The Sound Of Settled Science

I was sitting around a large table of dog show friends and competitors from across the United States when the topic of global warming came up. Someone argued that the point-zero-whatever degree the earth is said to have warmed over the past few decades was bringing about the collapse of polar ice caps.
I asked how many present had personally experienced -40C temperatures ?
It turned out that I was the only one.
“Well then,” I said, “I can tell you something you probably didn’t know. When the temperature rises from -40C to -35C, nothing melts.”
No, this isn’t exactly the same thing, but it gave me an excuse to tell my little story.

  1. She warms up and she cools down. Been doing that for millions of years before man showed up, before dinosaurs were around and yes, even before- what’s that word- scombridae?? People are so full of themselves.

  2. “from -40C to -35C, nothing melts.”
Yeah, but at -40 when the wind stops, it _feels_ warmer.

  3. I get so confused when I read about the horrors of climate warming changing stuff.
If what these warmists tell us is true that we are on the bring of losing half the earth’s population, why would they want to prevent that from happening. My understanding is that those warmists are the same folks who want to dramatically reduce population.
Can there be a better way that through this sort of global disaster, or were they planning to talk the Muslims and the Chinese and the East Indians to stop having babies?
The white western world have stopped reproducing and during this century many white western cultures will disappear. Starting in Europe and ending in Canada. The USA will take longer because there will be on-going resistance.
Although if they can force enough people to line up for the H1N1 shots, they may be able to affect population reduction that way.
They have already started the process HERE

  5. So if the ice is melting and so the ocean is rising, where are the news stories about people abandoning or building up docks and piers and boathouses and whatnot in Newfoundland? If sea level rising is one of the symptoms of warming, that’s pretty easy to check. Does anybody have family or friends on the coast, maybe give them a call?

  6. I too have been witness to -40 many times.
I find it neat that -40 is the same in Celsius and Farenheit. Take that Trudeau.

  7. I believe it would improve things if it actually warmed up a little, longer growing season etc. I have seen the news storys about Big Al and little Davey ( he hates being called that) buying waterfront, if those two “salesmen” don’t believe “the seas are a’risin'” crap why should I. Just another lefty tax grab income distribution scheme folks, move along, nothing to see here. Kooky was squalling about the next ice age in the 70’s and Oh yeagh we are “running out of oil” too. Chicken-little syndrome! A thousand years ago these two would have had the sheeple throwing virgins into the volcano.

    Or
They would have been offering up Sacrificial Offsets. For a small fee a chicken, sheep, pig, goat or cow would be substituted in your place***.
All Visa, MC and travelers checks accepted.
    Call Big Al at 1-800-SUN-STOP
***This fee of course is in addition to the annual per capita tithe paid directly to the chiefs and priests.

  9. Kate, you are one of the smartest people on the planet. I love how you can deliver a pint with surgical precision.
    Please run for MP.

  10. Meanwhile as I have posted elsewhere today’s weather here in beautiful balmy South Western Ontario….inspires me onto greater efforts with that woodpile behind the barn.
It feels more like October than August.
The Walnut beside my house has been shedding leaves for 2 weeks—1 month early…….
Copenhagen in December is gonna feel real toasty…….

  11. I love how WUWT attracts adverts for all sorts of green-induced junk. Those tools end up paying to advertise with someone debunking them. lolling.

  12. tranio, if you click on the link above, near where it says, “The sound of settled science” the link will take you to “WUWT”
    What’s Up With That?

  13. We used to play hockey in the Yukon at 30 below zero and stopped after 35 below as it was possible to injure your lungs when you were pumping huge amounts of air through the at that temp.
When it was really cold, 40,50,60 below and it would warm up to 30-35 below, everybody was out walking, chopping wood and socializing. Mind you there was no wind at all.
Clear, dry and cold. Not hard to handle.

  14. marc in calgary – it’s actually “Watts up with that” – editor Anthony Watts, former meteorologist.

  15. “editor Anthony Watts, former meteorologist.”
I believe he’d dispute the “former” part.

  16. Key Factors in the Analysis of Manmade CO2 in our Atmosphere and It’s Effect on Climate Change.
    Question:
If Greenhouse gases represent 3% of the content of our atmosphere, and CO2 is measured as 4% of the 6 primary GHG, and with man responsible for producing 4% of the atmospheric CO2 (the other 96% occurs naturally) – What is the effective percentage of manmade CO2 as a factor in the make-up of our atmosphere.
Answer: Rather puts it all in perspective doesn’t it!
    Fact:
METHANE as a GHG is 25 times more efficient than CO2 at blocking Earth’s radiant heat from escaping the atmosphere.
By this measure we should be much more concerned with cattle and other ruminants, and their contribution to the spectrum of GHG than the content of what we exhale. But this is not the case! – Why??? – Well… How do we TAX the entire population of cattle on the planet. Furthermore if we reach a consensus that METHANE and its impact on Climate Change is causative, well then that means we will have to look at every salt-water marsh, rice paddy, swamp and bayou on the planet. (The last time I looked, anything green that dies in water… ROTS and this gives off methane.) But wait a minute! – There is no way we can hold responsible or TAX every plant that dies, afterall, it’s all these plants that scrub CO2 from the atmosphere in the first place (not to mention the hordes of algae and plankton in the worlds oceans). And so the current problem! The cause of Natural Climate Cycles has to be blamed on and rectified (at least financially) by mankind.
Question: So Why Cap and Trade???
Two Reasons: 1) Bureaucracies the world over continue to operate at deficits. New Revenue streams are required and what better source than to literally tax our inherent requirement to breathe or in this case exhale. and 2) Cap and Trade has already gone through its bureaucratic testing and trails during the 90’s with the Caps on Sulphur Dioxide (SO2). Al Gore was witness to the success of this program as VP, in that the program effectively reduced industrial emissions of SO2. It was this program and through the commodity trading of offsets on SO2 that Enron first made its mark as an “up and comer” in the Energy Sector.
    Facts:
CO2 currently measured at 385 ppm is in context a historically low measurement for CO2 concentrations throughout the existence of the planet.
Planet Earth has spent approximately 80% of its existence WITHOUT any Polar Ice-Caps!!
The Historical Record shows that when comparatively tracked, the increase of CO2 concentrations in our atmosphere is a Trailing Indicator (by 600-800 years) to an increase in the Global Temperature. The planet warms FIRST and then CO2 Concentrations Increase.

  17. The WUWT site is one of the best I have found in the war agsinst the AGW cult. Some of the terms and acronyms used can be daunting when you first ‘dig into’ the postings. Don’t let that scare you, the multi-part glossary at the top of the home page helps a great deal as do the sites listed at the side.
Also, sometimes you’ll have to do some independent searching to understand the terms in context but I’ve found that to be rewarding.
The ‘Tips & Notes” section at the top right of the home page is well worth reading as it is updated often and is interesting in its own right.
    I’m hooked on the site.
As well, Climate Audit, climateaudit.org, leads the way in expert statistical analysis of many of the AGW ‘scientific’ findings. The math is well beyond my understanding but , for me, it has been worth the effort to try to understand the arguments presented in at least a rudimentary fashion.

  18. “I love how you can deliver a pint with surgical precision.”
Is there nothing Kate can’t do (incredibly well)?!
    …lol

  19. One day I walked outside of HQ bundled against the -30 C windblown day only to meet a fellow officer standing outside in a light trench coat. I asked him if he was some kind of nut to which he replied, “Oh no I just came from Resolute and this feels like a spring day.

  20. Ice will sublimate at near -40
Glaciers actually grow when the winters are warmer and there is more moisture in the air.Glaciers have to be top loaded to flow. The glaciers in the antarctic are being pushed out to sea as the interior gets thicker. Since its plastic flow it may take years for the effect to be felt.

  21. From the comments in the WUWT glacier thread:
    ‘WestHoustonGeo (22:27:47) :
‘I see this as a scientist extending her conclusion to “accomodate” global warming.
‘There are probably grant money issues to be satisfied.
‘I thank God I work for a private company. They may not publish my results when they don’t like them. But they will,at least, not ask me to lie.’
Puts the supposed freedom of government-funded science in a new perspective, now doesn’t it?

  22. oh yeah Erik, the problem with “thinking” and not reading watt I’m typing… thanks.

  23. damn. i just moved here (battleford) from out west. are you kidding when you say it gets to -40 in saskatchewan!? lol. please, let global warming be real! lol

  24. Anthony Watts did what, evidently, nobody else bothered to do. He and his helpers went to the sites where temperatures are measured in the US and documented what they saw. The results are not pretty. Most of the sites that researchers used to measure “climate change” are compromised by poor location, lack of maintenance, and creeping urbanization. Some sites were moved in closer to offices when the system switched to computers. This shortened the cable needed, but brought the sensor into a warmer environment. Many are near blacktop, concrete, AC systems, and even barbecues. A few are on rooftops! All of Watts’ findings and more are documented at his websites: http://www.surfacestations.org/
His main blog is a great place for info on climate, weather, and the great solar minimum that is now taking place: http://www.surfacestations.org/

  25. Not that I disagree with the big picture argument you state, but that oft quoted value of a 4 degrees Celsius increase in temperature refers to a “mean” temperature increase.
That does not mean that the temperature increase across the world has to be uniformly raised by exactly 4 degrees, but rather, just that the average, net change is +4.

  26. I have quoted this before but Pres.Eisenhaur said two important things, the first was widely quoted “beware the military industrial complex”.The second thing that he thought was equally or even more important and is NEVER quoted was”do not let govts fund university research”.

  27. Rob; you got the 4 degree rise from researchers.Remember the hockey stick. It was a Canadian that debunked that fraud.I should have got a class action law suit going against Suzuki et al as our farm LOST over a quarter million dollars due to an early frost in 2004.The province of Sask lost billions, not due to excessive heat but due to FROST.its inconveniant to raise crops in excessive heat but its impossible to raise crops where there arent enough frost free days.

  28. Joe: “Oh no I just came from Resolute and this feels like a spring day.”
So true! We were once visiting relatives in South Carolina in January — they were all freezing and refused to step outside — into this wonderful, balmy weather.

  29. Joe: “Oh no I just came from Resolute and this feels like a spring day.”
Yeah that reminds me of rolling into Cordelle Ga.(1975) with snow on the ground (1/4 in)in late February—-actually slalloming in from the interstate to the Colonial Inn….getting out without our coats and strolling in—-the staff greeted us with…
“Ya’all gotta be frum Canader…..we can’t drive on this stuff…” (the staff were huddled in blankets.)
Then there was the time on I75 at Knoxville…….

  30. No matter how hard I look at it, I can not see the downside of global warming for canada. I will buy Hummers until i can grow peaches and bananas here in northern BC. If all this nonsense were only true instead of the panic of the year foisted on a gullible public.

  31. “When the temperature rises from -40C to -35C, nothing melts.””
What does that have to do with summer ice cover in the arctic?
Anyhow, the gist of the linked article is beautifully illustrated here.

  32. Staggering around the yard with the arborist in a 75 below wind chill really puts into perspective the days I spent shivering in the 50 degree drizzle waiting for a bus in San Francisco. I had no idea. Now, a jacket remains in the car while I wander around in three-season suits well into the low teens. First, honest to dog, global warming has nothing on menopause. Second, one acclimates more quickly than seems possible.
