Brits join ground fight in Libya
Foreign Secretary William Hague said today: “The National Security Council has decided that we will now move quickly to expand the team already in Benghazi to include an additional military liaison advisory team.
“This contingent will be drawn from experienced British military officers.”
Mr Hague said the move was needed to help protect civilians in Libya and was compatible with the United Nations resolution which authorised a no-fly zone.
Get our pilots out of there.
Protecting civilians from brutes such as Gadhafi (Khaddaffi, Quadhafi, Kadhafi etc) is a laudable goal but only if we are sure there will be no unintended consequences. The Libyan conflict is a perfect launch pad for such consequences because we know squat about the rebels. My bet is that they are the Muslim Brotherhood pursuing their agenda for a world-wide caliphate. If they are, we should be bombing them because they are our mortal enemies.
this whole thing has been a clusterf*ck from the get go. If the west had really wanted gadaffi duck out of there then the CIA, Mossad, MI6, mabahith, DCRI, SVR, SAS, or any number of clandestine outfits should have taken him out. To leave it to the “rebels” was a foolish move. I figure France just wanted to safeguard it’s oil supply and everyone (UN, NATO) bought into the protecting freedom thing.
Not a new occurrence. The military always underestimates the amount of ammunition a war requires. In 1914, both sides had expected an artillery consumption of 30 rounds/gun/day. The actual expenditure in August was in excess of 300. The German offensive collapsed not just because of exhaustion and casualties but because of nearly complete depletion of artillery shells.
It happened to Israel in Yom Kippur. By Day 4 they were running out of tank ammunition, particularly HE and had to rely on airlift from the US.

This has caused me to think: why does Canada need the F-35? The whole Libyan exercise has shown that the most sophisticated fighter/bombers of the most advanced air forces in the world are ineffective at stopping a ground force where the commanders have the tiny bit of good sense NOT to mass their forces (unlike, say, Saddam Hussein) as easy targets. So what, exactly, is the mission of the F-35’s?
It’s not like we’re going to be invaded from Asia or Europe. If the Americans come after us, I’m going survivalist. And the Russians can’t even deal with their Chechens, so who really believes they’re going to come over the pole to get us?
It seems to me the real threats to our sovereignty come from the sea – in the Arctic, human smuggling, overfishing, drug smuggling, etc. Our defense dollars would be better spent on the navy than fighters, and in the air force, on transport, choppers, and search-and-rescue rather than fighters with no apparent mission.
So what, exactly, is the mission of the F-35’s?

Fighters eat helicopters and other support aircraft for breakfast, and most fighters are fighter/bombers, not just interceptors/escorts for strategic bombers.
NATO is dropping “dumb” bombs in Libya.
In a hot war against a major power or power block, fighter/bombers would be dropping smart guided missiles/bombs and wiping out ground forces after gaining air superiority.
Modern wars are ‘come-as-you-are’ affairs, unlike wars of the past, the time to acquire state-of-the-art war planes is now, not after a life and death battle starts and acquisition is years down the road.

A quick background, I am a serving British Soldier having been to every British theatre of conflict since 93.
I find the lack of understanding with regards to the political / military quagmire in the muslim war the western world now finds itself in unbelievable on this blog.
First to understand the Libya campaign you must understand the overstretch in both the British and US militaries at the moment. (no other militaries conduct the unpleasant deployments to any real large scale independently) (American procrastination over The British in Sangin has been shown to be a folly, Sangin was arguably safer before we handed it to the US Marine Corp. I know I was there) Also the galvanization of ill educated Muslims within western communities and in the OPEC sphere of influence against the perceived Encroachment of Muslim principles must be considered. We have neither the resources to commit ground forces to Libya in support of the population(rebels) or the will as it would always be perceived as another Iraq regardless of the truth. Neither could we do nothing as when the rebels eventually gain power which they will. They would not forgive us and we would have more hostility between an oil producing country and the west. Remember oil is the life blood of everyones economy. Therefore the air campaign and military advisors is the only acceptable solution.
The reason the air campaign is limited is smart bombs which are being used (paveways etc) still cause collateral damage. We cannot afford to be responsible for civilian casualties. Their families don’t care if it was an accident. We only create more enemies. Therefore air strikes are limited to situations deemed risk adverse for civilian casualties. These tactics are a result of the Bosnian, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts lessons. If you need to bash politics. Look at the duplicity of the German response. Sit on the fence and hope not to offend any possible victor. Then when it’s over be the first to offer oil and reconstruction contracts. I’ve seen it in too many theaters of war.
Excuse my rant. I’ve been in too many theaters of war to spout rubbish or sit on the fence. Politics and War fighting are to indistinguishable these days. Everything has innumerable consequences due to world media.
We can only hope the path we take is the right one guided by experience and a unrelenting adherence to the core of our beliefs. The means does not justify the end in this modern world.
To preach means to follow the lesson in it’s application. Not to do so only condemns us. We must stay strong even when those around us are weak.

Some of the issues you talk about with ease have puzzled some of the greatest military minds of our time.
Equipment procurement seems so easily decided.
The adage procure for the next war not the current do they not sound familiar.
It’s the context of the next war that’s the problem.
Since the soviets fell the future procurement is more difficult.
A campaign cannot be won from the air. It always requires ground troops. Ground troops require support aircraft and gunships.
These in turn require fighters.
Fighters require an absence of SAMS
Nothing is invincible.
We have not fought a conventional war since the Iraq invasion.

Strategy is designed by high level command.
Tactics is personal to the combatants.

Where in stating I believe in the genocide have I taken their side. Give it up man. It’s tedious. I only state I don’t agree with your opinions on the subject. It’s my right. I don’t live in a Muslim state therefore I have a right to voice my opinions.
I’m not in the habit of making false claims about my profession but form whatever opinion that would make you feel safe and won’t challenge you opinions.
If you want to discuss with a yes man, banter with somebody else. You are becoming tedious.

That’s pretty much word-for-word what I said to a friend a couple weeks ago 🙂 We seem to have much in common, though your military experience clearly exceeds my own. I never got to deploy to the Balkans, but I’ve heard similar stories from others in the CF. The Medak Pocket incident was one of the few times where UN forces actually stood their ground, yet even there we were unable to prevent the Croats from staging their own genocide. Srebrenica may have been the most glaring example, but there plenty of similar operations carried out by all of the involved parties, albeit it on a smaller scale.
