Future Of Carleton University "Aids Awareness Week" Also In Doubt

The proposal to abandon the Carleton Unversity Students' Association was put forward after it was recently revealed to only include bigots, and primarily idiots.

Hi Kate. it's funny, I checked SDA specifically to see if you had gotten this yet. I am the person who opposed the motion.

Since the bigots at CUSA voted in favour, I contacted the media.

But getting on SDA is better than CTV National. I love your blog.

So they got sexism and racism in one stupid motion.

A simple internet search would have revealed that CF affects males and females equally as any first year biology student learned in high school it is Autosomal Recessive. Moreover it affects African and Asian populations as the gene exists sometimes in high frequency in certain isolated gene pools. Males tend to LIVE LONGER hence the population proportion differential, which means it hurts females more - all the more reason to fund research from a social lefty point of view.

However as the illustrious Journalism Doctor Miller has demonstrated, the "liberal left" cannot use the internet properly either.

I am Queens Alumni, and in light of their recent free speech assault they aren't getting anymore of my money. I hope Carleton University alumni will do the same to their homeland as well.

My own take on it:

Anyone still in doubt why Carleton is labeled "Last Chance U"?

Posted by: b_C at November 25, 2008 6:53 PM

My interpretation of the first post is that they were idiots for doing what they did because
doesn't only affect "white men", and therefore they would have been perfectly justified in doing what they did if it did only effect people of a male European persuasion.

My post on the subject:

http://searchingforliberty.blogspot.com/2008/11/boycott-support-for-carleton-and-queens.html

My email to:

President of CUSA - pres@cusaonline.com
President of Carleton University -presidents_office@carleton.ca

Carleton Undergraduate Students Association:

The degree to which you, as an organization, have embarrassed yourselves, your fellow students, and your University is remarkable. The decision to cancel support for Cystic Fibrosis because it affects “mostly white men” is, well, perverse.

Post-secondary education is supposed to be the bastion of advanced free thought – yet, you, the representatives of the students of Carleton University, have decided to refuse to support a cause on the basis of the gender and race of the people in need. I am assuming that there will be no support for fighting AIDS (white men primarly) or Breast Cancer either.

There is, sadly, no other way to describe those who voted to do this but as small-minded bigots. I am thankful to live in Alberta where people are more open-minded and free thinking.

Posted by: Rob Harvie at November 25, 2008 7:00 PM

I just left them a note letting them know that I will not be hiring any people from Carleton University in our business (A high paying technical field in the oil patch).

I will also be forwarding this article on to several people I know in the HR industry and will be asking them if they want to hire biggots and morons.

Is this a sick joke? An attention getting stunt? It has got to be a setup. Other wise, it is definitely a "What the heck were you thinking moment!"

Nothing like insulting a large proportion of the country by making even their diseases untouchable.

Posted by: lynnh at November 25, 2008 7:19 PM

Using that kind of criteria I guess they'll be stopping any fundraising for breast cancer too.

Posted by: VanIslander at November 25, 2008 7:25 PM

Ah Cartoon U! So far from God, so close to idiocy. Mind you the kids were likely just trying to "Think Globally, etc." and suck up to their mentors. Let those blond guys with CS from rich famblies pay their own way! Right On!

Two thoughts:

University students who have trouble with figuring out who's in the Caucasian tent and who isn't might want to hit the books a little harder and skip the Marxist performance art.

Someone could point out to them that that research into some quite mundane and seemingly useless areas has often resulted in breakthroughs that shook the world when the knowledge was applied elsewhere.

Shining shoes is so lame.

Posted by: Sgt Lejaune at November 25, 2008 7:29 PM

Here's the comment I just submitted at that linked page:

How about an historical analogy to illuminate the racial bigotry of this new stance? Let's go back to the 1850's:

"Whereas slavery only affects black people, the CUSA will cease to advocate Abolition of Slavery in America.

Be it resolved that the CUSA shall select a new broad reaching cause for orientation week."

I suggest you select the cause of Alleviating the Cognitive and Moral Dissonance of the "Progressive" Mindset.

Posted by: Dave in Pa. at November 25, 2008 7:33 PM

Passing tests in higher learning doen't make one smart. It just means you passed the test. Logic and productive thought is another thing, which is missing in the student assnociation.

Posted by: Ken E. at November 25, 2008 7:38 PM

You can lead a student to school, but you can't make them think.

Trouble is, it's the 1% of whiny trouble-makers with light class schedules who run student councils. The rest of the student body is too busy getting their degrees to pay attention to the political animals that get in, and the one chance per term that the entire student body can forget about courses and have fun raising money for charity gets blown to smithereens. And these twerps love the kind of attention this will bring - there is no possibility of shame in the face of such ugly righteousness.

We must terminate funding into sickle cell anemia because it only affects blacks; and breast cancer because it only affects women.

What death-inducing disease research are we allowed to fund, CUSA?

Well, cystic fibrosis increases hypercapnea (means more CO2 in the blood than normal) so curing it would increase overall human generated carbon dioxide emissions.

Posted by: Ron Good at November 25, 2008 8:36 PM

Dutch Canuck has nailed it. University student councils are nurseries for socialist larvae. It was the same at UBC, lo, these many years ago. I had Svend Robinson pegged as a political jerk long before I knew he batted for the other team.

The root of the problem is that these bodies have a budget, funded by a mandatory dues checkoff imposed on the students, most of whom don't take part in student council activities. So, just like a piece of meat left out in the sun spawns a crop of maggots, a student council budget spawns a crop of larval politicians.

The answer to this sort of thing is to make membership and funding of student councils 100% voluntary. Kick in your twenty bucks, or whatever it is these days, and you can vote for the larvae of your choice, or become one yourself. Keep your wallet in your pocket, and you stay the Hell out of student politics, and the moonbats who do wind up on the council cannot claim the moral authority of speaking for you. As it stands, these bigots at Carleton can make the claim of representing the entire student body, as they are funded by the entire student body. If their funding came only from the relative handful of students who actually cared to pony up the council dues, then they would be rightly ignored as the lunatic fringe they are.

Posted by: gordinkneehill at November 25, 2008 8:39 PM

Getting lost in the feeding frenzy is the BIG PICTURE.

All lefties believe that all things are political, not economic, nor humanitarian. Well, these lefties at CUSA have made the provision of health-care political; that is, subject to the whims of the political ruling class. This is why health care should not be a state monopoly.

Posted by: RW at November 25, 2008 8:41 PM

It's not called Cartoon for nothing.

Even IF CF affected only white males, what possible justification could these idiots have for saying that funding to help them is to be cut off?

I know. White males, particularly Dead White Males (DWEMS)--but obviously in this case live white males with a disease--are at the bottom of the multicultural ladder (and aren't considered to be "multicultural" at all).

This thinking is APPALLING and totally unacceptable. What would you expect, however, after 15 years in the Canadian "educational" (sic and sick) system, which has downgraded anyone whose heritage is white and European, particularly males, to the bottom of the multi-culti heap?

Typically 5% of the student body chooses to vote on the election of the student council. This apathy extends to municiple level government and so on. Those who lean left tend to get involved and earn the right to make policy. Apathy is a dangerous thing. On campus perhaps the only openly conservative voices allowed are the commerce students, but their workload tends to discourage council involvement. Research has subsequently found over 1,000 different mutations that cause CF. Lap-Chee Tsui led a team of researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto that discovered the gene responsible for CF in 1989.

e-mail sent to Brittany Smyth, president of CUSA:

Dear Ms. Smyth,

Words almost fail me concerning not only the stupidity but the breathtakingly racist overtones for the reasons why CUSA has made a decision not to continue with Shinerama to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Of course, it's not factual that CF mostly affects only white males; it turns out that it equally affects males and females, but that females with CF have a shorter lifespan.

But, even if it were true that only white males are affected, it is repugnant that CUSA members--well 17 of them; at least two were reasonable and compassionate--felt that they could decide to defund CF because, I guess, they just don't care about white males.

What kind of criteria is that: withdraw health care and/or support from groups of a certain gender and/or a certain racial group? Isn't that called racist? Let me explain to you what I mean. Turn the scenario around: What if CF mostly affected black females. Would it be acceptable to withdraw support from them because of their race or gender? Wouldn't folks be screaming "racism!" and "sexism!"?

Your group needs to take a good look at yourselves and totally rethink your modus operandi. You've got to shake out the faulty stereotypes you harbour and do your homework about the facts of Cystic Fibrosis. You also need to understand that white males are very much a valued part of Canada's "multicultural" mosaic--at least in my books. "Multicultural," if it means anything, is inclusive and diverse, both concepts you say you value.

So prove it. Include white males in your circle of care and compassion. Otherwise you deserve the ridicule and contempt of fair-minded Canadians.

Posted by: isupportwhitemales at November 26, 2008 7:16 AM

It's not just a mild form of racism, it's the sheer arrogance, agitation and hatred put on public display. The intention is clearly about killing off white men.

Posted by: irwin daisy at November 26, 2008 8:31 AM

Great letter, isupportwhitemales: so do I!

Considering that Ms Smyth obviously has a vacuum where her brain should be, I don't know if she'll actually be capable of processing your reasonable argument.

I'm pleased that the universities' (Queens, Carlton, Calgary) perverse thought processes, moral pygmyism, bigotry, and censorship are being aired in the MSM this week for all to see: the victims at the universities are often the same conservative (often Christian) law abiding Canadians that the HRCs persecute.

It seems to me that, as more Canadians see the totalitarianism embedded at the centre of our culture these days, they’re becoming more willing to take a stand. Perhaps a tipping point is not too far away and the majority of Canadians, who are sick of coddling dysfunctional malcontents, at our considerable expense, will really start to talk—and push—back.

One can only hope that Stephen Harper and his Conservative government will be among this group.

Posted by: lookout at November 26, 2008 8:43 AM

Multi-culturalism is now and always has been a cynical effort to extort special deals for favored groups in society, so as to buy votes from the stupid. Multi-cult activists do not believe in -equal- rights for all. They believe in no rights for anybody. Privileges are dispensed to select groups to better keep the proles in line.

This Carleton business is typical of what we are seeing non university campi these days. The kids are acting on what they've been taught, they just aren't as smooth as the seasoned grown ups in the leftist political parties.

The kids actually say what they mean, that white males are unworthy of their charity. Grown up leftists find comforting lies to cloak themselves in but do the same things.

If what they meant was they wanted to re-examine who they contribute to then they said it in the worst possible way. The only disease they could contribute to now is the braod based Canadian Cancer Society...as it covers all of them...What tools.

The nice thing is these names will forever be attatched to this and will show up at every reference check these idiots ever apply to.

Student Councils are ridiculous things anyway. Money extorted from all with no tie to any accountability. Nuclear free zones, charity picking, disallowing military recruitment at the job fair. Student councils should be worried about oh I dont know....running the student pub.

From the Charlatan of November 26th:

"The motion was proposed by Donnie Northrup, the science faculty representative."

From the CU Journalism and Communication's Blog post of September 25th:

"In Canada, Donnie Northrup is well below average.

Currently completing a bachelor of science degree at Carleton University, the 20-year-old plans to pursue a graduate degree in educational studies before eventually moving on to law school.

But Northrup, a dean’s list student, is $12,000 in debt—which puts him well below the national average of $25,000.

So in the shadow of rapidly rising post-secondary education costs, Northrup is ostensibly fortunate.
“I have a lot of friends who are going to graduate from their undergrad with $20,000 to $30,000 in debt,” he said. “They’re going to start their working lives already so much in debt that they’re never going to be able to accumulate wealth within a reasonable amount of time.” ...

IF this is the same Donnie Northrup in both instances, then Canada, meet one of your future lawyers or teachers. A liberal thinker more worried about a reasonable amount of time within which to accumulate wealth than the neccessity of being accurate in science when it pertains to "white men's diseases".

This small-minded, petty, and puerile motion properly reflects the gross stupidity of the student association. They deserve all of the flack that is coming their way. As a Carleton alumnus, I know that the CUSA was never in tune with a significant segment of the student body. It's unfortunate that the University (students and faculty) are getting painted with the same brush for the actions of a small group of idiots.

"Those who lean left tend to get involved and earn the right to make policy."-janet

I do agree with everybody that these students made a disgusting choice but where in the world did Janet come up with this stat?

Posted by: Right of centre at November 26, 2008 10:07 AM

The Left are hurtling themselves at Mach 10 towards the brick wall known as the Right.

When they hit it?

It's gonna leave a mark on their noggins.

Excuse me while I run out for some popcorn and beer...and some rebar.

I think the Carlton U student council should reconsider their vote on this incomplete motion. What they should have said is they are providing their money to research for CF, but any treatment or cure should only be directed towards women and children and excluding white adult males ... triaging out the oppressive patriarchal ones.

What has happened at Carlton is easily explainable as a manifestation of hating father figures which oppressed them at a younger age and now their hatred reveals itself once they have assumed positions of power. Give them a few years and they will grow into manure adults .. after graduation and with no job prospects.

Posted by: Observant at November 26, 2008 12:12 PM

Janet is probably correct there RoC.

Think about it. Left leaning student. Means courses like PoliSci 101, Basket Weaving 200 etc etc. You know, courses that don't even require any real interest in, let alone effort or attendance. Leaves lots of time for things like student councils/unions.

Right leaning student understands that they are paying for a service and are damned well going to get their money's worth. That of course means taking useful (more expensive) courses and attending them. Add in an honest amount of homework and study, that leaves little time for trivialities like the student council. Time away from the books needs to be directed at useful pursuits, like beer.

"Give them a few years and they will grow into manure adults .. after graduation and with no job prospects."

Actually, that is not the impediment it used to be. All they have to do is become a community organizer, write two autobiographical books before they are 40, then run for high office. Maturity, accomplishment and truthfullness are not in the job description.

See, it's simple. Recent history proves it works.

"“Could she be guilty of racial profiling or racism?”

What part of “white males are not eligible for life saving or charitable care giving services” is not racist?

Of course she’s racist! Of the most blatant kind, the roll out the burning crosses and lynch mobs kind of a racist."

Thank you for making my point > Exactly

Interesting though that the website has the names and correct email contact info for all of the members. Can't how people voted however.

Posted by: EdC at November 26, 2008 1:34 PM

I did volunteer work at a children's hospital for a number of years, and so saw firsthand what a horrible disease CF is. For the Carlton students to cut off funding because they believe the only children affected are white and male is beyond disgusting.

Posted by: Barbara at November 26, 2008 1:41 PM

The [Carleton] Charlatan states in their article about the Shinerama back-pedal that CUSA president Brittany Smyth is attempting reassure everybody by noting "very little, if any, discussion was focused on the perambulatory [sic] clause that contains the controversial statement about who is affected by cystic fibrosis"

(side issue: I'm sure they meant "preambulatory" since they weren't discussing walking)

Ms Smyth actually thinks it's better that the racist/sexist ideology behind the motion didn't even rise much of an eyebrow. Yeah, sure...that's reassuring; I gather that means they accept the point of view as a given, something to be assumed when discussing other issues as well.

Fire. Them. Too.

Northrup is planning on attending law school?

Given a Liberal government he should be on track to eventually be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada...

of course this bit of nasty business will make that a little messy.

FYI - This story made the Dennis Prager radio show today. It's on the air right now.

You should be able to get the podcast tomorrow (Nov. 27) from Townhall.com. It should be right at the start of the 3rd hour of the Prager podcast.

RoC (@ 10:07), unlike some perhaps, I think janet has eyes to see and ears to hear: are you able to name one university student council or union, with evidence, that is conservative?

To my knowledge, including my late, so-called professional organization (teachers), as well as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, which is in cahoots with the OHRC, student councils and unions are unremittingly—and stupidly, using extortion for their fees—run, into the ground, by left wing ideologues and idiots.

The evidence is out there for all to see. If RoC thinks otherwise, the burden of proof is on this person to make the case, not simply assert it (the typical, ineffective, “make my case” mode of the lefties).

As utterly moronic as the original motion and vote are, I gotta give major props to the kids at Carleton that are completely outraged and disgusted at this foolishness.

The Facebook page they started today was at about 1300 members three hours ago. Now it sits at over 2400. Notices of recalls have already been issued if I read some of the posts correctly.

These kids are seriously PO'd. There is hope after all.

Of course, in a reasonable country, things like this could be a bit messy. But, in Canada?

Remember that Rosalie Abella (now on the SCC), in order to accommodate homosexual desires—termed necessities—lowered the age of sexual consent to 14, and the SCC has just termed, as a right, two airline seats for the price of one for obese passengers.

At the moment, accountability is a lost cause in Canada.

This explains everything...

"I was CUSA’s president in 1983-1984."

From the Ottawa Citizen, today:

http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=7464a396-fad3-46b5-947c-f041cc0cf8a4

"Mr. Northrup [the fellow that proposed the resolution] said 'not a lot of thought' went into the wording, and didn't realize caucasian applied to other groups that weren't necessarily white."

Ah, right. If it *had* meant only white folks, that woulda been just peachy.

Mr Northrup is a fourth year integrated science student at Carleton.

Mr Northrup also mentioned that writing is not something he's focusing his degree on.

Understood, but...it's his *thinking* that's the problem.

Posted by: Ron Good at November 26, 2008 3:06 PM

Actually lookout,

In the homosexual case, all the court did was say it was unconstitutional to have one law for straight people and one law for homosexuals.

The law of consent was 14 for straights so that's what the court ruled was valid for homosexuals.

Harper has since raised the age for everyone to 16 (which should be a first step to a tiered system of protection.)

The law should be equal for all. So, as much of a problem as I often have with the SCC, this is a valid and consistent ruling.

Posted by: lookout at November 26, 2008 6:25 PM

Warwick, despite the danger of contracting AIDS and the fact that young, “clean” sex partners for homosexuals were desirable for older partners, Rosalie Abella had no qualms about lowering the age of consent for male homosexuals to 14.

She said that the law as it stood “arbitrarily disadvantages gay men [sic] by denying to them until they are 18 a choice available at the age of 14 for those who are not gay, namely their choice of sexual expression [that would be sodomy] with a consenting partner.” So, thanks to Abella, sodomy became a right for 14 year olds. Only in Canada . . .

Yes, the Conservatives, thank goodness, have upped the age of consent. This in no way exonerates Abella.

No one who has ever treated CF victims, male and female, could see this resolution by CUSA as anything other than an act of the most appallingly callous savagery. Those students are beneath animals in my view. I have personally watched a seven year old girl wither and eventually die from the effects of this horrible disease. Throughout her struggle she was the epitome of courage, even humour in the face of her terrible struggle. And hers was one of the rare cases during my medical training that brought me to uncontrolled tears.
I'd love to have one of those CUSA members show themselves at my door. It would not end well for them.

Posted by: DrD at November 26, 2008 11:29 PM

Well-said, DrD: These students are cretins. I deal with kids like this nearly every day in the classroom.

No compassion, no empathy, no milk of human kindness. It's just ME! ME! ME! and what's important to ME. Thought processes are on permanent hold and reality be damned. I DO WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT, SO OUTTA MY WAY.

Be scared, Canada. Be very scared.
