I would like to give a happy birthday greeting to retired Senator Peter A. Stollery from Ontario. Senator Stollery turned 75 today after serving in the Senate 29 years. Congratulations sir.
Senator Stollery caucused with the Liberals. Now with a new appointment, the Conservative party will have 53 votes which is an absolute majority. I think an elected senate will be a major issue going forward now that it can not be blocked in the upper house.
Conservative winning today’s by-elections may hasten the issue.
Why oh why did Iggy spend so much capital in Vaughan in a cause that is clearly lost.
It isnt the losing that will be his biggest issue, it is his and his staff’s inability to read the tea leaves.
Ladies and gentleman, meet the next leader of the opposition Jack Layton.
ooooh, there’s a Pirate Party candidate in Winnipeg North!
Funny how Vaughan is reporting much later than the Manitoba ridings, even though Manitoba is at least an hour behind Ontario.
All the polls closed at the same time.
I read a columnist today (can’t remember which one) who already had the spin out that the Conservatives were widely expected to win all three by-elections.
Initial results looks like they might pick up Vaughan, but it’s going to be close.
You can also watch the results at the Elections Canada site.
Soccermom, it looks like there’s more Pirates in Winnipeg North than Commies….never would have guessed that.
Two out of three ain’t bad.
Looks like the communists are still big in Winnipeg!
Arrrr…the Pirates be running neck to neck with the scurvy dog Greenies.
The NDP is hardly walking away with it in the Peg though. They could still lose it.
Winnipeg North: 51,198 registered voters
Dauphin, Swan River, Marquette: 53,549 registered voters
Vaughn: 120,864 registered voters
This country needs some serious redistricting.
Yes! Go Pirate Party!
Actually, I think the headline is wrong. It is old Ma May that is in heat. She is in heat and lusting for power to the point that she will manipulate even her own party rules to stay in power. She smells like the sh*thouse door on a fishing boat she is so corrupt.
Everyone knows that it is a lack of Pirates that is causing Global Warming.
WWFSMD?
Yar maties … thar be monsters!
Chris there are more “pirates” today than ever before 😉
The Flying Spaghetti Monster is dead. The Flying Spaghetti Monster Remains dead. And we have killed him.
Lloyd and Fife (CTV Newsnet) were just on air lamenting the likely Conservative victory in Vaughan. Lloyd says ,however there is some “good news”,the Liberals may win in Winnipeg. Nope,no bias there. I wonder if
Lloyd is thinking that one day he may replace Mansbridge.
Wow, just over a 1% lead in both contested ridings. Unreal, lol.
Why are the polls so slow in Vaughn?
Looks like Fantino is crossing the finish line. Leading by about 885 votes with only 8 of 284 polls unreported.
Dispatch the grief counselors to the MSM editorial offices.
And look how Liberals supporters like WK are saying that the Tories almost blew their “safe” seat in Vaughn (talk about lowering the bar to ground level) while the Winnipeg North seat was an impressive win.
What is more pronounced – did the win in Winnipeg North help the Liberals more than losing Vaugn hurt?
Pretty good showing for Julian Fantino considering he limped across the finish line first with MSM arrows sticking to every available square inch of him. Sort of a cliffhanger Rob Ford rerun.
Toronto outer ring ridings are often fairly pragmatic when a candidate has a fairly good chance of winding up with a place at the cabinet table.
At the CBC site, two out of three ridings go to the Tories and the headline is “Liberals win one”.
The CEEB, hard at work. Sickening.
Let’s see now..
Justin Trudeau, SOT, appears in Toronto, hundreds of kilometres from his home riding, to campaign in a municipal election on behalf of avid pianist George Smitherman.
Smitherman loses.
Justin Trudeau, who inherited his father’s arrogance, and his mother’s looks and intelligence, appears in Vaughan, hundreds of kilometres from his home riding, to campaign on behalf of unknown Liberal candidate Tony Genco.
Genco loses.
Why does this make me happy?
Stephen at 9:36 PM: “Ladies and gentleman, meet the next leader of the opposition Jack Layton.”
That’s a scary prospect, scary enough perhaps to propel the Cons into majority territory? Fingers crossed.
Soccermom at 9:40 PM: “ooooh, there’s a Pirate Party candidate in Winnipeg North!”
That’s almost as good as the Rhinocerous Party. They should do well.
So three full sets of results. Just north of 68,000 votes cast and the Green Party garnered a total of 1310 votes……..
This a relevant party how?
And just remember, next time you see a Toronto Star: the bit of the heartland where they built their printing plant went blue last night.
Sorry I can’t support Fantino, and if Harper appoints him a ministerial position I won’t vote Conservative for two decades.
Rose, we’ll assume that your opinion is based on his Caledonia performance. I’m wondering where the ‘law and order’ Fantino of Toronto went also. However, I’m holding out hope that Fantino will now speak out about Mcguinty politics in the handling of Caledonia and the lack of police protection fo ‘helpless’ citizens.
Hardly worth letting Libbers get ‘power’ again, when it was a Liberal Ontario government and lazy Lib-loving media at fault in that situation.
Remember the Liebral government sent in David Peterson to rectify the situation in Caledonia and he did nothing. Fantinos orders came down from Queens Park there is no question about that.
Personally, I am willing to give Fantino some slack in regard to the Caledonia debacle.
His test will come with any renewed “long gun Registry” debate with the feds.
Liberal McGuinty after all, wears Caledonia and the HST on the necessities of everyday living, such as electricity and heating fuels and coffee and donuts at Timmy’s.
Gwallis, Joe – others you ever have your mother ask you (way back )something similar to “if all the other kids are going to play out on a busy highway are you?”
The stink is all the same McGuinty or Fantino I’ll give the lower ranks alittle slack but not the leaders, they should be above “selling their mother’s for a wooden nickle”
I’ve met you Joe and I don’t mean any disrespect but shouldn’t a man of Fantino’s age and experience have the ability to speak out, when the average citizens are left in the dust of political insanity. And he gets slack? Come on that could have been you and your home, and if Fantino can stomach what happened in Caledonia he won’t lose any sleep over a few legally owned tools that go bang getting loaded into cop cars, even if he can’t will it be because he hunted with his dad etc, or he wants to buy favor and somehow make amends for the people and principles of law he helped leave out to rot in purgatory.
McGuinty will probably get his politically, but it seems Fantino is getting away with it.
I hope I’m not straying to far from the topic but stuff like this is why we have Caledonia s in the first place. Men with honorable titles doing nothing of the sort and getting rewarded.
Somewhere between Toronto (where he was a damned good cop) and Caledonia, Fontino lost his balls.
Harper hand picked him as a candidate in the same way that other political leaders pick entertainers or sports celebrities, and then kept him out of site lest he say something.
As far as this old Reformer is concerned, the CPC has become a very smelly turd that offers no hope to ordinary citizens.
fantino.
In my view, Fantino is a politician first. Canada is worse off for having him in Parliament. We’d be even worse off if Genco had won.
Fantino is a yes man. Should be a perfect fit.
Lock-tossing Justin Turdoh seems to be the kiss of death for other liebral politicians. Perhaps that is why Ezra is talking about “chipping in” once he declares for the lib leadership.

Caledonia: McSquinty may have been giving the orders, but Fantino TOOK THEM. He didn’t have to, he could have walked. Anyone I’d want as a Conservative MP would have.
Perhaps that’s asking a lot, but given the power of government in this country that’s the safe minimum IMHO.
-Nobody- told him to go after Gary McHale personally. That was pure abuse of power, and that was all Fantino.
Its good a CPC guy won the seat. Its bad they shoehorned a ladder climber schmuck in there. Another massive, MASSIVE fail by the Canadian MSM.
The Phantom @ 9:49, yes!
The new Senate numbers and extra MP seat should help a little.
The phrase “The minority made me do it” is getting a little thin. Soon time to fish or cut bait.
Phantom I agree totally. Fantino had some cojones in his younger days but quickly turned into a typical civil servant and finally a political (small dead) animal. He was decent while in London, ON but got his dork whacked for a profiling comment and then started to slide badly in TO. The OPP thing with respect to Caledonia was just embarrassing and he should have been a lame duck after that. Better the devil you know? I hope he’s kept on the back bench.
Fantino is exhibit XXVI that the CPC has not a shred of decency or principle. At this point, I don’t believe conservatives by and large have any either. His election is the worst case scenario. The fact that Harper considers him his ‘law and order’ guy is beyond the looking glass. They haven’t done anything to earn it, but I many vote Liberal just to help stave off a Harper Majority. With Fantino likely to be put in a cabinet position, it looks like the left-wing warnings about Harper being police-state pol were actually correct.
If the Liberals can’t take advantage of the huge liability Fantino is to the CPC, then I don’t know what to say.
fakelibertarian said: “If the Liberals can’t take advantage of the huge liability Fantino is to the CPC, then I don’t know what to say.”
That might be kinda hard, given that Fantino was following -Liberal- illegal orders and implementing -Liberal- policy. The most the Liberals can hope for is that Fantino keeps his closet shut and doesn’t drag all the skeletons out at an unfortunate moment.
Are you naturally this much a doof or do you practice?
