It seems that New York is taking a cue from Manitoba: let’s make up phony reasons to reject private sector investment. God forbid that industrial infrastructure should use energy….
Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Tuesday imposing the country’s first statewide moratorium on hyperscale data centers, which house thousands of computer servers and require massive amounts of energy and a steady supply of water to keep cool.

They want you poor and unemployed because dependency is the Socialist currency.
She’s just taking a cue from AOC who ran Amazon and 25,000 jobs out of NYC.

Now tell me the Democrat Socialists aren’t taking over the party.
Data centers only create a fraction of the jobs of an Amazon fulfillment center. Temporary construction jobs are created but after that it is only a few dozen. In the long term, the suck a lot of electricity and creates a lot of noise. Maybe stick them all in the desert or Greenland.
I don’t ever agree with Drmocrats, except on this.
well, admittedly lm kinda confoosed with the contradictory purposes; shut down A/Cs because hydro causes greed (note the spelling) house gases. buuuuuuuuuuuuut . . .
hokay to build monster hydro gluttons that once built, serve the crypto currency miners and zuck’s customer base. among other typical users.
(funny thing, drug addicts go by that term also, ‘user’.)
New York, IMO, seems to be taking their cues from Germany. NY has been active in phasing out their fossil fuel plants faster than any “alternative energy” process can make up the difference. Since 2019 they’ve lost 1.5 Gigawatts in energy reserves. Their electrical grid is horrendous. The state, itself, holds $1.3 Trillion in debt, so I don’t see them upgrading the grid in my lifetime.
The moratorium is for a single year. I don’t see what changes in a year other than making energy consumption more regulated via invasive rules, laws and edicts.
The data centers will have the last laugh when AI starts charging usage fees to recoup the cost of … data centers. Of course NY will charge a tax on AI usage in other states, but the lion’s share will still go out of state.
Even by the rock-bottom standards of a Democrat blue state, this order is bizarre. NY state is bleeding middle-class jobs, so the leadership blocks more additional investment.
The United States may be a great country, but most of the actual states suck.
We need more free helicopter rides.
Make right-wing death squads great again.
NY is racing toward a mega-implosion as it becomes an anti-matter black hole. Faster please.
Data centers and AI are pure evil: the surveillance tools of the panopticon. They have no humane use.
The internet works without them.
And with that comment, You win the interweb, Mr. Bentham
How’s the weather in Beijing, Comrade?
“…let’s make up phony reasons to reject private sector investment.”
The governor is literally working for the Chicoms at this point, and so is Manitoba. No one benefits from this except the Chinese AI effort.
Luckily I strongly believe AI as presently constituted is going to come to nothing, or very little. Certainly it’ll be a stretch to see them justifying these immense expenditures.
But that does not alter the fact that the Greenies are working directly for the Commies. We really need to fix that.
What a business case for data centers in Southern Ontario. They can use cooling water from the Canadian side of Lake Ontario without warming the water on the US side.
Win win
I’m of two minds here. I don’t think it’s wise to build hyper scale centres. They’ll just attract hyper scale beasts! Why are we spending good money on Godzilla bait? And yet, without data centers, where will the Brent Spiner Fan Club meet? I’ll want to ponder this. Or maybe I should change sex and transponder it…
