  1. Forrest Gump comes to mind while reading that story.
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what ‘virus’ you’re going to get…
    or
    Stupid is as stupid does

  2. Well I guess you ought to sterilize me while you are at it because I think it makes perfect sense.
If over 1/2 of the population will eventually get the swine flu, and if it is true that there is a high degree of likelihood that it will eventually mutate into a more serious (deadly) form (based on experiences with past flu epidemics/pandemics), then it seems perfectly logical to intentionally contract a mild form and build antibodies rather than to isolate oneself but risk a more deadly form in the future. Also resistance to Tamiflu has already occurred.
So put me in the camp with the Neanderthals…..
(OK, the real reason is I’ll take any excuse to have a party.)

  3. Wake me when swine flu has killed as many people world wide as regular flu does, in Canada, in one year. Swine flu is not even as bad as SARS. What was the final total on that global pandemic?

  4. Just curious… Are you going to be adding the mentally ill to the list of people you’re proposing to sterilize?

  5. I don’t find the topic humorous. What do you think Jennifer Lynch or Shirlene McGovern would do with the power to force sterilizations on people?
Sorry, but there are certain principles I reflexively stand up for. Freedom of speech is one and this is another.

  6. Right FREE, because we all know that those 15% of hetero’s who are contracting the virus are just lying about it 😉
    Not.

  7. Sean: Kate’s comment shouldn’t be found to be offensive. It is a bit of a running joke that stupid people do things that remove them from the “gene pool”. It in no way questions the sanctity of life.
Kate: On the other hand, FACT’s comments will be offensive to many. Perhaps some additional words should be added to the spam filter.

  8. and yet, and yet, not long ago, relatively speaking, back when Mr Douglas scooped the greatest Canadian prize, it was widely publicized in right wing circles how early in his career he too advocated sterilization of the feebleminded. my feeling was this was a criticism of Mr Douglas.
so which is it o right wing punditry? sterilize them or not? why do you have to put a spin on the whole question which just makes your hypocrisy so obvious?
    Im waiting !!!!

  9. imapopulistnow, it makes sense to you because chances are you are not an epidemiologist?

  10. Kate this is another situation where life imitates South Park. Beware if your kids bring someone named “Old Frida” around the house.

  11. I agree with curious_george; you can’t sterilize all the stupid people. The logistics would be overwhelming.

  12. Ut is a safe assumption that these parties are hosted and attended by the CO2 enviros…..
That being the case why interfere with karma?

  13. curious-george @12:37 (arms crossed, foot tapping…) – All right, all right, yeesh. After careful consideration we’ve decided not to sterilize these people. We’ll just let them carry on editing themselves out of the gene pool, the way nature intended. The benevolent modern state does try to save them from themselves, but cunning and stupidity are not mutually exclusive, and these things have a way of balancing out.
Vitruvius – Hang in there. Cloning technology is just around the corner.

  14. Excellent. There was only one brilliant way to defeat my argument, and that was to agree with it, ergo showing yourself to be not stupid, and thus showing my argument to be wrong. Brilliantly played, Black Mamba, and thanks (after all, I don’t really want to have to think that I’m the only non-stupid person, that would be delusional 😉

  15. “imapopulistnow, it makes sense to you because chances are you are not an epidemiologist?”
Gosh Wendy you are right. I’m also not a climate scientist. Guess I have been wrong to question their judgment too. Excuse me, I gotta work on reducing my carbon footprint. Maybe if I by smaller shoes……..

  16. Homez, you stole my comment with your reference to the South Park episode. I found that one to be profoundly humorous.

  17. so was it my AIDS definition or the truth about the gay orgies? Curious just curious.

  18. > It is a bit of a running joke that
    > stupid people do things that remove
    > them from the “gene pool”.
I’m all in favour of dumb people doing this sort of thing voluntarily.

  19. Vitruvius – Well thank you 🙂
In fact, in order to spare the delicate feelings of certain sensitive souls, I’ve discarded forced sterilization and instead am mapping out a forced-cloning plan for the non-stupid people.
All we need now is power. And cloning machines.

  20. …and I thought truth was the most important thing here.
But only if its PC enough?

  21. Kate – You in the anti-vaccination camp? Because that is precisely what this is…a low-tech vaccination program. Now, granted – I agree…it should be done intelligently: on healthy people who are then quarantined.

  22. unfortunately stupid people do a better job at procreating so there will always be a larger number of them in the gene pool than the smart ones…smarter people tend to remember the whole thing about birth control, quality of life, and the responsibility involved in raising a child in a family of “haves” instead of “have nots”…not that “things” are ever more important then people…
I know I’ll be jumped for those statements but I believe them to be true to some degree and would rather have 2 kids I can devote love, time and energy to while saving to put them through a higher level of education… to have any advantage they can over their peers than to have a brood of 6-8 at the cost of living in Canada today for someone born and raised here (except Quebec where they pay you stupid amounts of money to have more kids to keep up the french population in Canada) Kids I could never support later in life with any higher standard of education or living than my wife and I enjoy today… any child today hoping to buy in Vancouver for example will need his or her parents to help them if they ever want to own anything within reasonible commuting distance here… 1-2 hours in traffic daily from Mapleridge or Abbotsford is not my idea of a worth while place to live and work….many do it but by the time you look at how many hours a year you spend at or traveling to and from work vs. time spent with family you’re better off raising kids in somewhere like Penticton or Peachland then Vancouver…and the jobs there are limited

  23. mred,
I think it depends on how you define stupid. I believe the most ignorant (or to simplify, the stupidest) cohort in Canada is the under thirty, university educated, city dwelling, multicultural loving, moral relativist, however, if you talk to them, they think they’re brilliant.
Also, punctuation, grammar and paragraphs are your friend, don’t forget them 🙂

  24. I don’t think this is a particularly good way to vaccinate say compared to a flu shot which will likely be out by the fall.
Usually the purpose of a vaccination is to have a mild case to avoid a severe case. The idea behind a flu party is to have a severe case to avoid a potentially more severe case.
This brand of flu is not mild. Even though it isn’t killing like the flu of 1919. It is still pretty brutal.
I’m pretty sure my wife had this flu and I did not get it. She did not get tested. I’ve heard that there may have been a similar strain around here 25 years ago so I’m likely immune to this flu.

  25. I agree with “imapopulistnow” 11:26am. I think we should sterilize him.

  26. Trouble is, mred has his point. If an alien biologist comped the breeding rates of lower-IQ humans and compared it with a comp of higher-IQ humans’ rates, it would conclude that a lower IQ tends to be more pro-survival than a higher one.
Before anyone gets ruffled at me, let me say that an alien wouldn’t give a damn one way or another. If dogs had our cognitive power, I’m sure they would be roundly offended by what we conclude about them. 🙂

  27. Black Mamba :
You got it right in one. No one has a sense of humor anymore.

  28. I am in the medical field. Although I have not been promoting “swine flu parties”, I have been advocating the advantages of getting infected now to my family and friends.
I believe that my family and extended family have all been infected by now based on a period of about 2 weeks last month when every single one of us (nearly 20 people) had a day or two of fever, a week of cough, some of the kids had a bit of diarrhea, and no one was particularly sick compared to any other flu in the past. None of us got tested for H1N1 because it wasn’t worth the trouble of going for the testing and there are enough doctors in the family that no one was particularly worried. Still, given that there is no other flu going around at this time of year, and the way this thing went through our family like lightening in 2 weeks, I am certain it was H1N1.
Statistically and historically, it’s definitely an advantage to get it now rather than in the fall.
Being infected is far more effective than an immunization for prevention. Frankly, I’d rather take my chances with this illness than with a hastily prepared vaccine.
Believing that short of isolation from all human contact for the next 3 months you can avoid infection once many thousands of cases are present in the general population is delusional.

  29. I would like to take this opportunity to applaud djb, curious_george and so many others on their leet appreciation skills regarding irony, sarcasm, and satire. Seriously. Why, some of you have even mastered whimsy, an onerous task as joyless as it is involving of serious toil.

  30. Black Mamba:
So sorry, I forgot rule number one:
“Thou shalt not criticize Kate, The One, as She is Infallible and beyond reproach, and her minions have no sense of humour whatsoever.”

  31. Let’s be honest… has there been ANY otherwise healthy person killed by the swine flu?
I don’t see the big deal in this.

  32. These so called world captains of industry that have selected breeding (decline and change the family name) whose children don’t know the order of the planets (watch more TV-3rd Rock From The Sun) when speaking on the radio (David Red Shield) come to mind. Solar system help us when they take over world Corp..

  33. djb @5:24 – Nonsense. I can’t believe what Kate puts up with half the time. But sometimes irony is a thinking person’s default mode. Try it. Life deserves it.
“The literal mind does not understand the ironic mind, and sees it always as a source of danger.” – Christopher Hitchens (see, I don’t always AGREE with him. I just think he’s smart.)

  34. mred
It could be argued that your theory is largely responsible for Canadian healthcare and pension deficits. We do have immigration to balance the kid deficit but I challenge the wisdom of depending on it for our societies survival.
That being said, I too have only two kids so perhaps you can devise a way go halfsees(sp?) so we can reach the 2.5 kid quota.

  35. Well, unusually, without having read the previous posts (OK I will do after posting), I will be contrarian.
First. Swine flu is benine. More people die every year world-wide of “regular” flu.
Second. The Brits, back in the 17th century, realized that they could inoculate themselves against small-pox by getting it at a young age.
Third. As a kid, I was sent around to play with friends if they got any of the “childhood” diseases: chicken pox; measles; German measles; mumps, etc.
Fourth. That I am still here with strong logic is a testament to the wisdom of this policy. I have had every disease except mumps.
Fifth. Therefore, I agree with the swine flu parties.

No Black Mmba, all we need is a sexy babe willing to be my wife and mother of our children 🙂

  37. I agree with “imapopulistnow” 11:26am. I think we should sterilize him.

Sorry, too late. Already got my stupid genes swimming in the pool!
(Actually I’m amazed at how well my brood is doing given this disadvantage from the start!)
