  7. Hedonists and egoists, several if not many, was the story of the Kennedy political role.
    However, for the majority of people who were exploited, many were willing to be used for reflected glory or perceived opportunity.
    Except for the tragedy of Miss Mary Jo Kopechne, who although she was not forced into the car, was abandoned to her death by the baby brother Kennedy.
    Over the decades the family did use their fame and power to accomplish good. Each of those who comment might consider in their reflecting if they had the same opportunities would they respond in a more responsible manner.
    I think the majority of individuals who come to this post and the older brothers of the Kennedy clan would not have ran from Chappaquiddick. This is just my opinion but please consider this in determining whether in your estimation the good balanced out the bad. Cheers

  8. The Kennedys are very over rated. JFK was in Dallas on Nov 22/63 to build bridges with the Democrats he had alienated during his administration. Prior to his assination the MSM had many pundits speculating JFK could not win in ’64.
    RFK only ran for POTUS AFTER LBJ lost the NH primary and refused to run in ’68. RFK did not have the stones to try to unseat a seating POTUS. Others did.
    Contrary to popular history, JFK lost the popular vote in ’60 by 60,000 votes. There were 160,000 votes in Mississippi cast for the POTUS canididate of the Southern Democratic Party; a segregationist splinter party from the Democratics. The Southern Democrats only existed for the 1960 election so most historians view them as Democrats and hence the votes are counted for JFK. As Mississippi is a winner take all state for the Electoral College JFK did take all Mississippi EC votes. Since Nixon did believe in the US constitution, he saw no purpose in a recount.

Election, the Chicago/Cook County Democratic Machine stealing the Illinois popular and electoral vote for Jack Kennedy, thereby fraudulently and unconstitutionally “electing” Kennedy over the rightful winner, Richard Nixon.

    To me Kennedy was the scariest President in my lifetime. Every time he went up against the USSR he lost. He gave up bases in Turkey to end the missile crisis. He abandoned Cubans under fire on the beach during the Bay of Pigs.
    Nope not sad to see that dynasty fall.

    2 – Yep, it would be far more humane if, instead of euthanizing the babies, we just sterilize the parents, as promoted by that ultra extreme right winger, Tommy Douglas

    There are a good many people (like me, fr’instance) that believe the seeds of Watergate were sown in Cook County in 1960. Nixon had no need for any of the illegal activities of CREEP in 1972; he was going to crush McGovern in any event. But certain the Presidency had been stolen from him in 60, he was determined not to let it happen a second time.
    And it’s a pity, because despite the man’s flaws, by all policy standards, he should be considered one of America’s most innovative presidents. Ending Vietnam, opening up the door to China, closing the gold window – these were all bold steps, and all out of step with Republican ideology. Instead, he’s remembered for a 3rd-rate burglary, and a 4th-rate cover up. Perhaps, fifty years from now, history will be kinder.

    beagle, as for the Special Olympics, it was the Kennedy women who initiated them. So, yes, something good came from the Kennedys, but not so much from the males, who were grandstanders and womanizers. They were lucky to have the media on their side, as the Trudeaus do here. It’s not been until fairly recently that we found out that Jack seems to have been addicted to sex. It wasn’t uncommon for him to take a few minutes from a party and have his way with a woman who attracted him. Reports of this kind of dalliance abound.
    One actually begins to feel some sympathy for Jackie O.

  20. Many Canadians few the Trudeau’s as the ‘cheap’ version of the Kennedy’s. At least the Kennedy’s didn’t embrace the communists and Jack Kenndey did serve his country when needed.

  24. The Kennedys are trash. They always were and they still are. They combine all the worst propensities of Old Money and Nouveau Riche; I know that sounds ludicrously pretentious, but if you think about it, it’s simply true. America doesn’t need a royal family, and nobody needs a Kennedy. (Yes beagle, Eunice was a good person. The exception that that proves etc.)

    Bonus round, can you name the US Senator whose car killed more people than Dick Cheney’s shotgun?
