If You Own Unbroken Grassland In Washington-Idaho

Plow now.

A large white earthworm native to portions of Idaho and Washington will undergo a status review to determine if the species warrants protection under the Federal Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) announced Tuesday.
The giant Palouse earthworm, a species first described in 1897, was once thought to be abundant in the Palouse area but has rarely been seen in the intervening 113 years and only at a handful of sites. The most recent sighting, earlier this year, located a group of worms believed to be giant Palouse earthworms near Moscow, Idaho. An earlier survey found the species near Ellensburg, Washington.
[…]
Recently, the giant Palouse earthworm has only been found in undisturbed or untilled habitat. Therefore, whether or not the species becomes listed, conservation of the species should include maintenance of remaining undisturbed habitat.

  1. It’s not only the rare Palouse earthworm that concerns me, what about ALL the earthworms sliced up in every plowed field across North America!
Agriculture should be banned except for carefully inspected window boxes!
Like the Spotted Owl that ruined the forest industry in Oregon,we may rue the day anyone ever mentioned the Palouse earthworm.

  2. This will become so absurd that like Mugabeland ,they starve for a worm. We know what at the back of this. Land theft by an out of control government.
Don’t be surprised if Obama starts giving other peoples property to illegals or poor Urban Blacks.
Your absolutely right Kate. Their kneecapping the Nations support system.

  3. Once again…
    protection for the white earthworm,
but kill the baby in the womb.
    We are doomed.

I prefer to think the radical leftards are doomed. Those of us with plows, tools, guns and critical thinking skills will get by.

  5. I didn’t realize Pelosi was an earth worm. I thought she was a canker worm. Too bad she wasn’t a little more rare though.

  6. Environmentalism is the socialist’s lever to neuter everyone’s property rights. It is the tranny of the crown.
In the US they at least have a constitution that enshrines this rights so at least property owners have a chance at fighting back.
In Canada we do not have formal constitutionally guaranteed property rights. Many on the left claim that this was an oversight on the part of Trudeau – that it is no big deal. The opposite is true on both counts.
If farmers in Idaho are wise to plow, we in Canada would be wise to push hard and sooner than later for constitutional change.

  7. Gord, here’s what a very wise man once said about the inviolability of peoples’ property rights.
“The moment the idea is admitted into society, that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If “Thou shalt not covet,” and “Thou shalt not steal,” were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society, before it can be civilized or made free.”
US Founding Father and 2nd President John Adams

  8. They want to protect white worms but won’t protect the rights of white people to vote by prosecuting the New Black Panther Party thugs in Philly … typical.

  9. The Palouse earthworm…no doubt a species closely related to the LizzyMae pinworm.

  10. The picture of this ‘brute’ is extremely misleading. The worm is measured from the wromg end of the tape measure/ruler. By my reckoning, and advanced ciphering, the worm may be only 5 inches long, using your standard 12″ ruler. However,if it is a 6′ tape measure that bugger would be 5’5″ long, truly a giant, and would rule the bait box.

  11. A heads up for the young’uns out there. The (‘) mark stands for feet, the (“) stands for inches.

  12. Do these eco-geniuses (or is that genii) know what happens when you cut an earthworm in half?

  14. Some entrepreneur ought to start breeding and marketing these things as a unique recreational fishing bait.

That is a pithy juxtaposition which aptly, succinctly, and powerfully highlights the twisted ‘morals’ of modern Liberalism.

  16. Any shale oil possibilities around there? I have been reading about eco lawfare being waged on ranchers that graze public lands. It is starting to become a cause celeb and a real problem with dozens of lawsuits on the go.
My view on the worm is feed it to the Darter, turn the water on and grow some food or something.

  17. “A little pink dye injected into that sucker and the Walleye would go nuts!”

    However,wallyj’s avoid pink worms.

  18. wait, something is a little off here… read this carefully:
“…a species first described in 1897, was once thought to be abundant in the Palouse area but has rarely been seen in the intervening 113 years and only at a handful of sites”
The article implies agricultural land use and commercial development has caused this worm to become endangered. The fact is these have always been an extremely rare & hard to find worm! Large scale farming didn’t start in the region until the 1880’s, even 10 years later it’s hard to imagine that most of this “abundant” worm’s habitat had been broken.

  19. The new ‘We’re all gonna die” is loss of species. They call it preserving bio-diversity and that sounds pretty good but they are the ones that want to decide. I think if the species have survived with the current land user, it’s a good thing.

  20. Is that worm about as endangered as the polar bear?
Landowners in this province who are concerned about the lack of private property rights can join the Ontario Landowners’ Association – they have a website. The members are battling to have private property rights enshrined in the Canadian Constitution. It’s the rural folk who are expected to sacrifice their land to save the endangered flower, the critter, or the tree, with no compensation.
    Plow now indeed, Kate.

  21. That area of the states was famous for a light coloured horse with spotted markings on it’s butt,
    the palouse horse.
I have always assumed this was the basis for Nancy Pelousi’s name, though god help anyone who researches this.
What I’m wondering is there any markings on these rare worm’s butts and if so how can you tell which end is which?

  22. I love the advertising right under the article. You can’t make this stuff up for love or money.
At first I thought this a joke. But being that the World is so preposterous today. You never know if your being punked anymore.

  23. It would be a lot cheaper to take a few specimens, sequence their DNA and keep some frozen fertilized eggs in liquid N2. Then, if anyone ever had the urge to have these critters burrowing in their garden they could order some from the company that kept the frozen specimens. Same method would work for a lot of other “endangered” species. I expect it won’t be long before a local whiskey distiller puts out a premium product with one of the Palouse earthworms in the bottom of every bottle; not the sissy little worm that comes with some brands of tequila.
While on the subject of earthworms, I never was able to train them to run a maze when I was attempting to come up with an original undergrad physiology project. I also discovered that dropping earthworms into liquid N2 kills them as none of the subjects who were frozen showed any inclination to move after being thawed out.

  24. wallyj 3:41… Looks like the tape could be 2 inches on a a surveyor’s tape because it is divided into 10/ths rather than 16/ths of an inch.

  25. “Hello, my name is Cosmo Kramer, and you’re on the Palouse Earthworm Special Bus Tour. Now in just four hours, we will be in the habitat of the Palouse Earthworm. Until then, feel free to wander about the bus or even throw yourself under it.”

  26. Apparently there is such a thing as ‘earthworm composting outhouses’. I’m gonna git me one of those.
    My plan:
I’ll need about a hundred of the creepy crawlers, and I’m gonna paint ’em red- as in ‘Liberal’ red.
I’ll need a big un- I’ll call him Iggy, and about a half dozen a bit smaller… for- ‘Ralphie, Boob, Hedy, Scott Brokeback, U. Dish Sponge, and that titan, John McCallamity.
The rest can be rejects, and underachievers (fittingly).
Every morning, I’ll find great delight in talkin’ to and ‘showing my support’ to these bottom feeders.
I will try to occasionally vary the menu with beer, sauerkraut and kolbasa / as opposed to the usual whisky, sardines and chilli to show that I am thinking of them. :>))

  27. The earth’s ecology didn’t go all to hell when they took the smallpox virus out of it. So there’s no particular reason to think there would be a problem if another species were taken out. Not that we should do it on purpose in most cases.

  28. Black Mamba @ 12:47 AM (1:47 Atlantic?). Known as a diurnal creature, what’s with this nocturnal stuff? It’s very late…

  29. Just a general question: Why couldn’t mosquitoes, black flies, mice, raccoons, carpenter ants and cockroaches be on the endangered species list?
I have a big garden full of earthworms, I plow it every year with a roto-tiller and the worms do alright. When you cut a worm in two, one half (sometimes both) survives.

  30. I’ll get the relatives out west to bring me some for my next fishing trip, fish here are getting to be as finnicky as Iggy and his diet.

  31. So, let’s see if I’ve got the drill. One less kind of critter than there was the other day, and it’s, “Mass extinction! Ecological disaster!”
One more, and it’s “Alien species invasion! Ecological disaster!”
    How’m I doin’ here?

  32. A few live Palouse Earthworms were recently found near Moscow, Idaho (six miles from here) at an area called Paradise Ridge. The enviros have been trying to keep US Highway 95 from being rerouted through a portion of this area, a realignment that would eliminate a significantly dangerous part of the highway. They don’t really give a crap about the worm, but rather more about a new highway possibly being closer to their elitist homes. Moscow, Idaho is home to the University of Idaho and is filled to the gills with academic Commies, greenie-weenies, and assorted other forms of “useful idiots”. BTW, the worm is long, pink and it spits when excited. It’s a bit of a dick.

  33. The most recent sighting, earlier this year, located a group of worms believed to be giant Palouse earthworms near Moscow, Idaho…
Wrong. Most recent sighting is in the GTA. Giant worms sitting as directors of “Stewardship Ontario”.
And they are not in any way endangered. Matter of fact, they’re flourishing.
