  1. I guess Suzuki was ‘not available’.
Another example of NDP and their American style politics….
    oh wait..

  2. I happen to be married to an old ‘hard-rock’ miner, now retired…he has worked at the mine in Thompson.I would LOVE to see Moore come face to face with a few of those guys, that have different political views. Also,I don’t know one old-school miner that wants a handout,or ndp ‘inclined’…they work bloody hard for every dollar, and have no time for ‘welfare bums’ especially the kind you find in Thompson. Ooops, was that too ‘racist?’

  3. But, the NDP support Kyoto don’t they? She should be happy that a dirty, stinky, environment destroying refinery is being shut down, shouldn’t she?

  4. Union? Check.
    High taxes? Check.
    Environmental regulation? Check.
    Disfavored industry? Check.
Losing jobs to overseas oligarchs? Checkmate.

  5. Mines open. Smelters open. Mines close. Smelters close.
Then the usual suspects get involved in prolonging the agony for political gain and patronage crumbs. Like the politicians who shoveled taxpayers money into ridiculous east coast coal mines and other white elephants for decades rather than tell people to wise up, get their —- together, and train for real jobs in the real world.

  6. I was just reading the article. Closed that window, then went back about 45 seconds later and it appears the comments have disappeared into the memory hole…

  7. Niki Ashton, the MP for Churchill, was only two years old when Ghost Buster’s was released. But I can’t help but think that it has had a strong influence on how she thinks problems can be solved.

  8. Here is some further context to this issue:
“The Thompson smelter and refinery will be closed because there is a shortage of mineral reserves for it to process. Vale SA also decided it could not meet tough new federal sulphur dioxide emissions standards that would require it to cut emissions from the Thompson smelter by 88 per cent in five years.”
“Ashton said if its federal standards involved, clearly the federal government can be part of the solution.”

So the NDP is willing to throw the environment under the bus in this case. Call Suzuki!
The linked article also notes that Vale will be investing $10 billion in their other Canadian operations.
BTW – I’ve worked in both the smelter and the mine in Thompson – a very long time ago.

Niki Ashton should check out this CBC documentary on Michael Moore, after which she won’t be so convinced he’s a guy that will help anyone, except himself.
Everywhere Michael Moore has worked on a documentary,he has left behind a whole lot of disillusioned people, many angry enough to call him the hypocrite he is.
From Flint,Michigan and his first Big One,”Roger and Me” to Cuba and “Sicko”, people involved are realising Moore is nothing more than a crafty liar making a lot of money on THEM,and doing absolutely nothing to really help.
Silly little Leftie,MM couldn’t give a damn about you.

  10. Hudson Bay Mining closed their smelter in Flin Flon after 80 years of operation. It’s cheaper to ship product to Quebec & have it refined there. As well old smelters like the one in Flin Flon and even the one in Thompson are targets for the green crowd.
