  4. This is another example of leftards not making sense. You can argue nuance if you want, but basically if you don’t believe in God, you must believe that we are an animal like any other. All animals expand to the carrying capacity of their environment and then die off, usually as a result of destroying their environment. If there is no God we are no different. It appears to me that the leftards basically believe that as guardians of the earth we have dominion over the beasts of the land, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, which is basically a God centered view of the world. So which is it Leftards?

  8. minuteman – I don’t believe in god, and I don’t believe that man is the same as animals. Man has the unique ability for symbolic, referential reason, which enables him to analyze and predict the results of his interactions with the envt…and thus, control those interactions and that envt.
    It is absolutely false that animals expand to the carrying capacity of their envt..and then die off. Animals rarely if ever overreach the carrying capacity and do not die off and do not destroy their environment. Animals adapt to environmental changes.

    Oz, I do understand your point – and perhaps one could say that the broader issue here is that many on the left go beyond just being weird hippies to becoming dangerous (eg ALF, by any means necessary, etc). Full blown psychoses are different than that though. (I hope).
    In the end, I’m all for trying as much as possible not to polarize society into far right and far left – the problem with that approach is the ship automatically steers to the left. . . .

  17. erik larsen – my second point doesn’t relate to a predator/prey balance at all. It relates to an ecological adaptation and the plasticity of biological organisms to adapt to changes.
    That is, if birds that eat seeds are confronted with seeds with thicker shells, they will adapt and develop stronger beaks. Of course we are aware how bacteria adapt to antibiotics, but insects adapt to insecticides. There are even studies of bird wing shapes changing over the last 100 years due to loss of forest habitat.
    Again, absolutely nothing to do with predator/prey.

  23. ET, you are talking long term. I am talking short. The dear population goes through a boom and bust cycle. If left on their own they eat all the trees and turn their environment into a desert, then the numbers die off to a level that the vegetation can support. Partridge in Ontario go through a seven year cycle, where the population gets bigger and bigger, and then drops right off. We know this because we have been hunting them for so long. Look at the population of Canada Geese in Southern Ontario. They were considered an endangered species 30 years ago, now you can’t go outside without tripping over them. They will run out of places to nest and food sources and then drop off again. Humans do the same thing, we just don’t see it as easily because the time scale is so much longer. The plagues of the dark ages killed of a significant portion of the population of Europe, and in doing so destroyed civilization. Overpopulation of humans will cause the same thing to happen again eventually. The population will get bigger and bigger to the point where a few years of bad harvests will sort the wheat from the chaff.
    I am believe that we are just an animal like any other, and we will die off and start again, like we did after plagues, famines ice ages etc in the past. I believe that any man made solution to population control will be worse than the problem.

  29. minuteman – no, my examples are not long term. For example, (Science August 2006) outlines an example of a native mussel that grows a thicker shell to offset an invasive new species, the Asian shore crab. The mussels developed a thicker shell. In three months.
    The Galapagos finch beak shrank to deal with the loss of large seeds and the search for small seeds (Science July 2006). In one year.
    As for the the plagues of Europe, they did not destroy civilization. Instead, they forced the current societal structure, which was opposed to independent individual thought, to drastically change.
    The society required innovative technology to deal with the causes of disease, to deal with the also recurring famines and the problem of an inadequate agriculture and water treatment, waste treatment, knowledge of disease, etc. This was the impetus for the renaissance, based around the right of the individual to think and innovate and examine the environment. This led to enormous technological changes which increased food supply and dealt with disease.
    Man is the sole creature that can THINK and plan and develop technological solutions to population pressures. So – I disagree with your assessment.

    1. Opposed to the peace movement.
    2. Opposed to immigration.
    3. A fan of Malthus (whom Marx and Engels strongly rejected).
    4. Seemed obsessed with the idea that certain actions are “filthy”.
    5. Apparently hates sex.
    If you can read that manifesto and conclude that he’s either “right-wing” or “left-wing”, you’re grasping at straws. When a person is this insane, political ideology (or ideology of any kind) ceases to have much meaning. He’s rather like Gene Ray – so incoherent and inconsistent that he himself probably has no idea what he’s really talking about.

  41. ET – Look at the accomplishments of Greek and Roman civilization in terms of art science and technology. This died out at the beginning of the dark ages and was not equaled until the renaissance. There may be other factors, but I believe that one big factor was the death of enough people that the skills and knowledge could not be passed on. In the part of the world my ancestors came from 60 to 70% of the population died. That didn’t leave enough master craftsmen around to train the next generation of apprenticeships and the skills died, not to return for 400 years. I would call that civilisational collapse.
    You make some interesting points about molluscs and finches, but that doesn’t change my point about animal populations going up and down, as opposed to becoming extinct.
