  3. outside of Lund at the ‘beginning of the road’ on the Sunshine Coast there’s an inexplicably cordon bleu restaurant called the Laughing Oyster…it’s amazing really….being it’s stuck in the woods after 2 miles of back road…
    anyway whenever i steered my good ship the Parsnip into Lund to refuel i’d always make it to the Oyster…
    and mirabile dictu serving tables in that Oyster was a winner of the star texaco opera thingummy in winnipeg..(her father owned the shop)
    i’d always ask her to sing for me after i was outside a good meal and a bottle of wine..
    she would warm up while carrying on her duties then come back and lay a few trills and so on from whatever she was working on as a singer..
    it never failed that having that voice and her sincerity and feeling and the proximity would have the tears coursing down from my peepers…
    what a tipper i was after being softened up so exquisitely..

    I am delighted you discovered her. I have been watching her progress on Youtube for a couple of months now. The fact that a voice like that comes out of a ten year old is truly astonishing.
    If you have a chance, check out her initial audition…it literally blew everyone in the audience away…

  5. No words suffice to describe that child’s rich voice and mature poise, but the first time I heard her I thought, “otherworldly.”
    She’s an instrument.

  7. Wow! Who’s this girl channeling? It’s an adult voice coming out of a child. I don’t like in any way to be a cynic, but have they checked her out for wiring?

  8. john begley, you have to be the most interesting character posting here … or a fictional character? Either way, I enjoy your imaginative posts, lower case notwithstanding. I shall check out that restaurant in Lund (I rode there last summer after crossing by ferry to Powell River).
    I watched this with initial trepidation fearing some kinda pop slush treacle. WOW. That is a seriously strong and disturbingly mature voice for such a youngster, and the performance is high art in my judgment. Lets hope the bad taste money meisters don’t ruin it too soon.

    imagine mesself being insulted and my ongoing struggle to force doctor dawg into a mental breakdown as being something undesirable…

  11. john begley…..would that be soprano Jessica Bowes, by chance? ‘Lots of musical talent here in Powell River/Lund, and yes, the Laughing Oyster is worth the trip. But as far as the politics are concerned around here, you’d best keep the dinner conversation away from anything right-leaning.

  14. She is unique and deserving of recognition. So poised and talented for one so young.
    I heard that Susan Boyle was asked to appear on America’s Got Talent last week. She arrived but the song writer of the song they had asked her to sing ‘did not approve of Susan Boyle singing HIS song’ and created a big stir. Susan Boyle left in tears. Left not only the show but LA and flew back to England. What? Could the producers have not done better by the woman?
    I know it sounds like Susan Boyle is fragile and emotional. Perhaps that impression is correct.
    However, so is a ten year old child.
    I would like to think that the producers of the show have a better spine the next time they have to make a decision that may adversely affect one of their performers. That said, talent the child does have and hopefully a healthy psyche.

  16. Very impressive. She can obviously sing, and the music is lovely, and well arranged.
    I’d much rather listen to this than anything Lou Reed has ever been involved with.

    Now why can’t we see true talent like that at awards shows such as the Grammys, rather than the usual gender jumbled trollops that take the stage.

  20. Incredible! I watched all the utube video I could find. About half way through I began to believe it. May God bless and protect this wonderful little girl.
    john begly: don’t you let lizzy scare you off normal and healthy dinner conversation at the Laughing Oyster. Sure there are lots of leftards out this way and David (the chef) might even be one of them but he won’t poison you. Len Emmonds (chair of the regional board for 13 years and the only truly honest politician I ever knew)was as hard right a politician as ever you could meet this side of Texas. He always spoke his mind at the Oyster and was always treated with the respect he deserved. 17 years on the board. There must be a few rednecks out this way. Even some of the artsy people out here are smart enough to know sense from pie in the sky.

    ‘Maybe because she sings RELIGIOUS songs?: Pie Jesus, Ave Maria, etc. The Entertainment Industry runs from the Christian religion the way a vampire recoils from garlic.

  23. Piers Morgan said it best. In his 5 years doing the show, both in England and US, he has never seen anyone with this amount of raw talent.
    She is amazing and we will be listening to her well beyond my time.

I don’t mean to be the one person to put a damper on the recognition this incredibly talented young girl is getting via America’s Go Talen, but there’s something unnerving — and, for me, not particularly attractive — about a beautiful young girl with an amazing voice singing songs with lyrics which are way beyond her experience. Maybe it’s seeing young girls growing up way too fast in our society which has me troubled.
    Here’s what someone commented on a YouTube performance Jackie Evancho gave at seven years old, which sort of sums up my feelings:
    Beautiful innocent babe…go all the way. You have the voice of God. May he watch over and guide you in your endeavors. Please do not fall into the “trap” of hollywood beautiful baby…reach beyond….your talent is unbridled. Stay true to yourself and give the beautiful gift of your voice to the world. Your voice makes me cry because of your talent, innocence and beauty. Do not let Hollywood taint you…America loves you as you are!

    ‘the architect who etc.’..that’s a line from joshua slocum’s famous 19th century book of his voyage….it was a schoolbook in the states for 40 years !
    and slocum was born a blue noser…
    anyway it’s an eminently readable and worthwhile and instructive volume…

  27. Yeah, john begley, joshua slocum was a bluenoser and spent most of his childhood on Brier Island, a very picturesque island off the Digby Spit in Nova Scotia.
    Years ago, I spent a summer nearby and always loved taking the small ferry over to the island. It was like stepping back in time.

  28. The Laughing Oyster is a fine place to eat, no doubt. Powell River is blessed with a few good eateries and really no bad ones. As far as the left leaning stuff goes, depends on who is there.
    I too call River City home.

  30. Sounds very nice but looks like a matter of lip-sync to me, and her timing is off. Mind you, all I watched was this one video.

  31. Watched another vid. Her speaking voice doesn’t sound like her singing voice at all. And lip-sync timing was way off on that one too.

    So what are you implying? That on a remote forum in cyberspace, she has been outed? Please.
    Singing is much more than just opening your mouth to let words spill out. It’s a skill and what some can do with their breath is incredible.
    Anyhow…check out the video of her @ 9 singing the National Anthem for the Pirates opener. Man, why can’t people just enjoy. Look…the grassy knoll.
