1) In a contemporary argument about the left and antisemitism one must only look as far as previous posts on this site under the same “Scratch a Leftist”. It’s peculiar that those on the left (in the year 2011) are so happy to promote the UN as a solver of issues when there are conferences of hate like DURBAN I and II.
2) The concerns that Nazism and Stalinism had with judaism are in fact the same arguments that the left has against against Israel and capitalism. Jews have historically (at least according to hearsay) been inequitably rich in comparison to their neighbours. I would equate this the stereotype of a Jew lawyer or accountant. Racists in dire economic times (and when aren’t things dire for most people who vote left) blame the wealth-holders because it’s “unfair” that those people have unequal wealth. They blame Israel for unequal use of force, and having the economic means to maintain such a ridiculous compromise…
i) Hitler’s rise to power occurred during a sustained period of depression. Scapegoating Jews (which was already tradition in Europe) made political sense at the time to show that he was helping the ‘socialism’ part of Nazism by giving a more equitable distribution of the wealth.
ii) Stalin killed about 10 million Jews because they were enemies, either personal or of communism. Their acquired wealth was collectivized amongst the Soviet (leadership).
3) Hitler didn’t have the support of the business community, that’s a falsehood. He had the power of young thugs and people who were seeking some sort of collective (it’s that word again) identity after the shattering defeat in WW1 and the humiliating treaty of Versailles. What most people don’t understand is that the Confederation of Germany happened at Versailles, so it was a kick in the teeth to any German Nationalist.
