Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is Mr. Jose Carreras singing Some Enchanted Evening ¤ ¶, from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1949 musical South Pacific, pursuant to the London production in 1986, Jonathan Tunick conducting (3:31).
| Some enchanted evening, Someone may be laughin’. You may hear her laughin’, Across a crowded room. And night after night, |
Who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Fools give you reasons… Wise men never try. Once you have found her, |
For some value of her.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Here’s some enchanted irony (from the Drudge Report, with Drudge’s caption):
“Gore’s hometown Nashville Breaks 1877 Cold Temp Record…”
More trouble in Iran – only this time, it’s coming from the top. Supreme Leader Khamenei has told President Ahmadinejad to get rid of his newly-chosen vice-president because the fellow isn’t hostile to Israel. And:

This is funny.
Considering one of these warranty places kept trying to get me to extend my warranty but wouldn’t tell me for which vehicle.
I kept grilling them to see if it was my stolen pick up that might have resurfaced.
Frankly? I don’t blame the guy for getting choked at that racket.
Barack Obama’s Brazen Dishonesty [Rich Lowry]
This blog entry on National Review was the best thing I read all day. Can you imagine what he REALLY thinks about BHO?
Turn your up your speakers. At first you may think the sound is not working, but be patient. You will begin to hear the rain in 5-10>
seconds. Amazing!

Barry When you have to bribe the AMA with 245 billion for Medicare fee increases while saying you are cutting costs you have lost the war. Too much, too soon too much lying. I saw to-day his numbers were lower than Carter’s.
Italian Bloggers Strike
But Antonio Palmieri, a Parliament member from Berlusconi’s People of Freedom Party (PdL), said the Alfano law aims at stopping bloggers from abusing the freedom of the internet.
“How would you feel if you were anonymously insulted on the internet every day?” he said.
Palmieri defended the “Alfano” proposal but also said it was written as an emotional reaction. He is working to improve the language of the proposal by clarifying what kinds of blogs and web sites should be liable. Palmieri thinks bigger blogs and online newspapers that affect public opinion should be regulated.
I’ve got the South Pacific DVD. took me a while to find out what ‘road show’ version meant.
I also remember the 20/20 interview with James M Michener and how he related the actual events that inspired him to write the fictional book.
see, I got a LONNNNG memory for events and details.

At the very end, was Carreras apologizing for his performance or praising it? I guess I don’t understand the Spanish sense of humour. I do know that artists who’ve performed brilliantly sometimes leave the stage convinced they’ve screwed up.
Oh yeah, speedy: the bloom is off the obama rose.
But do keep on pushing cap/trade & healthcare reform, dimwitius maximus.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, you are not a cleric, you are an immoral power-hungry gangster, and you are TOAST.
It’s time to arrange a graceful exit, for yourself and the Council of Guardians, before the enraged mobs get to you all. Don’t wait too long!
Vit: You really got me with that song tonight. My Dad loved that song, he used to sing it all the time. Been along time….
Nice musical selection by the way, but I’ve always been partial to the pop version by Jay and the Americans:

Don’t forget to check out “Cara Mia” as well …
This is the end for the phoney “Conservative” (real at one time) Party. Red Ed showed his stripes as a tyrant. Of course we knew this from him giving the provincial inquisitions known as the Anti-Human rights commision. This guy was bad new from day one. Time for booting out this group for Wildrose.
They arn’t talking about a proovincial sales tax. The only real reason people have never voted for the other guys. These people have become to comfortable in power. They are now an entitled group of Aristocrates.
Alberta Premier sticks with decision to fire rogue MP Boutilier

Edmonton Sun Letters:
After reading the Sun’s report that Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo member Guy Boutilier was asked to leave Friday evening after a talk with Premier Ed Stelmach, I am not surprised. Boutilier was representing his constituency and all Albertans. My frequent e-mails to Stelmach on various topics over the last nine months were left unanswered. This majority government, fearfully voted in by a minority of Albertans, is on the loose. Please think of this the next election.
David Belland
(One vote for Guy….)
Kudos to Guy Boutilier, MLA for Wood-Buffalo. It is about time an elected official within the governing party stood up and did his job. Representation of an MLA’s constituents should always be his number one priority. Toeing the party line is not what we elect our members to do. Keep up the good work, Guy.
John R. Winslow
(And another….)
Kudos to Guy Boutilier for doing what the MLAs are paid to do: represent their constituents. It is Ed Stelmach who should be fired for giving himself a 34% raise. It is Ron Liepert who should be fired for his senseless health-care cuts and procrastinating. Let’s not forget the intended closing of eight helipads which the Tories claimed were because of Transport Canada’s recommendation. Premier Stelmach should keep in mind that not all voters forget and I would suspect his dictatorship will end with the next election.
N. Enskat
(And another. We could do this all day. Folks aren’t happy.)
It’s interesting how some people manage to post live links and some people (me, for example) can only manage http://etc. addresses.
Obviously there’s a trick to this. My techno-geek neighbor divorced his wife recently and moved to Croatia (seriously, TO Croatia). Any tips?

I never saw a stage version of the musical South Pacific, but did see the movie version when it came out in 1956-57.
I saw it at the Capitol Theatre in Calgary which still looked a lot like this 1921 photo.
The movie, the story, the brilliant colours made quite an impression on me and I began to go to more musical films and then live musical theatre after that.

WINNIPEG — On the eve of city council’s vote on a proposed water, sewer and power utility, more than 200 people gathered at city hall Tuesday evening to protest the project.
The rally was organized by the Winnipeg Labour Election Committee, said member Darrell Rankin, who is also the Manitoba leader of the Communist Party of Canada.

“Sri Lankan blood on Liberal hands
On Tuesday, the National Post’s Stewart Bell reported on the contents of an intelligence report, prepared by Canada’s Integrated Threat Assessment Centre (ITAC), on fundraising in Canada for the LTTE terrorist group (better known as the Tamil Tigers) in Sri Lanka. The report was formally labelled “secret,” but its general outlines have been no secret in Canada for many years now. Nor, indeed, have Sri Lankans themselves been unaware that the Tamil diaspora in Canada has been a major source of cash for the now-defunct Tigers, a group that for more than 30 years repeatedly astonished the world with its bloodthirsty ruthlessness, its penny-ante valuation of civilian lives on both sides, its assassinations and suicide bombings and its readiness to hold economic development in Sri Lanka hostage to its dream of creating a Tamil dictatorship in the northern and eastern parts of the country.”
“It therefore has become difficult to deny that the protection and sympathy extended to the cause of Tamil militancy until 2006 — most notably, by Liberal politicians — prolonged Sri Lanka’s civil war, and increased the scale of the bloodshed.
Which throws a rather startling new light on recent history. The Conservatives have been much criticized, in a wouldacoulda counter-factual way, for having at one time been willing to commit Canada to a multinational invasion of Iraq. Some of the criticisms are fair; but if Canada had gone to war, it would at least have been Canadians doing the fighting and, no doubt, some of the dying. How much worse was it for the Liberal political leaders who were actually in power to look the other way — for years — while terrorism and destruction, in a country where we have no discernible foreign-policy interests, were bankrolled through extortion and fanaticism on our own streets?
How much worse was it for Liberal politicians to take an active hand, as they did on at least one documented occasion, in appearing at fundraising events where money for racialist revolutionaries in Sri Lanka was procured by an LTTE front group?”

“Paul Martin, Maria Minna, Tamil Tigers
Dining with terrorists
by Judi McLeod, Canadafreepress.com
January 10, 2005
No one should have been surprised that the same Tamils who supply guns to terrorists are collecting money in Canada for the tsunami victims of South Asia.
Long before devastating tsunami waves claimed tens of thousands of souls in Sri Lanka, the Canadian Liberal government had established a record for being soft on Tamil Tiger fundraising.
Both Prime Minister Paul Martin when he was Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament Maria Minna attended a May 2000, $600-a-plate fund raising dinner organized by a front organization for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Genial dinner hosts to Martin and Minna, Tamil Tigers have been pegged as the most ruthless and murderous terrorist group in the world.
Neither Martin nor Minna ever apologized for breaking bread with terrorists, and in fact both were re-elected in last June’s Canadian federal election.”

The world has been gripped with fears of swine flu in recent weeks. In an interview with SPIEGEL, epidemiologist Tom Jefferson speaks about dangerous fear-mongering, misguided, money-driven research and why we should all be washing our hands a lot more often.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Jefferson, the world is living in fear of swine flu. And some predict that, by next winter, one-third of the world’s population might be infected. Are you personally worried? Are you and your family taking any precautions?”

“Democrats Want to Teach You to Die With Dignity
H.R. 3200 is the Democrat healthcare bill.
Let’s back up for a minute. I noted some time ago Jay Rockefeller went on record to say that at some point the government has to decide whether or not you are allowed to receive any more medical benefits if the cost outweighs the potential benefits.
As Mickey Kaus has noted, both Ezra Klein and Matt Yglesias are on record agreeing. Kaus writes:
Democratic blogger Ezra Klein appears to be positioning Dem health care reforms as a way to cut costs, on the grounds that a reformed system will be able to make “hard choices” and “rational” coverage decisions, by which Klein seems to mean “not providing” treatments that are unproven or too expensive–when “a person’s life, or health, is not worth the price.” Matthew Yglesias’ recent post seems to be saying the same thing, though clarity isn’t its strong suit.”

“The video, originally aired in Honduras, has not been previously reported by U.S. [nor the Canadian] media.”
“Ousted Honduran Leader Accused of Theft
Honduran officials are investigating allegations that President Manuel Zelaya and his chief of staff stole millions of dollars from the central bank before the military ousted Mr. Zelaya last month, according to a senior Honduran official, government documents and other evidence.
A security video from the Central Bank of Honduras made available to The Washington Times shows officials entering the bank June 24 and withdrawing large amounts of Honduran currency. The money was driven to the office of Mr. Zelaya’s chief of staff, Enrique Flores Lanza, according to depositions by three witnesses to Honduran prosecutors.
Government documents and testimony by the three say that about $2.2 million was taken.
The video, originally aired in Honduras, has not been previously reported by U.S. media.”

IMO, the diminuendo at the close sank too far into pure falsetto. Carreras could have (or should have?) retained more low-register without sacrificing the intended intimacy. Still, it was a beautiful, beautiful performance. There is nothing like a gifted tenor voice, informed by controlled passion, to cut straight to the soul.
My voice teacher of many years ago claimed to know from mutual friends and acquaintances that Carreras was somewhat insecure vocally. The handwaving at the start of the performance probably stemmed more from nervousness than from an attempt to communicate a desired tempo. Similarly, the excessive diminuendo at the close may have had a similar cause, for letting the voice diminish into a soft but “supported” sound requires (among other things) total confidence on the part of the singer.

“Police tight-lipped about submerged car probe
CTV.ca News Staff
Police in Kingston, Ont., will not confirm reports that three people have been arrested in connection with the deaths of four Montreal women, who were found dead in a car submerged in the Rideau Canal last month.
Kingston police Const. Michael Menor said he cannot “acknowledge or deny” such reports, but said investigators will update the public at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.
A news release from Kingston police issued on Wednesday afternoon said investigators intended to detail “a change in the status of this ongoing investigation” at the news conference on Thursday. Police say they will provide no further details until then.
Zainab Shafi, 19, and her two sisters, 17-year-old Sahar and 13-year-old Geeti, were found inside a black Nissan Sentra submerged in water, near a Rideau Canal lock northeast of Kingston.
Another 50-year-old family member, Rona Amir Mohammed, was also inside the car.”

You would put dogs.com where I have somelink.com above, and you would put the word best where I have thelinkword. Remember to use greater or lesser signs rather than brackets, and no spaces except between a and href.

here it is!
Via Colin @2:01AM.
“If I see a proposal primarily funded through taxing middle-class families, I’m going to be opposed to it,” he said.
It was not immediately clear whether the president was signaling he would accept at least some higher taxes on middle-class families as the price for winning passage.
So the key word above is “primarily”…that means middle-class America will probably be putting into the health care pot, like most of us don’t already pay health insurance. Also, I just heard today that with Obama’s proposed program, once you go onto his proposed government health insurance you cannot come off and back into private health insurance? Even Obama didn’t realize that was written into his program. Does he truly know what his proposed health care program mandates? Apparently not!
Personally, I think that our Congressmen and Senators should be mandated to carry the government health insurance they’re trying to force upon the rest of us. Then, and only then, would we have good government health coverage.
Silly me, I always thought it was Rossano Brazzi singing.
By the way, we won’t be watching reruns of South Pacific on CHEK TV out of Victoria, after the end of August. Apparently a local station in … was it Lethbridge, is on its way out too.
