Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips is a cover of a beautiful, melancholy song written in 1945 by French Poet Jacques Prevert and Hungarian-born composer Joseph Kosma. From a 1977 recording made in Milan, Italy, here’s Jazz trumpeter Chet Baker and Ruth Young duetting on a nicely languorous version of Autumn Leaves.

Here’s an interesting article about the disturbing and bizarre level of sympathy for Raoul Moat, a convicted child beater who became something of a cult hero in England after he shot his former girlfriend (she survived), killed her boyfriend, and then blinded a police officer by shooting him in the face. After Moat was finally cornered by police after a week on the run, and killed himself, Facebook tribute sites sprang up, people left flowers at the site where he was shot, and a large crowd showed up at his funeral to pay tribute.

    “One (attendee at Moat’s funeral) was…an unemployed 45-year-old mother of eight. She and her three of her sons sons, ages 15, 14 and 13 had travelled all night by bus, a distance of almost 300 miles just to be at the funeral of someone she didn’t know….Bystram was not shy in talking to the media about why she was there. She was quoted as saying, ‘I just think he is a hero and I wanted to pay my respects. He kept them coppers on the run all that time. Fair enough people died but they must have deserved it. He didn’t deserve what he got in the end.’”

    British PM David Cameron: “It is absolutely clear that Raoul Moat was a callous murderer, full stop, end of story. I cannot understand any wave, however small, of public sympathy for this man.”

  2. This goes hand in hand with Marxist environmentalists, trying to ban Dog or any animal breeding. Just another stage in the progressive agenda, to force pets from homes.

  3. Something like the Moat “tribute” happened in California, just outside of San Francisco, in the past year. I can’t remember the name of the fellow but the tribute nutters sound like they belong to the same cult. 🙁

    I’m glad you mentioned Jaques Prevert.
    Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Pat Boone, Andrea Bocelli and many more sang this timeless classic.
    I’ve always been amazed at the transformation between spring, summer, fall and winter. I visted a region of Australia where trees are green year round. Was quite surprised to see that deciduous trees exist over tyere as well, they lose their leaves year round, especially during dry periods.

  12. I caught a bit of an interview today on QR77 with Rutherford and Lord Monckton. I can’t find it on QR77’s site,but it was about a scathing report that said that the UN’s IPCC was mostly crap,their science wasn’t science,it was a political move. If anyone can find it,and provide a link,please do,it was a great interview.

  14. Another thing I can’t find,and I did at least two hours of searching through cbc’s archives and on google.Paul Martin was being interviewed by Mansbridge,Jan 18 2006.The show was called ‘Your Turn’.

    The segment was about banning handguns. This was only a few weeks after the shooting of Jane Kreba by the basketball gangstas.

    Paul Martin was asked by Mansbridge if a ban on handguns was necessary considering that we had the gun registry.Paul Martin,leader of the Liberal party,and the Prime Minister of Canada,responded that the long gun registry was about targetting farmers and duck hunters,legitimate gun owners, and was completely different than a handgun ban.

    This part of the interview has gone down the cbc’s memory hole,but I’m pretty sure that I have it on VHS.

    I was watching the tweets back and forth between Atwood and Ezra Levant last night. When she signed the petition, she actually thought it WAS FoxNews setting up a Canadian branch.
    So she signed a petition about which she acknowledges having no information about. Next she will be signing that famous petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide.

  26. Linda McQuaig chimes in on the move to ban the new conservative TV station here in Canada.
    How these Leftists can so casually work at banning free speech (which in NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM is hate speech!!!) that they disagree with is an amazing thing to behold … and not in a good way. I’m reminded of an e-mail I received and have posted before:
    If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
    If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
    If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
    If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
    If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
    If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.
    If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
    A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

  33. Apparently Chris Matthews, he of the ‘tingling leg adoration of Obama’ has, ahh, cooled off.
    He’s now saying that Obama is too bonded to the teleprompter, claiming that Obama is ‘just reading words now’; that even when he has business men into the White House, he reads them a speech from the teleprompter, and is “using the teleprompter instead of his heart and mind”.
    Well, well. So finally, people are wondering – what’s wrong with Obama? They at first tried to explain that cool aloofness as ‘he’s cerebral, he’s an intellectual, he’s thinking about everything’. Now, it’s becoming clear that Obama isn’t thinking about a thing; that he totally lacks empathy for anyone.
    If he’s in a situation which is not about Himself, which does not result in immediate adultion – then, Obama goes into deep freeze. He only turns on when he can manipulate and control people, directly, into an immediate reaction of adulation.
    Obama, furthermore, is not interested in policies and programs – all that tedious stuff that has to be thought through and analyzed. So, when he has to address an audience about these things, he absolutely must rely on a teleprompter and he reads it without interest or even, understanding.
    It’s fascinating to watch how the veneer of Messianic glory around Obama is shedding, is dripping away…leaving an empty shell.
