Residents of the prairie provinces, where temperatures have been pretty much autumnal for over a month now, may feel a need to pretend that summer isn’t over yet. Maybe this will help: here’s Andy Williams‘ 1962 recording of A Summer Place.

I was just a teenager when this was on the airwaves. It filled me with romantic longing, long before I knew any boys other than the clowns and nerds in my grade nine class.

America, arrest and silence your priests:
Fresh violence erupted in Kashmir on Monday leaving 18 dead including a policeman and over 80 injured with mobs torching several government properties and a private school, some of the trouble triggered by a television report alleging desecration of the Quran in the United States.”

“An unruly mob set on fire another Christian missionary school in Pulwama town in south Kashmir on Monday evening…”
I LOVE this song. So many memories … and I THINK they’re all about summer … thanks, EBD.
The potted plants on my deck are valiantly maintaining their summer splendour, though it’s obviously a struggle.
Winter’s own beauty is approaching …
Bobblehead era
Learned a new word this week: “bobbleheads.” More precisely, I learned a new metaphor, having heard the word itself long before, applied to those silly little dolls, with large heads, that bob up and down, because connected by springs to their small bodies. They are also known as “wobblers,” I believe.

Some Snow Later This Weekend?
Brett Anderson from AccuWeather.com forecast for this weekend.
I have been very impressed by the look of the next surge of cold air up across the far north. This air mass is truly Arctic in nature and will spread southward through central Canada during the middle of next week. Average temperatures from Thursday night through Friday across the western Prairies could be as much as 10 degrees celsius (18 F) below normal!

“The Deadly War against DDT
In its two decades of widespread use, DDT saved more lives than any other man-made chemical.
A remarkable new documentary tells the story of how political and ideological forces combined to ban a widely and safely used chemical, DDT, leading to a surge of malaria deaths in developing countries like Kenya, Indonesia, and India.
3 Billion and Counting, which premieres this Friday in Manhattan, was produced by Dr. Rutledge Taylor, a California physician who specializes in preventive medicine. His film will both shock and anger you.”
“Two months later, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, William Ruckelshaus — who had never attended a single day’s session of the EPA’s hearings and admitted that he had not read the transcripts — overturned the judge’s decision, declaring, without evidence, that DDT was “a potential human carcinogen” and banned it for virtually all uses. The ban on DDT was considered to be the first major victory for the environmentalist movement in the United States, and countries around the world followed America’s lead.”

Whats with Teneyck resigning?!?
I thought he was doing an amazing job of shepherding SunTV thru the hoops!
Kory Teneycke has resigned from Quebecor Media.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/09/15/kory-teneycke-sun-tv-quebecor.html?ref=rss#ixzz0zcazTo9D
“In a statement on Wednesday, Ricken Patel, avaaz.org’s executive director and co-founder, called Teneycke’s resignation ‘a battle won in a longer fight against crony-media in Canada.'”
CRONY-MEDIA??? The CBC and most of the Canadian print media are the crony-media par excellence, cronies of the Liberal Party of Canada and any party that isn’t c/Conservative.
Teneycke’s resignation is probably a good thing, because of the perception of government interference, but the Avaaz petition absolutely stinks. These leftards have blinkers on; all they need to do to see what crony-media really looks like is hold a mirror up to themselves.
Any journalist who lauds Avaaz.com for interfering with SunTV’s attempts to get a license for their channel has no genuine concern for Canadians’ Charter Rights. The only “rights” that matter to them are rights for those with whom they agree, which amounts to a leftist monopoly on the media.
The True North Strong and Free. Yeah, right. How about The True North Muzzled and Shackled?
Regarding the SUN-TV bit and the petition against supposedly “hateful” media, perhaps someone could start our OWN petition against the biased, elitist and hateful CBC…and then present the petition to the CRTC together with the Avaaz petition.
Agent Smith: “I thought [Teneycke] was doing an amazing job of shepherding SunTV thru the hoops!
He was, but his “crime” is that he used to work in the CPC PMO’s office. So, the asshat-leftards who are scared ****less about a non-lefty television channel have used Teneycke’s close association with PMSH to accuse the government of “interference” in getting SunTV off the ground.
Can you imagine if the leftards were in a position to want to open a TV channel? — as it is, they don’t have to, because pretty much all of the channels available to Canadians slant to the left and view the Liberal$ as “cronies” and vice-versa. It’s difficult to imagine anyone trying to shepherd such a channel not being in some way closely connected to the LiberalS — and, I’d wager, neither Avaaz.com nor any Canadian journalist would question this in any way.
Look at Gloria Galloway (Globe and Mail) and Susan Delacourt (TorStar) (and I know there are many others), both of whom are closely connected to the LPC through family members. Then, there’s Craig Oliver who canoed with Trudeau and still has PET on a pedestal. One hardly hears a peep about any possible “interference” in their reporting.
No, this is a one-way crony-media street. It’s OK when the cronies are l/Liberal$ and their media pals but absolutely verboten if the cronies are c/Conservatives and have any connection whatsoever with media personnel.
A deranged dominion, indeed.
Oh, and another thing: How arm’s length FROM THE MEDIA is the CRTC and its head-honchos? I think that’s a question that needs to be answered.
Having to apply to an organization like the CRTC, which has been stuffed with Liberal$ over the past almost 40 years, in order to launch a new TV channel, smacks of communist-style tactics.
Canada’s radio and television communications are really screwed up. Only l/Liberal$ need apply.
Its been years since the Liberals have run Canada for theft. Seems like they never left.
All the accouterments of a Liberal Plutocracy are still in place!
Which tells me Harper & company are the same old same old. Only less rapacious eaters. They like their Canadian Pie slow & easy pilfering. Not the ravenous appetite of the liberal or the instinctive hunger of an NDP in a blood eating frenzy to devour the simple fellows sparse meal.
Feed them all to the Great white Shark.

“NOAA’s sea ice extent blunder

In their zeal to get on the “death spiral” train of wild claims about Arctic sea ice, NOAA has made a major blunder, which they’ve now had to correct. Thanks to sharp eyed WUWT reader Marty yesterday who wrote:
I looked at it, it didn’t make sense. Where did they get “2nd Lowest Extent on Record” from? None of the datasets supported it.

Just finished watching Solomon on CBC’s P&P and he de facto accused Tony Clement of being a liar on the fighter jet deal.
After running a pre-recorded one-on-one with the minister, Solomon goes to his next guest and leads off by saying, “You heard what the minister had to say, now give us a reality check”.
Funny thing too, Evan never did declare for viewers that his next guest was a Liberal, simply saying at the end of the end of the interview that he worked for the minister of defence in 2002. (Kinda like how he goes to Errol Mendes at times and simply describes him as a University of Ottawa professor.)
Presumably Evan believes that his viewers should only be informed of people who had connections in the past to the Conservatives.
I’m disappointed with the Conservatives, however, for never mentioning the diesel powered subs the Liberals purchased and how exactly that’s consistent with their claims on the jet deal that they too want the best for our armed services people. I think it would put the Liberals on the defensive and force the media to give background on that issue… that is if they’re truly interested in fairness, which such context would provide.
Then again, had Clement and Hawn brought that up on today’s program, Evan likely would’ve cut them off and said that that’s separate issue, something in the past, something that’s not relevant to the discussion at hand.
A last thought, Solomon and the CBC continue to co-opt critics’ talking points by continuously describing Sun News TV as “Fox News North” when the truth of the matter is that it‘s their view too. I think if-and-when Sun News TV goes to air, every time the CBC is part of the discussion, the reporter, news anchor or talk show host should add, “what critics call the propaganda arm of the Liberal Party.” Would the CBC call that unfair? Does Solomon believe that only some media critics should have their opinions expressed? Apparently. Because in the segment that just ended, Solomon does a one-on-one with someone connected to the petition to stop Sun News TV in their application and allows him to get away with mischaracterizing them. The guest said that Sun News TV has already said it wanted to be just like FOX News… never did Solomon point out that that is related to the format it would take — news in the day, talk programming in the evenings. But the real knee-slapper came at the very end when the guest expressed outrage that Canadians shouldn’t have to pay for Sun News TV, that they should have a choice. I notice Solomon played it safe this time around, avoiding having someone else on to counter that claim, as what was done in late July when (Levant, I think it was), countered this very same guest’s opinion on that matter by asking why Canadians should be forced to pay for the CBC. Ironically, by not having someone to counter who no doubt would have raised the CBC‘s funding issue, Solomon in fact reinforces the CBC’s critics’ claim of he and his network having a bias.
Someone should investigate where Avaaz’s $110000 came from. They claimed to have raised this in the last few days. Well — perhaps, but they did not raise the dollars in Canada. Established left-leaning parties are having enough trouble raising money for themselves. Who believes that all those leftist supporters would cough up money for Avaaz’s cause?
batb: “How arm’s length FROM THE MEDIA is the CRTC and its head-honchos? I think that’s a question that needs to be answered.”
Answer: Not very. It’s well-known that big players in regulated industries are frequently buddy-buddy with the regulators. And very often top regulatory personnel arrive directly from (and go back to) top positions in said industries.
Exactly what I would have said, nv53, if I’d answered my own question! ‘Delighted we can agree on something! 😉
