I’m very glad Mr. Bergamini got away from these thugs — what a hair-raising incident — but I found myself wondering why he and his Israeli friend a) didn’t call the police from the bar, or why someone in the bar or the bouncers didn’t and b) why ON EARTH they even THOUGHT of walking home a few minutes later?
If I’d been him I’d either have taken a taxi home or to the nearest police station, to at least report the incident so there’d be documentation of it.
Having said that, I wonder if the police would have done anything. After their sensitivity training, their multicultural training, and their inclusiveness training, — which seem to have relegated Christians and Jews to the back of the multi-culti bus — police officers no longer seem to be the protectors of civilized, law-abiding citizens or the purveyors of law and order. Their specialty seems to be to protect only certain visible minorities.

The police must be involved and I read that they were contacted. There is probably nothing they can do because the person who caused the actual violence that occurred is unknown and the threats, and even the knife would be reduced to ‘show’ by any defense lawyer.

Sasquatch, you’re wrong about self-defence being a criminal offense. The key to not being charged is to use proportional force; if someone comes at you with a machete then deadly force is justified. It’s so much easier in the US where one has concealed carry. I’ve carried a knife on me for 40+ years and now I can say it is a medical tool in case I have to perform an emergency tracheostomy on someone.
The best hint I got was from a retired detective who advised me to use my right to make a citizens arrest in a situation where force might be required. Once one has made a citizens arrest there is the hassle of having to transport the arrested suspect to the police station, but should the person you’ve just arrested resist that arrest then you can use all the force necessary to subdue them and not be charged with assault. However, in a situation where one is outnumbered 3:1 and not armed, being fleet of foot is likely the most prudent solution until one can arrange more even odds for the next confrontation.

This has been reported in the media and the matter should go to the police and charges need to be laid. In Canada, you do not have the constitutional right to self defence. If withdrawl (running away) is possible to extricate yourself from violent harm and you do not afford yourself of this option you are charged with assault etc.
Here locally at a high school, one student sucker punched another student inflicting dental damage. One blow….the victim did not retaliate but was suspended for 3 days, like his assailant, for “fighting”.
Only the video record, allowed the Police to interveen, arrest and charge the aggressor. Because the agressor was a “visible minority” he was granted bail and then committed violent home invasions.
In a rare incident of justice the aggressor was incarcerated and subsequently deported.
The victim was in due course expelled from school as on a technicality.
The situation in Ottawa is basiccally identical.
Complaints against any ethnicity are met with accusation of discrimination of some flavour.
These academics seem to be dominated by the anti-social lefties and have a disproportionate influence on society in general.
