Alberta Head of State our Lt. Gov. We also want full control of our own Immigration. So yes Jack “Lenin’s Transplanted Head” Layton, Alberta wants Constitutional Reform as well. Can’t come fast enough.
