When I was in Winnipeg in early August, I dropped by the studio at CKNW CJOB to spent a few minutes with Charles Adler. The segment (with the Globe and Mail’s Dan Cook) concerned Quebec’s status as a special needs recipient under provincial equalization.
Charles offered that when we in the West criticize the arrangement, we get accused of “Quebec bashing”.
To which I replied, “So what?”.
Mainstream media – always stealing my best lines.
Entitlement mentalities always looks the other way when bribes, grafts and sleaze are just the way of doing business.
Let’s start with the Language Police!
Finally the truth comes out in a national media outlet. It just does not end in Quebec. If it is not brown cash filled bags, it is bought and paid for judges. Not to mention the company that supplies much of the Liberal leadership.
Separate already, please.
Of course Quebec is rife with scandal, and has an entitlement culture. And no, it is not a slam on their characters to say say. ANY province, or ANY group of people similarly entitled would develop the same problems.
The solution: Stop this entitlement culture. Stop it now. Quebec has all the people, resources, and expertise it needs. There is no way that they should be a “have not” province.

Quebec is just closer to the norm in the rest of the world. Most countries have evolved political systems with two parties, basically the “In’s” party and the “Out’s” party. The two contending groups usually differ on emphasis, one corrupt party placing more value on economic growth through pragmatism and private effort and the other more incompetent corrupt party dealing in socialism with a big slice of fanaticism.

Nope it’s not racist. Quebec is not a race it’s a culture, MacLean’s is saying that Quebec is the MOST corrupt and that where we need a fair and balanced argument. Because with Mayor Miller (who never saw a union contract he wouldn’t sign without a compete clause) and Ditto Dalton; Ontario deserves a chance for the Corruption Cup.
Furthermore in Ontario the big elephant in the room makes eHealth look like a mouse, it’s eEnergy. Ditto Dalton has set up Ontario Hydro boards with Liberal cronies and they are well on their way to driving Ontario business into the arms of Con Edison in Buffalo.

I disagree with Maclean’s. I think Toronto is the most corrupt Province in Canada — yes, I said “Province”. But “Nation/State” may be a more accurate description of Toronto since it has its own foreign policy separate from the Feds re: China, etc. (Psst..is that legal?)
Plus the Toronto municipal budget deficit is bigger than that of the entire Federal government, which is why Torontonians have been taxed to the point that a popular “Tea Party” has risen up and is booting out the corrupt Left in the upcoming municipal elections.

As grotesque as the level of corruption in Quebec is, it’s worth remembering that this sort of shady activity is not the biggest problem with Quebec in Canada.
It’s the official, government sanctioned formula for transfer payment calculations that is the most offensive. Calculating Quebec’s productivity while excluding most resource revenues–a luxury no other province receives–is basically organised theft.

I wasn’t on very long, nor was it very noteworthy. They only keep clips on line for a month, even if it was worth looking for.

I actually laughed out loud when I read Macleans’ two articles about Quebec corruption. It got even funnier when I read the comments. criticism of Quebec = racist. Race? Quebecers are just a bunch of French speaking Canadians clustered together in one province, not a race? I thought that after the Steyn/HRC drama Macleans wouldn’t have the confidence to publish controversial articles. Nice to see the crpytorchidism has been cured.
What is the big deal, anyway. The article openly talks about a topic that everyone outside of Quebec already suspects. The bigger problem, IMO, is that so many Quebecers are part of the federal bureaucracy. Their culture of corruption, via bilingual job requirements, now has preferential access to government jobs in Ottawa.

Althiough less than 25% of the population, quebec dairy farmers have about 40% of the Canadian milk quota.

in 1996 I tried to suggest that what needs to be done is hammer out an agreement with quebec that if they ever vote to separate they must also RATIFY the vote.
if the ratification passes the ROC is the first country to recognize their independence BUT if it fails ratification then STFU about separation referendums for the next 50 years.
I couldn’t get agreement from anyone on the simplest aspects of the idea. because it’s not the canadian way; the canadian way is to perpetually cater to the quebec whiners who, amazing as it seems, do NOT want independence. they just want all the bribe and guilt billions to keep coming in.

Of course Quebec is not peopled with people from France – it is peopled with people who speak French. Just a cursory review of world history would poke a thousand holes in that stupid statement from the Bolshevik wanna be dictator of Canada – the vile Ducippe. Quebec was abandoned by France during the French Revolution (1789-99); the Frenchmen were busy lopping off the heads of state and the state fell into a series of failed Republic type set ups under various Dictators. When Napoleon rode out of Italy to ‘rescue’ France, he took all would be settlers of Quebec into the army and rampaged around until the English defeated that ‘hero’ at Waterloo (1815.
France had already sold it’s most valuable piece of property (Louisiana) to USA in 1803. The takeover of Quebec by the British was not an issue to Napoleon – he had his sites set on Europe first, the world later. Quebec was not a big deal for the British either, the British were worried about the pesky Tea Partiers in Boston extending their power to the other colonies.
France was defeated in 1815, they retreated home to lick their wounds. Britain was concerned with the Suez Canal and the passage to India and other more valuable colonies in the East Indies. Ireland, during the years 1845 – 1852 was starving – a potato blight aided by an indifferent (even encouraged) British government; shipped their people overseas to settle the colonies across the ocean. Irish people were Catholic people – when these souls landed in Canada they could chose to live in Quebec where the hurried British had offered the conquered settlers the right to retain their language and religion – the French people, living in Quebec were subjects of French Kings who ruled by Divine Right via the Pope – they were Catholics! Britain was ruled by Kings who were head of the National Church of England – Anglican. The Catholic Irish chose to learn French and live in Quebec. The Irish hated the British (with just cause, IMO) at the time and they could poke the British overlords in Canada in the eye via learning French (not too difficult since Old French is very similar to Gaelic)! Back in the late 1800’s I would have cheered for Quebec but the poke in the eye is now aimed at people who have no relation to the British overlords (I, too am a Celt, from Western Canada ; my ancestors came here during the Highland Closures – there are thousands of other Canadian citizens who are as Celtic as the Quebec people).
Quebec has evolved into a mass of misinformed citizens who wish us to believe that they are ‘special’ because they speak French. It is time to stop thinking that people in Quebec are ‘special’, they are just like any other Celt (or any other nationality) and that province is infiltrated with Communists. If the children of the Irish and Scots who live in Quebec wish to be on the side of the self proclaimed Communists in the Bloc, then they should form their own country. Torrana could leave with them. The Dippers and the Liberanos who wish to be in a Troika, with a Blochead calling the shots, could chose to live with their own ilk, in independant Quebec. No Canadian, in His/her right mind, would ‘bloc’ such a move – the question ‘Would Quebec be missed if it was a foreign, independant country’? ‘ should be asked and answered by every Canadian citizen, IMO.
I have a hard time with that headline. Stats Can has always shown Quebec and Ontario neck and neck as the lowest crime rates in Canada. Saskatchewan % is almost twice that!! Somebody must’ve shoved a brown enveloppe under the right door.

Silent Sam, it’s not the crime rate, it’s the whole “culture of corruption,” which Justice Gomery used to describe the LPC and which could equally well describe the way things are done in Quebec. The French have never had qualms about doing things under the table or not by the book which is one reason, I suspect, why the Brits and the French have never got along.
Until recently, until the wheels completely fell off the British way of doing things, the Brits were sticklers for law and order and doing things according to Hoyle, whereas the French liked their wine, women, and brown paper bags stuffed with cash — and to hell with law and order.
