  2. We visited a pharmacy later in the trip. Behind the counter five well-dressed Cuban women waited to serve, but the shelves were empty. The only items in sight were the monthly ration of sanitary napkins, 10 permitted per Cuban woman per month.
    Loved this. 10 napkins per month. Hope women have short periods down in Cuba.

  4. I have no love for socialism either, but how much of that is the fault of socialism, and how much is due to bloody minded legislation like the Helms-Burton act? I also suffer from no delusions that Batista and the mob were better stewards of the nation.

    Edward Teach, you know damn well there’s nothing stopping Castro buying whatever he wants from Canada, France, Britain, Germany, what have you. Because he DOES ALREADY. Where do you think all the nice stuff for the tourists comes from?

  8. I spent a week in Cuba,not at a resort,but in what I call Castro’s Cuba. Great people,but ungodly poverty for the great unwashed,and there were many,far too many. My most poignant memories include having dinner with a family where my friend told me not to ask for seconds of chicken because chicken was a luxury and my second piece would have come from the children’s portion. Other deeply etched memories are of wild dogs in the streets doing their breeding, beat-up cars and trucks belching smoke,trying to buy film (couldn’t be done),and a market where the only meat available was pork heads…But that was before Mr.Moore made his film ‘Sicko’,I must have missed that area of Cuba,or things improved greatly after my visit.

  11. I visited Havana in 2000. While wandering aimlessly around the city I happenened to come across a long line-up of excited women in front of a store. Thinking there must be a sale on of some kind, I found myself standing along with the other women only to step into the store and see to my utter amazement that the line-up was to SEE and TOUCH (not buy, because none of the Cuban ladies could afford to)a dozen or so new T-shirts that had arrived at the store. The T-shirts were priced from approx.$2 – $4.

I do know that now, those in Alberta who need treatments, these treatments are rationed and I’ll bet anyone anything that the great unwashed will be staying way down on the bottom of that list. And I feel we are luckier than some, even in Canada.

  14. Prior to Castro arriving Cuba had the largest economy in South and Central America. It had an economy better than Italy. However corrupt Battista was he didn’t turn people into slaves.

    I have friends who go to Cuba periodically and being musicians they always take guitar strings and give them as tips to the band members in the bars they go to. They can’t get them there. The musicians are very grateful for this. One guy was so happy he started to cry.

    This is one of those unlikely consequences that play out in NJ and NY… There seems to be an unwritten practice that allows some Organized Crime to exist as long as they self police the Prostitution/Drug trade in designated areas, and keep the violence among themselves.
    The French had a similar agreement with the Normans…Normans protected France from invaders in exchange for Normandy (part of France) a base for the Norman conquest of all other countries
    Las Vegas was crime free when the MOB owned the Casinos.. Safest city for a tourist.. Very bad for Gangs or petty criminals
    US politicians that are caught stealing, Jailed, released, and then re-elected. It seems that pll prefer someone they know that steals a little to an unknown that may be more evil.
    Cuba got screwed with Castro, and We (US)are next in line.
    I would support Charlie Rangel (an American Black, NYC) regardless of his problems…(He is an American First DEmocrat)…
    The Pelosi/Obama agenda may be be causing Rangel & other Senators problems…do what we say!

  25. A few years ago, I spent a couple of weeks just wandering around Cuba, far from the opulent tourist traps of Veradero. I never saw so many police in any country (and I travelled widely in Latin America in the bad old days) but, I must say that I was never hassled. A few people were obviously afraid to talk to me but, as everywhere, taxi drivers and were usually willing to unload.
    Anyway – back to health care. I did poke my nose into a couple of drug stores, and the shelves were absolutely bare.
    In a small provincial city, I engaged a physician with an ancient rattletrap car to illegally drive me around for a couple of days (his days off from the clinic) for US$50.00. He told me that he and his wife (also a physician) each earned the equivalent of US$25.00 per month. This seemed so improbable that I later checked it out with a taxi driver in Havana who told me that that would be pretty standard, and was about equal to his weekly tips from tourists. (Hint, hint). And yes, it would be possible to live badly on $25.00 per month, as farm produce is incredibly cheap. However, I noticed that the doc’s 6 year old son was wearing a T-shirt with an American logo – obviously from the large quantities of used clothing that U.S. charities ship via Mexico to avoid the embargo.
    Anyway, the good doctor confided that the only supplies that he ordinarily had to work with were bandages and antiseptics. Antibiotics were unheard of, and any sort of pain killer was rare.
    On the other hand, every big tourist hotel has a gleaming well-stocked clinic and a doctor on 24 hour call.

  27. I agree that Cuba is not Texas or Alberta. But why is it that since New Years Eve 1959, nobody has been able to go in there and film an undercover documentry that could have highlighted the shortcomings, and could have been broadcast on national American and Canadian TV?
    I admit that security is tough, but with thousands of latinos who want to become American citizens, surely to God one of them would have consented to shoot and/or photograph some footage “in cognito” in exchange for a bungalow on a Miami crescent, along with a wife and two kids, a Ford Bronco, a 150 HP inboard and a dog name Duke and a cat named puff!
    There seem to be a few chapters missing! I’ve always been interested in finding out what was going on over there, but I must’ve been the only one, as nobody else seemed to care!
    I do remember having a shortwave radio when I was a kid, and listening to extreme right wing activists late at night. They were always going to go in there and “take over,” but it never happened. Kennedy tried, that also failed. I think the Vietnam War, not to mention his assassination cut his plans short.

    The thought of having a car battery hooked up to your genitals 3 or 4 times a day for the next 10 years can really put a damper on that rebel spirit. Not to mention what they would do to your family.

  32. Support the Cubans in a coup against the Castros. Send Michael Moore, Margaret Trudeau and Kim Jong-Il to one of the crapholes for treatment. Leave them there (tear up their passports). Have leftist tree-hugging, Israel-hating universal health-care supporters scrub the floors of these hospitals. Have Micahel Moore film this and put it up on Youtube everyday. Turn on your computers and watch these fools scrub these filthy floors.

  34. Every year, tens if not hundreds of thousands of Canadians, visit the Cuban resorts. These very same people are oh so concerned about food safety and animal welfare and the use of chemicals on their food in Canada. Thanks to them standing on their soapbox making demands Canadian agriculture is strapped with restriction after restriction.
    But these same tourists have no problem-o chowing down at the all inclusive buffet in Cuba(or any 3rd world Caribbean country)and having a bowel full of local grown fare. If the friggin’ hospitals look like that what do you think the conditions are like for animal slaughter and meat storage supplying the resorts? Hypocrites.

    Local (Canadian) socialists like to give the healthcare of a totalitarian regime as an example of well run system.
    You see, local socialist, when they go to see the paradise of their pretend dreams get the service if needed, totally separate from Cuban reality.
    They, the local socialists know that it is a false dream, for if they do not know, that would expose their stupidity and lack of anything resembling common sense. They support it none the less because they have an ideology, full of empty air with a lot of pretend sophisticated rhetoric, much like the current ruler of the US.
    Have known a few people while working, that went to Cuba a few times every year, (cheap seats, spouse employed by Air Canada), they would collect all kind of trinkets from coworkers to give to the children in Cuba. Made them feel superior all the way to heavens.
    An acquaintance couple does the same, had a chat over dinner about the subject and could not believe how good they felt about themselves. When told that they have no clue what they were talking about, as you may imagine, cold chill suddenly became obvious.
    Growing up (me) in a country (in Europe) run by communists, they could not really have an argument to oppose. What is written in the blog is something that I have undisputable first hand experience, about the poverty (not necessary lack of money, rather lack of something to buy) and about the pretend factor.
    The only thing that socialist/communist are good at, is putting on a show, much like Hollywood, until the other peoples money runs out. That is the closing curtain.
    How is it possible that free people, living in land of plenty (in spite and contrary to what some may think, Canada is land of exceeding plenty) can be so ignorant?

  38. If Cuba is such a paradise, why is the immigration traffic all one way? If we believe leftish commentators, Health Care is excellent, infant survivor rates are higher than in the US.
    Why would this fantastic health program not result in some Spanish speaking Americans emigrating to Cuba? The only person I recall travelling the Florida straits illegally towards Cuba was Pierre Trudeau in a canoe.

    Spoken like a true lefty-socialist. While I’m sure embargos like the US one does have an effect(it is supposed to)that’s not the point. The point is that Cuba’s health care system is put forth as such a wonderful system and its not wonderful at all. I have a lefty friend who always extoles the advantages of Cuba’s system and turns out its not true at all. I’ve printed this out for him.

One of my friends and his teacher wife go to Cuba all the time and think it is great but never as I have suggested many times go into the local villages and stores to see what the people really live like. Even when I sent this lefty couple information about Cuba prepared by our CIDA when the Liberals were in power he thought it was just propaganda.
    The US is Cuba’s 10th largest source of goods, primarily medical products, but the US requires cash on the barrelhead for its goods.

  42. The claim about the superior infant mortality rates for Cuba over the US, has been made by so many writers, there must be some statistical evidence for support. I don’t believe it myself.
    Perhaps some UNESCO table at some time made this claim. Can anyone explian it?

What I said was there are other contributing factors to Cuba being in the shitter…that egregious bit of bloody-minded legislation which basically has the largest economy in the hemisphere saying that if you do business with these people, not only will we not do business with you, but we might come after you and your assets with litigation, is going to have a serious negative effect on the economy of that nation, regardless of their ideology. It’s all well and good to say “why don’t they buy stuff from France or whoever?”, but if you’ve got no capital to buy with because you have no trade and therefore no economy to speak of then what are you going to buy those things with?

  49. Edward Teach – Although Cuba would be a hellhole in any case, I actually agree with you about the embargo, on the grounds that the commies could use more capitalism, not less. Mind you, I think it’s been relaxed in the last decade. It bugs me, though, that Americans who travel to Cuba, even from a foreign country (e.g. Canada), are liable to prosecution.
    BTW am I the only one who thinks Fidel is actually dead? I really do. They’re not wheeling him out in public anymore.
