  1. Wow, a Lefty who finally figured out where all the cap n’trady tax money goodness is going to actually end up.
I say wow because I’m surprised to find a Lefty who can add and subtract, multiply and divide numbers all by himself. Its like a small, tiny miracle.

  2. If humans want to survive as species, they need to burn coal at the rates unheard of before. That’s all I care about. Screw nuclear power, screw hydro, wind and tide. We need to return all that CO2 into the atmosphere that the stupid plants deposited into the ground and look at the results!

  3. The late George Carlin said it best….
“Pack you bags…cause you are going away!
    “The earth will be fine.”
“The earth is not doomed by a bit of plastic.
Maybe the earth wants plastic…after all it is really one of it’s children. Perhaps that’s why we are here…plastic…”

  4. Rancourt’s views almost exactly parallel those of a longtime committed environmental activist I met at a party six years ago when I was visiting some friends in Vancouver. His assertion – and he was quite convincing – is that there are serious environmental problems around the world (gross deforestations leading to calamitous erosion and destruction of habitat, poisonous, grossly harmful in the long-term pollutants being dumped into the water and the soil, particularly in Eastern Europe, Russia, and China, etc) but that the vast majority of people who would otherwise be active advocates to solve for these real-world problems have had their energies misdirected into a worldwide monetary redistribution plan based entirely on leftist politics, based on academic/political funding, that have nothing to do with actual science.
On a related note, a couple-four years ago I heard an ex-girlfriend of an old friend of mine, now an AGW-promoting woman in Edmonton who is – seriously – a dolt and a major, serious airhead, being interviewed on CBC radio as some sort of authority on the matter of AGW. I was blown away: she has always been, to anyone who has ever met her – I’m sorry, but it’s true – a seriously dumb, angry, purely emotional, defensive and *profoundly* illogical person, pretty much incapable of reason; I was stunned that she might appear on our taxpayer-funded network as some sort of authoritative voice on the “science” of Global Warming. Truly – *truly* – a joke, but she perfectly exemplifies the ilk who deign to “save the planet” in a desperate attempt to rectify their own profound shortcomings. Unless you knew her personally, though, you’d just hear confirmation that….
    *Ughh*.

  5. This Lefty environmentalist(redundant)is bailing now because the Irritable Climate Syndrome horse that he and his ilk has been happy to ride these many years is dying under him.
If COP 15 last year hadn’t been such a failure and we hadn’t gotten East Anglia’s CRU releases we wouldn’t be hearing him sing this tune now.
The Left and all their machinations must be rooted out.
The environmentalists haven’t highjacked the environmentalist movement.
    Conservation NOT Environmentalism.

  6. All those on either side of the irritable climate debate could stand a little humbility and revel in the ability of the earth and the universe to make our piddly little disagreements most inconsequential.
The chutzpah of the man-made global warming fanatics is galling from both sides; that we actually make an impact on where the climate is going and that we can reverse that impact by recycling newspaper and plastic bottles fer chrissakes.

  7. Smug toxicity. This leftard is only POed that nhe hasn’t the money and influence of the warmists. He wants to usher in green fascism as badly as the AGW hysterics. Same crap in a different pile.

  8. “The chutzpah of the man-made global warming fanatics is galling from both sides”
    I think you’re confused Pedro.
The skeptic side has “fanatical galling chutzpah” for pointing out that AGM has no evidence to support it except for the lies of it’s proponents?
Both sides are to blame because one side refuses to drink the Koolaid?
    What are you talking about?

  9. What is interesting is that scientists only feel comfortable being an AGW skeptic publicly after retirement. Obviously, tenure alone will not protect scientists from retaliation.

  10. In my view, one of our great failings was to allow urbanites from places like the Tee-Dot, NYC, LA to convince us that they are environmental and their rural counterparts are somehow un-environmental.
Sheer stupidity. We must learn how to manage the dialog!!

  11. Whatever the motives are for speaking the truth at this point, Denis Rancourt is speaking the truth.
Perhaps Rancourt could not stand the site of the Premier of Quebec standing shoulder to shoulder with with George Soros?
[Moments later, as Quebec Premier Jean Charest’s began his remarks from the stage, a phone rang behind him. “I think it’s me,” George Soros, the billionaire financier and philanthropist and fellow panelist, said as he fumbled in his pocket and pulled out the offending phone.] Financial Post

  12. When it doesn’t even fall into the category of fuzzy logic, pretty hard to explain the unexplainable so time to start backtracking, jumping ship.

  13. Rancourt has been speaking out for a long time now – some very good info about him over in the comments at WUWT. It’s very interesting to see the CAGW alarmists theories and motives attacked from a leftist perspective. Whilst my enemies enemy may not be my friend he is still their enemy and I may learn from him.

  14. “Whilst my enemies enemy may not be my friend he is still their enemy and I may learn from him.”
    ~Shannon MacAulay
He sounds like Ezra Levant when it comes to the ethics of environmental CO2.
Ezra is trustworthy, Rancourt…not so much, particularly the statement about “highjacking”.
That doesn’t show that Rancourt is an enemy of environmentalists, it shows he is an apologist.
His goals are the same as their’s, he just disagrees with their AGW strategy.
Up until AGW, Leftist’s main focus had been the shutting down the construction of new power generation facilities with “habitat” impact studies.
The CO2 strategy isn’t going to work to continue that goal.
Rancourt wants to go back to the “habitat” strategy as a focus to achieve the same goal.
Leftists, whose world view consist of stealing the fruits of someone’s labour and conferring them on someone else, are fundamentally immoral.

  15. Scratch any dedicated greenie and you find a fascist:
    http://tinyurl.com/2wk39cg
“A Finnish environmentalist guru has gone further than any other global warming alarmist in openly calling for fascism as a necessary step to save the planet from ecological destruction, demanding that climate change deniers be “re-educated” in eco-gulags and that the vast majority of humans be killed with the rest enslaved and controlled by a green police state, with people forcibly sterilized, cars confiscated and travel restricted to members of the elite.
Philosopher Pentti Linkola has built an enthusiastic following of self-described “eco-fascists” receptive to his message that the state should enact draconian measures of “discipline, prohibition, enforcement and oppression” in order to make people comply with environmental dictates.
Linkola’s barbaric and dictatorial philosophy has remained relatively obscure but is now gaining traction as the mask of environmentalism is lifted to unveil its true nature – a justification for 21st century tyranny on a grand scale, characterized by eugenics, sterilization, gulags, police states, and total government control over every aspect of our existence.”

  16. Rancour appears to be quite an original thinker and is more of an anarchist than a leftist (if one must use labels). I spent a couple of hours last night poking through his writings and he’s written some devastating critiques of AGW. 35 years ago I would have agreed with most of what he had to say (my anarchist phase). His analysis of corporate/government power structures is quite interesting and attempting to dismiss him by using the “leftist” label is analogous to the obamacrats use of “racist” to describe anything that doesn’t fit into their narrow weltanschauung.
He’s one of the rare professors with tenure dimissed from a University and it sounds like he really pissed off Stalin Rock. Anyone who’s an enemy of Stalin Rock is likely a friend.

  17. Ezra should hook up with this guy. No doubt sparks would fly over politics but the Ethical issues they seem to agree on. The real environmentalist made a heep of sense.
Sounds like he not a drone like most. Thankfully those who actually want the truth are waking up to the Money worms in their separate apples.

  18. Sorry-
    Global warming, uh..er.. ‘disturbances’ humor.
Vice President Joe Biden has submitted his plan to stop Global Warming Disturbances.
He says that if we need to, we can lower the temperature dramatically just by switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

Climate experts say we should tell villagers in developing countries to reduce the amount of cooking smoke they generate to help fix global warming disturbances.
“You know, it’s as if these people don’t hate us enough already. I mean, they live in mud huts, they have thatch roofs, their clothes are made of straw.
We pull up in a bunch of Humvees and SUVs going,
‘Hey, you want to cut the smoke out of here?”

  19. Good post, loki. Thanks for going to the trouble of looking up his history. It is always good to see an academic break free of the conformity of opinion (the narrow band between solid left to hard left) that infects universities.

  20. WAG Report: Holy polar cow.
“Miss Lloyd was unavailable for comment last night.”
    …-
“ITV embarrassed by report of polar bear washed up on beach”
“When reports came in that a polar bear had washed up on a Cornish beach, television presenter Naomi Lloyd was first with the news.”
The presenter of ITV’s West Country breakfast bulletin informed astonished viewers that an animal more commonly spotted near the North Pole had turned up in the seaside town of Bude. Video footage showed a large, white beast lying on the shore.
“A walker in Cornwall has caught an extraordinary sight on camera. A polar bear has washed up on a beach near Bude,” an excited Miss Lloyd said. “The bear comes from the Arctic Circle and an investigation is under way as to how it could have ended up there.”
Alas for Miss Lloyd, the tale of the Cornish polar bear turned out to be several thousand miles wide of the mark.
Closer inspection revealed that the polar bear was, in fact, a cow. The farm animal had been bleached white by sea water.”

  21. Frustrated more than ever, George S. and Maurice S. (The S.S.?) are now seriously contemplating their own “final solution” to bring a new world socialist order:
Shutdown the internet worldwide and use Y2K type fear mongering stories like “bank accounts and/or misc financial transactions are at risk” etc…Barry the puppet has got the finger on the switch awaiting the go ahead.
It’s coming in one form or another soon.

  22. What you notice, reading Rancourt’s blog, is that he loathes Liberals, calls them ‘elitists’, and blames them for usurping ‘honest activism’ with this AGW ‘nonsense’. So branding him a ‘Liberal environmentalist’ is a misnomer.
His political affiliation would be more akin to the Rabble.ca crowd, IMO.

  23. “Rancour appears to be quite an original thinker and is more of an anarchist than a leftist (if one must use labels).”

“A revolution is impossible without a revolutionary situation; furthermore, not every revolutionary situation leads to revolution.”
    ~Vladimir Lenin
Anarchist ideas and Communism are not exclusive when viewed through the lense of history.
Anarchy is merely a phase necessary to arrive at a “revolutionary situation”.
Power abhors a vacuum, a state of anarchy is transitional only.
Anarchy is how Lenin, Hitler, and many other Leftists gained power.

  24. Oz: Anarchy is how Lenin, Hitler, and many other Leftists gained power.
What results following an anarchic situation depends very much on what the populace was used to previously. One primary reason that Lenin and Hitler gained power so easily is that the Russian population was used to being dominated by a monarch and the German population saw a dictatorship as natural (learning some very interesting things about late 1800’s Germany from currently reading Hayak’s The Road to Serfdom.
If a situation of anarchy developed in the US, what I suspect would happen would be a return to US constitutional ideals as this is what the majority of the population sees as the basis of the state. That’s why the Tea Party is so strong in the US. I’m not sure about Canada as this country seems to have a much higher level of blind obedience to authority and the US border has served as a convenient statist safety valve letting out the more freedom minded.
What is important is to try to keep the proportion of the population dependent on the state to as small a number as possible so as to prevent the rise of a totalitarian state should something cause massive social disruption. BTW, I finally concluded that Anarchism is intrinsically unstable and evolved into a Libertarian.

  25. Loki, that was a great thought to look into Rancourt’s writings. He may not be a AGW supporter and may loath elitists, but I suspect that if he has anarchist leanings he is not right of center and possibly would support the radical left if push came to shove.
The Bolsheviks used the Makhnovist anarchists to help them win the Russian Civil War and then promptly turned on them. Oz’s Lenin quote was bang on. That is why he was so desperate to get back to Russia after the March revolution and use the revolution to his advantage.
To be honest though, there are days, when I think of the increasing government control of our daily lives, I think Nestor Makhno, Michael Malet, et al may of had something there. Even though one of Makhno’s lieutenants shot and wounded my wife’s gpa and another lieutenant on another occasion was going to, but changed his mind when he discovered that my wife’s gpa was “good” employer and not an exploiter.

  26. Loki, Canada was set up by a cabal of lawyers with an eye for the main chance. Canadians are much more concerned about not rocking the boat or making a scene than they are about their own freedoms. No reason to think it would be any different next time out, after a brief period of anarchy.
Anarchy in Canada would be characterized by people refusing to line up in an orderly fashion for their handouts. Possibly there could even be que jumping!

  27. Why all this $h1t about Rancourt’s leftist proclivities? One of the worst things that has come out of the AGW debate is the politicization of science.
We get our undies in a knot when the warmists, instead of trying to offer rational arguments, attack us as right wing fanatics and call us deniers. The personal shots on this thread against Rancourt come out of a different compartment in the same septic tank.

  28. Supplementary thoughts to above post just in case some may think I’ve slipped a cog. The lure of anarchism in my mind is fleeting though, as anarchism can never be a viable situation in any situation. Libertarianism is a much healthier state to pursue. Liberty, not chaos.

  29. Rancourt has simply repeated what many including Preston Manning recognized years ago i.e. that “environmentalism” is only peripherally concerned about the environment and only insofar as it offers a back door to advance left-wing political agendas. Cap and Trade is a classic example. If you risk giving the game away by overtly trying to control production, you can do the next best thing by controlling the by-products of production i.e. CO2 and waste products. Thus the leftist enthusiasm for Cap and Trade. The environment itself be damned. The most heavily polluting countries in the world were, and are those with the greatest degree of central government control over their economies. Environmentalists never raised a peep about them.
To his credit, Rancourt seems to be genuinely concerned about environmental degradation as well as raising the standard of living of the people of the developing world however flawed may be his economic model for doing so. Thus he is drawing the conclusion, pointed out in the past by several commenters on this blog that the hysteria over AGW and the proposed “solutions” for this non-existent problem both misdirect resources (political, financial and material) away from solving real environmental problems, and at the same time attempt to impose constraints on the development and alleviation of poverty of the poorest and most vulnerable people on the planet. Modern environmentalism is both mis-directed and savage.

This professor may be your friend, he definitely is not mine, even if he has the same view on AGW. He is so far left that it makes me dizzy.
Canadian crimes include, a continuing genocide against aboriginal peoples [13], a geopolitical war in Afghanistan, support for the US Empire, support for the genocidal and apartheid state policies of Israel, overturning the democratic popular government in Haiti, corporate and finance predation throughout the world, an immoral prison system used to maintain social inequities [14], vast structural social inequities with mass public health consequences, mass civil rights violations perpetrated at will and without consequences for the decision makers (e.g., G20-Toronto), mass indoctrination and pacification of the youth, continual social engineering manipulation, universal pharmaceutical and medical establishment predation……

  31. You’ve already posted this a while back Kate…and it’s still garbage. The video of the interview doesn’t show the questions being asked, just edited clips of answers…a classic method of distortion and illusion.
    Be better.

  32. ella, I’ve never met Rancourt but I suspect that it would be interesting debating politics with him in a bar some evening. Yes, the guy has some wacky ideas — so does everyone. Life would be rather boring if we all thought the same way. I find statist politicians far scarier.
The reason that I found his site interesting is that his writings are far from the standard leftist propaganda that one finds at warmist sites. The guy tends to take scientific evidence into consideration. As I look further into what is driving the AGW agenda, it looks like there are some very powerful forces involved and we’re going to need all the allies we can find in this fight. There’ll be lots of time after the statists are defeated to argue over trivialities such as “the genocide against indigenous peoples”.
Ken (Kulak): Russian anarchists were useful idiots for Lenin and probably would have been eliminated by whatever side had won the war. What I’ve found reading the anarchist literature is that, well, the whole field is somewhat anarchic. There seems to be little real difference whether one calls oneself an “individualist anarchist” or a “libertarian” and one of the reasons I switched to describing myself as Libertarian is that it saves me having to explain to people about the bewildering variety of Anarchists that exist.
I think a better way of looking at things is in whether one believes in generation of spontaneous order or all order imposed from above. I’m a strong proponent of self-organizing systems with the absolute minimum of hierarchical organization needed to perform a particular task.

  33. Anarchy in Canada would be characterized by people refusing to line up in an orderly fashion for their handouts. Possibly there could even be que jumping!

    Too true lol lol lol

  34. Loki, as you may have surmised from my posts above and from previous posts. Many members of both my wife’s and my family have experience of living under a government that regulates every moment of your life and in my view that is what is happening here, but is being implemented slower bit by bit.
You are right, they were useful idiots for Lenin. The Russian anarchists would have been eliminated no matter who won the civil war. The anarchists in Russia, on occasion, when it suited them, fought with the Bolsheviks or against them, but never with the Whites.
This leads to a two part question. Why do anarchists always support the left if they do not like a controlling central state apparatus. What then is a libertarian who never supports leftist statism.

  35. Anarchy in Canada? Que Jumping… Of course not, havent you heard of the Holy, Spiritual HOV lane??? Gasp!!!!

  36. BTJ; Please do not take one short video out of the myriads of threads develop for the usual visitors to have an opportunity to be sheltered on this site from the bombast of misinformation.
Be respectful of your betters; Cheers

Most excellent observation, put so succinctly, it should qualify for some kind of literary prize.
While the above statement is true, don’t get impressed with yourself.

  38. Hey Phantom, comment #1: You speak of a small tiny miracle.
Could you give us an example of a big tiny miracle?

  39. “climate change deniers be “re-educated””
Sounds like thats in your future, first it was global freezing, then global warming. Now its what ever the new one world government tells you it is.
