Nicholson has called on Ignatieff to intervene and force the Liberal senators to drop the amendments.
“He should impose some discipline down there,” he said.
Ignatieff supports the tough-on-crime bill. The move by Liberal senators only enhances the perception that the Liberal party is not fully behind its leader.
Related: watch here for your latest developments in Ontario Peewee hockey ….

Iggy is now denying that he’s going to raise taxes and cut spending to fight the deficit that Liberal members were telling the media yesterday would be part of Iggy’s ‘adult conversation about the deficit’.
With all due respect Kate, please warn us about such vile links.
Kate, I’m going to have to right-click each link’s properties from now on. Catsmeat must get half his visitors from your site.
Come on Gus, CTV ain’t that bad!!!
;/
Always mouse over links first! Did Wornout have anything to say on it btw? I gotta imagine the ol brain matter is boiling on this one.
I notice there is a sudden lack of talk about polls on the Ontario peewee page.
How DARE people say that Liberals are soft on crime!!!

New Poll results:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/10/07/ekos-poll-federal-conservative-liberal-ndp-green-bloc.html
Ha! Didn’t get me on WK site! Do not want to catch the H1N1, or something. With the release of a new poll showing PM Harper’s lead is growing, now is the time to cut party subsidy. Get rid of the Green,(they don’t even have a sitting MP, why are we paying them???) they would probably go to Jack-off. Get rid of the BQ (they would actually have to do some work to raise money to run in a federal election), I have now idea how they would split up, probably three ways. The we could get back to having a government the represents all of Canada not just one province or a select few wing-nuts.
We are in danger of bringing Warren’s wittle server down.
Big O recently- we’re staying in A’stan.
But behind the scenes the stage is being set for something different.
“WASHINGTON — President Obama’s national security team is moving to reframe its war strategy by emphasizing the campaign against Al Qaeda in Pakistan while arguing that the Taliban in Afghanistan do not pose a direct threat to the United States, officials said Wednesday.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/08/world/asia/08prexy.html?_r=1&hp
When things aren’t going Warren’s way (since Iffy declared government non-support) he diverts his reader’s attention to things like how bad his punk band is, another pointless youtube video, or his boy’s latest hockey tourney. The few apologies he has been able to muster over the last few years was the topic of another filler post on his site lately. Anything to help Warren avoid the sagging Liberal polling numbers. Predictably, his latest entry is a Harper video because today’s polls are the worst yet.
“He should impose some discipline down there,”
Yeah, he should threaten to fire a couple of those Senators.
We can see kinsella’s deft touch at the helm as the libby ship bounces from ice berg to submerged rock to sandy beach. But never mind, there’s a whole lot of butt kicking going on, it’s just rather badly directed. I suspect kinsella’s inflated reputation as a strategist is also sinking.
If his reputation is sinking, biff jupiter, it’s well deserved. Because, frankly, the only reason Katman was able to “kick butt” during the 90’s was due to a fractured opposition. It was the political equivalent of the proverbial body builder kicking sand on the 98-pound weakling. He was in the right place at the right time.
Over the years, my impressions of Katman have formed that he is immature and petulant. He’s certainly no political guru, and the current Liberal fortunes prove this. For Iggy to be matching (beating?) Dion-like polling number a mere 5-months after his coronation is an accomplishment.
Looks good on ‘im. ;^]
Hmmmmm.
Has anyone else noticed a co-relation between the saging popularity of OBOZO et al in the US and Iggy et al’s sagging popularity in Canuckistan?
Is this an indication of how american political propaganda affects the less sophisticated of our citizens?
I have noticed an immense emotional investment by our leftists and our MSM in OBOZO’s cause.
Sorry for the 11:37 post,I thought I was in Readers Tips.
C’mon now, this is quite logical.
Liberals clearly want “time spent” (aka time spent sitting as elected MPs or MPPs) to reduce their time spent in jail following their soon-to-occur corruption convictions.
Under these amendments, McGuinty will already have “served” more than 20 years for his finally caught inaction on favouritism related to hundreds of millions of dollars in wasted contracts. He’ll probably avoid any jail time at all if convicted under this amended legislation.
On another topic, I hope SDA readers take the needed time to scroll past needlessly long posts to read this one.
The more I see new poll numbers the more I like the idea of an election.
This disfunctional Senate just might be the reason PMSH needs to call one. If the Lieberals can’t govern within the House of Commons – they try to do it from the Senate. Bastards!!

Hi Dave!! That was a long one even for new…..
‘First American Prime Minister……’
did I miss something in this post?….
they need to get prison sentence’s to reflect in actual jail time too. I don’t think this bill even addresses that?
do the crime do the time, not half or 2/3 of the time
Kates reference is either to the fact that there is a sponsorship by Warren’s firm of his kids hockey team…nothing wrong with that one…so that cant be it
Or
Something is coming down the pipe that our hostess is aware of…hmm I wonder what it could be.
PMSH needs to keep reminding the electorate that these Senators have no mandate and that they don’t speak for anyone but themselves and their ivory tower dwelling ilk.Speaking of being out of touch, new is under the impression that readers would bother reading or trying to decipher any of his/her long winded rambling posts.Don’t kid yourself, you’re wasting your time, something you seem to have too much of.
or may be she’s another propaganda promoter?
i really shouldn’t say that
So…..I suppose that means that Ralph “I hate Western Canada” Goodale is Iggy’s official representative to Saskatchewan? Now there’s a job worth having!
The folks in Regina Wascana must be so proud.

Prince Charles, his wife to visit 12 Canadian cities
Updated: Sat Oct. 03 2009 9:53:08 PM
The Canadian Press
OTTAWA — Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, will visit 12 Canadian cities in four provinces next month in their first trip to Canada as a married couple. On November 2nd through 12th. Charles and Camilla will travel to Newfoundland, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. Prime Minister Stephen Harper welcomed the visit, saying it is a great honour for Canadians. The trip is Charles’ fifteenth to the country, but first since 2001. It will be Camilla’s first.

I just hate it when you link to the katmeat blog. I always feel like I should take a shower.
Hell must have frozen, ‘cuz I’m about to agree with a Liberal.
From CTV: “Liberal Senate spokesman Marc Roy said …”They [Senators] are there to be independent …”
Damn right. Rob Nicholson needs to do some reading on the concept of a separation of powers (unless like free speech, that’s an American concept with no application in Canada).
The whole point of a bicameral legislature is to have two distinct bodies, independent of each other, hammering out the flaws in draft laws. It’s bad enough that PMs appoint Senators. Bad enough that the House has been reduced to a never-ending war of personality cults among the party leaders, with the other 300-or-so MPs as mere ciphers. But for the Justice Minister to state that Senators must also be subject to the dicates and whims of the Holy Party Leader in the Commons is atrocious.
Nicholson – meet clue-bat.

It’s funny when the CPC has to give Iggy points on how t lead.Usually the MSM offers free advice to the Libs too.
Thanks Kate for directing me to read the ‘mouse-over’.Bottom left of your screen will warn you that Kate has linked to the WK…you can avoid the click if you choose not to be in his zone.
I think the reference to hockey was that WK is probably talking ‘anything but Iggy and the polls’.Those who clicked will have to fill us in.
Lastly…thanks Grant.Point made!.
I read a new post…once.
Now I scroll.
i heard Jack Layton say recently that he would “abolish the senate”.
Wouldn’t that give Harper enough support to do so?
Personally I think it should be kept on but elected?
Layton might go for that.
elected, by the public of course
Add a senator from each party to the federal voting ballot.
easy-peasy
At the top Kate has it up about the CBC report on the “Alleged” Toronto 18 Terrorist ring leader pleading guilty,Now How may yrs will he get? & adding in his time served, How much will he actually serve?.
Liberal Hug a Thug theory in play. Poor criminals we would’nt want them to be inconvenienced in an Over crowded jail now would we. Geezz H ****** does anyone listen to these Liberal Senator’s The House of Second Sober Thought My Ass more like the House of Over the hill bunch of Drunks.
and don’t forget those ‘drunks’ are there ‘for life’. If elected they should have limits same as any other elected politician or abolish them altogether.
the way it is now is unacceptable
Hey Doug,
Do you honestly think that the Liberal dominated Senate really wanted to “hammer out the flaws” in this draft legislation? If you do, I propose it’s you that needs to meet the business end of a clue bat.
When every provincial counterpart to Nicholson agrees with the legislation; every police association, countless community advocate groups, not to mention *four seperate political parties* hammer out workable legislation, it’s not for the Senate, in one day no less, to re-write said legislation.
It’s pure political shenanigans.
Ack! That’s not funny. Now I have to spray disinfect my computer and run the hard drive through the dishwasher.
Thank god NoScipt was active even if the alarm didn’t work.
PM Harper should take the next available public opportunity to once again invite the Provinces to enact legislation that will permit their citizens to elect their Senators for the PM’s subsequent appointment until such time as our Constitution can be properly amended/improved. He should encourage Canadians to contact their MLA’s and suggest that electing their Senators will be a provincial election issue.
Grant, Dave, others:
What’s really amazing is that Kate not only lets “new” post, she doesn’t censor or edit him. God bless him, new does obey the rules: no profanity, no personal attacks. So, even though no one here agrees with him (at least, I think we don’t; that presupposes I understand the posts I bother to read, which is, shall we say, problematic), he is allowed to continue posting.
Now, contrast that to the CBC or the Star – if you post counter to the party line, odds are your post vanishes down the memory hole after a few hours, if it makes on to the site at all.
So who’s really the guardian of free speech? Our media elites, or these rabble-rousing out of control bloggers?
I am personally in awe of Kate.
Even my dog started to growl when my mouse lingered on katman’s site.
“new” is a woman
seems to have an obsession with loblaw hahal food.
she is here by special permission having pleaded her case directly to Kate by phone.
I’m not sure about electing senators?
They do need to get rid of these “lifetime (til age 75)” appointments though.
Scrapping the senate altogether is probably the best but let’s face it the house of commons does need them.
Let the PM appoint them but also let them have term limits. So they at least can’t be there for forty years after their appointment, may be 14 years max., regardless of their age? definitely needs reform, that’s for sure.
blanks:
You miss the point of an upper house. Whether elected or not, it is supposed to act as a counter-weight to the popular lower house. The House of Lords in Britain fills this role; the hereditary peers and the life peers don’t come and go every few years. They are there for some time, and know that that they don’t have to face the public every three or four years for approval.
Look at the US Senate, which is a masterpiece of slow feedback developed a full century before control systems theory developed. A Senate term is six years, but only one third of the seats are up for grabs every two years. As much as some might wish for it, there’s no way that the Republicans will suddenly have 60 seats after the mid-terms. The House can change substantially every two years, but the Senate rocks to a much slower beat.
What we need are fixed Senate terms of a longer time (6-8 years?), whose election dates are specifically fixed NOT to coincide with a general election. Then, people might actually consider the character of the person rather than the fervour of the times when making their decision.
Too bad there isn’t a poll for ingracious ba$tards and biggest internet pussy.
probably if Harper would set some term limits to like 8 or 12 years that would be enough for now and better than the nothing he’s done so far.
Blanks: has has tried to do some reform of the senate but the liberal domination has prevented it. Thus he is midway through a long end run around them by appointing new senators who have made written pledges to approve elected senate legislation (and term limits of eight years). Their will be enough new appointees inplace by spring of next year.
2 more Kinsellas warming the bench; I guess that makes 3. Wait, Warren doesn’t always “ride the pine”. When the game is lost,we send him out to play goon and rough things up, just to let the die hard fans know that the team may be down but its not out.
