Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

If our leaders had any balls, there would be an embargo. Instead we’re deluged with shoddy made in China crap, our manufacturing suffers, and rich bastards get to come over here and bid the price of real estate through the roof so ordinary people can’t afford to buy into the market anymore.
You never know. That guy may be one of the people Google ratted out to the Chicomm Gov.
They may be proud of themselves.
C’mon a few hundred measly students killed wouldn’t even register on the ‘Overpopulation-O-Meter’ in that pismire empire.
I would like to buy a simple thing like everyday dishes but everything you pick up now in that line is made in China.
No thanks. With their expertise in using the proper paints, I don’t think so.
Please let us have things made in Canada or the USA.
Willing to pay extra.
Jane
+1 Jane. And I want the corporate and personal income tax paid on those items to actually go into Canadian budget, not Chinese.
I think the time is right for ‘nothing made in China’ stores.
That would probably be considered racist even though it has absolutely nothing to do with race, but rather politics and health.
Aren’t we still giving foreign aid to these bastards?
Isn’t mainland China the Obamites’ newest BFF?
To anybody who’s calling for a boycott on Chinese goods.
What’s stopping you?
To anybody who’s calling for a boycott on Chinese goods. What’s stopping you?
Availability of competing products even at higher prices. It is the importers and retailers who need to stop bathing is the highly profitable made in China crap.
Bull$hit.
You’re all the same people that flock to Wal Mart on Sunday mornings to buy your crappy products made in China. Superior products are out there, but you’re all drawn likes moths to a flame.
Put up or shut up.
A. Cooper:
Welcome to my Nightmare!
I don’t shop at WhaleMart, it’s super-sized clientele make it a bit too crowded.
Jane, the style may be too casual for your taste but the old Franciscan china designed and manufactured in California for 50 years was subsequently purchased by Wedgewood in England after Franciscan bit the dust in the ’80s. I have service for a dozen in Desert Rose. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe. Wedgewood has expanded the production of custom serving pieces that are produced in Portugal including color coordinated, abstract coffee mugs. The Wedgewood Group also produces the Apple pattern. It is inexpensive, very durable and available at any department store worth it’s salt.
P. S. Google is run by a pack of unwashed and ethically-impaired gen xers.
SYF, Cooper, et al:
Even the expensive stores stock stuff which is all made in China.
For f’ing sakes, can’t we make stuff in the other 3rd world nations if we want to save money?
Google is getting progressively less useful as they let bidding for search terms overwhelm their once mighty algorithm.
My web enabled phone with a navigator app is far more handy at finding local businesses now. I used to turn to Google Local first and recommend it to friends. Not any more.
Even Redding and RCBS are made in China now. I stick with Lee. Just and example for SYF.
Hey Momar, maybe you should think about the bigoted things you say before you say them. Turns out that you are wrong about Wal Mart and fat people. What is more likely to make poor people fat is overcharging them so they have no money left over for a quality diet.
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2009/0608/024-opinions-retail-health-on-my-mind.html
I used to agree about Wal Mart and china, but then I wanted a fish fryer, and went to Macy’s, thinking I could get a higher priced, but Western produced one. Well, everything in Macys appliance dept I looked at was from China too, despite the higher prices. You have to go to the web to buy Western (I include Japan since they pay decent wages).
Ah, the difficulties that always happen when rhetoric meets reality.
Poor things. Obama would be proud of you.
Here’s a idea.
Plunk down your cash and start manufacturing something. Put your money where your mouth is.

An interesting new search engine, or, newly reconfigured search engine from the good folks at Microsoft. http://www.bing.com
I haven’t any conclusive results as to the political stripe of it yet, but it’s different… it’d be great with me if it was simply politically blind, that is, that it did not shuffle the deck politically placing Kate or others on the right, somewhere down on page 18 of results, or of placing the tolerant lefts depiction of her as public enemy #1..
.
With http://www.google.com the first Kate McMillan image results led to buckdogpolitics / Holocaust Humor and myblahg.com with a foto of noted “white supremacist” followed by the CBC…
With http://www.bing.com the first result is http://www.katewerk.com and further down, some fotos of “MInuteman” …
Pamela Geller’s results seem to be a bit more even… as it should be.
and… Tiananmen square results all include the famous foto of the “June Fourth Incident” interesting too, the still wide range gap between estimated deaths / injuries from said “incident”, and of course, “reality”.
Still, it’d be good to see a commemorative logo,
tim in vermont, fat people aren’t fat because they can’t afford quality food. Fat people are fat because they eat KFC and McDonalds and sit on their asses all day and night watching TV. Junk food costs more than good healthy food from the grocery store.
Off topic but;
Canada’s broadcast regulator has decided to continue its hands-off approach to broadcasting content on the Internet and mobile devices such as iPhones and BlackBerries.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/crtc-keeps-hands-off-internet/article1168987/
As a Chinese-Canadian as well as a Conservative supporter (I am not some left-wing Maoist nutjob), let me give my perspective on the issue.
Certainly the Tiananmen square massacare was a terrible bloody stain in China’s history. However, seeing that China has had a very recent past of instability (go research), if the pro-democracy riots were allowed to occur, a Civil War could have escalated, causing wide-scale deaths. It is a Catch-22 because there are BOTH SIDES to the story. What I’m saying is not politically correct, but it’s the truth.
Also, it’s somewhat hypocritical to single China out for human rights abuses, when other large nations, including the USA (black segregation, destruction of aboriginal lifestyles) have committed grave mistakes as well.
Secondly, indeed, China has many limitations of human rights, such as free speech etc. (heck, they even banned pornography there). But if you compare China just thirty years ago to now, there is a huge difference in terms of human rights and personal liberties — they’ve improved for the better in a large way. Economically, China did in thirty years what took other countries hundreds of years to do. Thus, of course, they’d be lacking in human rights. However, I am a firm believer that with greater wealth, gradual democratic and liberal reforms are inevitable.
Some may say that China’s products are “crap” but this could be farther from the truth. Sure, there are crappy Chinese-made products out there like any other country. But China has the skill and knowledge to make solid-quality products for a low price… something that few countries can do.
If you want to see the growth of China and the Chinese people today, then take a trip to China. It will expand your view of the nation.
Pete the problem is in some neighbourhoods you cannot buy quality food at a decent price. When I travelled in the US I used to buy food at Wal-Mart. It was cheaper and much better quality than was available at the other chain stores like Safeway, Albertsons et al. I had a car and had the choice of choosing between buying 4 of 10 picked over apples or 4 of 75 lbs. of apples. I never saw bad produce or expires in two days at Wal-Mart. I don’t love the place but facts is facts. Poor folks do not have a choice all the time. You can’t always find a grocer but you can find a McD’s.
“But China has the skill and knowledge to make solid-quality products for a low price… something that few countries can do.”
Because they don’t have a billion and a half people willing to work for subsistent wages to keep themselves and their families alive.
I have no doubt they can and do build quality products. Problem is, most products find their way onto North American shelves due to their bottom line cost–not quality of manufacture.
And we as a society are more than willing to snarf said products up in our rampant consumerism.
Momar, get bent.
Lots of politically correct humorless people here today.
Most humor is the expense of the misfortunes or accidents of others. Think slap stick someone turns with a 2×4 and hits someone else in the head. Someone falls into a mud muddle … stuff like that. Perhaps you can imagine a few more. The Marx brothers did a lot of that and so did Larry, Moe and curly Joe (or Shep depending on your age).
Have you never sat around with some buddies and told stories about bad shit that happened to people and laughed about it? That is human nature. It’s not evil, it’s just what people find humorous.
There is no humor in the Muslim world, maybe some of you humorless people belong there. Fat people look funny. If they don’t want to look funny, they can stop pigging out. I doesn’t cost anymore to eat healthy food than fattening food. All you have to do make the effort to learn the difference and maybe learn to cook. Lazy people are often fat and now you know why. They like prepared junk food, it’s easy to get and eat, no effort required.
I am sorry if your feeling are hurt because I had the ‘audacity of humor’ in this string.
I would never make fun of a person who had no cure for any ailment that made them look unusual, but being fat is a choice.
There are very few fat people in India or China or Africa, because they don’t yet have that choice. Obama is working hard to give it to them at our expense.
Lighten up. It is the shutting down of humor that will bring us the cold empty world the leftists and many Muslims are trying to impose upon us.
Don’t be a useful idiot in that cause.
Problem is, despite your long-winded rationalization, the statement was NOT funny.
The Geitner joke the other day: ‘I just flew in from America and boy, are my taxpayers tired’ is funny.
Making fun of physical appearances is not funny … and I’m not even a lardo.
“lardo?
You make my point. That is a funny description of a fat person.
Further, and I am sorry to stray off topic here.
People make fun of:
Prince Charles ears .. Obama’s too
Jimmy Durante’s nose
Martha Raes large mouth
Mary Feldman’s eyes
Gene Wilders hair
How about the humor of Laural and Hardy AKA Fatty and Skinny.
There is no end to the making fun of dumb people. You know, hillbilly types and the Abbot and Costello duo where Costello is continually made to look dull witted and stupid and everyone laughs. Is that just an echo of a former culture or is humor not a constant in human nature?
The list goes on. You need to assess what humor is and decide what is funny for yourself. One man’s humor is another man’s misfortune, or your case another man’s insult.
Ezra has spent over 100 grand fighting for our right to insult.
I think you will lose this debate. Your political correctness is NOT FUNNY.
Mazzucelli
Before you go getting exited about todays Wedgewood, the company merged/was bought by Waterford a few years back and then went into receivership in 2008. It was bought out by a US/NY investment group, any stuff now is made in Indonesia I think for the same reason as others make it in China. Interesting to have a quick read of the history though. Everything is made out East these days I worked out in China back in 2001 an eye opener back then, and as for quality they do that as well, its whats called re-packaging thats whats done in the West so the folks will buy it. I just turn over this here Macbook Pro and it says … yep made in China, and anyone using an IBM Thinkpad/book thats owned by the Chinese as well as made by them.
The west was told but didn’t want to listen over a decade ago, hey we don’t have a manufacturing base any more we are a civilization in decline right now we are just reaching the exponential stage. Move over Western culture Next civilization on the stage ….
narr you don’t need me to tell you that.
Geitner will recieve a lump of coal from the chinese for his efforts and this is the deserved disdain well deserved. Most favored nation status was purchased on a fire sale from Bill. The USA is just a sphere of influence of the Empire;a client state, an impoverished foolish one.
Well, ya don’t expect them to bite the hand that is currently feeding the entire country do ya? The Chineese are going to pay for that shiny new FREE healthcare system that Obama is working on. Google, the huge Obama supporter, is in no position to piss off China. And neither is Obama. I’m waiting for the China appology tour which must be in planning now.
A Cooper said “You’re all the same people that flock to Wal Mart on Sunday mornings to buy your crappy products made in China.”
Just cause your mom and dad do that don’t assume everyone else does. I don’t know anyone who shops at Walmart.
And when you make juvenile blanket statements like that it shows you don’t want to discuss things rationally. It also shows you don’t know how to form a thought let alone form an argument.
If you want to make a point try making a point. If intellectually you can’t put up then you should probably shut up.
Has the Globe and Mail shut down the comments to their articles? Where are these pinheads coming from?
A. Cooper: shut up.
I do not flock to ANY g-d- mega-store to buy cheaply made Chinese wares produced by teen-aged Chinese farm girls who get ritually abused and mistreated by companies frightened by Canadian unions.
FACT: the Chinese will not buy toys made in their country.
FACT: virtually everything made for Canadian children is made by slave labour in Third World countries with no safety or labour standards.
You’re welcome to go to Wal-Mart on Sunday, A. Cooper, and see for yourself.
Don’t know anybody who shops at WalMart?
Wow.
“I don’t know anyone who shops at Walmart.”
You either live in an area without a Walmart or you know a lot of people who like paying too much for tp.
Anyway, Hi Gord, I’m Kathryn. Pleased to meet you. Now you do know someone.
Of course we won’t see that. Google doesn’t want to offend the murderous Communist Party.
And it doesn’t matter where we shop. I can’t find a place that doesn’t sell Chinese-made crap. It’s everywhere we go; can’t avoid it. Like the Left!
If politicians had balls, Communist-oppressed China wouldn’t be allowed to sell us anything, not even oolong tea.
Throw out the tyrants and make China a democracy with freedom, democracy and the rule of law for all, then we can do business. That would be my policy.
A. Cooper
I call BS on you bud, I pay top dollar for the best, you get what you pay for.
Quality tops cheap with me every time.
I eat only new Zealand apples,Israel Artichokes, prime cuts of Alberta beef, thick cut slow smoked Canadian bacon, free range chicken and eggs.
I buy V8’s for comfort and performance.
I drink Tangle ridge or crown royal rye.
I smoke kush or indica, never sativa.
I put high octane in my tank at 1.16 a liter.
My rims are BOSS.
My tires are Yokohama high performance.
My tools are craftsman, crescent and estwing.
I buy from democracies that compete on a level playing field because to do otherwise puts my fellow countrymen at a disadvantage and out of work which hurts us all.
My famous rant at work because of where a small amount of our gear comes from is ..Chinese shyte!! because it is off on length ever so much one way or the other, splinters the galvanizing which becomes flying projectiles and just does not fit right, it’s crap to work with.
No standards=no quality, with consumer goods as it is with life.
you get 80 yrs or so if your lucky, use it wisely for yourself and those seeking to make a living and live free after you are gone.
“Anyway, Hi Gord, I’m Kathryn. Pleased to meet you. Now you do know someone.”
Nice to meet you Kathryn. You are free to shop where you like for whatever you like. I wouldn’t pass judgment on you for that. I actually don’t know anyone who shops at Walmart. Maybe I do but I don’t know where anyone at work shops. Beer Store and Liquor Store. Gun Shop and Harley dealership. Yes. Walmart. Maybe.
I’m always taken aback by people (not you) who assume that because I vote conservative I play golf, wear a tie, and go to church.
I hear you can get socks and underwear cheap at Walmart. Maybe I should drop in.
Durward
I’m with you on that.
You get what you pay for.
I’m gonna break one of Kate’s rules and comment a third time. Osumashi and Gord: I will not shut up. Unless you’re one of the odd commenters here who live the luddite lifestyle, you have or know someone who has shopped at Wal Mart or their many equivalents out there. Quit acting so piously.
I happen to deal with this issue every single day. The influx of cheaply produced merchandise that floods todays market has forced me, as a retailer, to follow along or be left behind. Now, I can (and have) set myself apart in customer service, and quality of product, but to the majority of consumers all that matters is bottom line price. I am forced to follow along today, where a mere fifteen years ago “Canadian made” meant something.
The main point is that if you don’t like to see things like Tiananmen, give some thought to your responsibilities as a consumer. Furthermore, pick any room in your house. Now count the number of items made in China.
Hence: put up or shut up.
No, A. Cooper. YOU shut up.
In order to declare someone a hypocrite or claim they live “piously” (as you put it), you would have to prove they are, not say it.
I’ve been forced to go without things because Chinese made stuff is inferior and is definitely made by slave labour.
For your information, I’ve been boycotting Chinese made crap since I could walk.
If we don’t like how China has its grubby fingers all over the globe, why don’t we stick it to them?
If you as a retailer don’t like the inferiority of Chinese made rubbish and the cost it takes to import that to your store, speak up yourself.
A Cooper said ” Osumashi and Gord: I will not shut up. Unless you’re one of the odd commenters here who live the luddite lifestyle, you have or know someone who has shopped at Wal Mart or their many equivalents out there. Quit acting so piously.”
I’m not being pious. And I’m not a Luddite by any stretch of the imagination. I told you the truth. You could frame your argument better maybe without the attacking accusing tone you have and maybe develop a bit of a conversation.
Maybe you’re having a problem with your customers because every time they come in the store you yell at them because you think they went to Walmart last Sunday.
Buddy, I don’t want to bore you but I sat in with major Canadian corporations, at head offices, with the presidents, vice presidents and owners 15 years ago and listened to them discuss Walmart. I know what’s going on. I don’t need you accusing me of being the bad guy here when I probably know more about this than you could ever imagine. More than you’ll ever know.
The trouble with people like you is you go around pointing the finger at everyone. Even when they are on your side. You make enemies. On purpose. Then you wonder why you have no friends. Then you can be even more miserable.
Sod off.
Good lord, I’ve found the two people in the world who don’t buy into bottom line consumerism. And they post at SDA no less.
Forget it guys. I tried to make my case and tie it back into the topic at hand. (you know, the actual point of Kate’s post?)
It’s lost on the likes of you two.
“As a Chinese-Canadian as well as a Conservative supporter (I am not some left-wing Maoist nutjob), let me give my perspective on the issue.”
John, I think your post has some good points – I certainly don’t wish hardship on the Chinese people (they’ve had enough in the past), which is what any boycott of Chinese goods would produce. Also, the net affect of importing Chinese goods has given Western consumers benefits through greater purchasing power. Maybe we should take a step back and ask ourselves “how is China trending?”, and more importantly for us, how are we trending?
All of this said, my heart goes out to the Tiananmen victims and their loved ones.
Funny you guys should mention WalMart and the weight of its customers.
Just 10 minutes ago, my wife and I came in the door after making our annual trek to one of these stores. The one at Eglinton and Warden had so many baby elephants walking around that we started giggling. Everytime we turned around, there was another person of Grimacean proportions hobbling by.
Some were actually wider than they were tall. Either that, or they were smuggling fully inflated swim-float rings out of the store, under their clothes.
And pretty much everyone within striking distance of the in-store McDonald’s had either one of those “I’m so fat I can’t walk anymore” Costanza scooters, or was wearing sweatpants.
Needless to say, there wasn’t much interest in the Carmen Electra Workout Videos, even at $10.
Mao Stlong say, gleetings.
Jean and Moi good buddies since 1946.
Say hi to my nephews, Bob/John Lae. Ciao.

Remember when “Made in Japan” was equated with cheap crap? Everything is cyclical, even world development. Chances are the whole lot of you are using the internet right now thanks to electronics made off shore. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
btw, Wallymart does also carry stuff that isn’t all crap.
A Cooper “Forget it guys. I tried to make my case and tie it back into the topic at hand.”
The only case you seemed to want to make was that everyone on SDA shopped at Walmart and if we said otherwise we were liars. Except for you of course.
I can only assume your some rich kid from the suburbs where everyone you know shops at malls or big box stores.
Why wouldn’t you start the discussion with something like “a lot of the people who complain about these things shop at Walmart themselves”? See? Then we could discuss this.
Your attitude is “everyone’s an a*hole and a liar except me”.
The whole Walmart vs local thing is something I would like to discuss. Like I said I know a few of the inside dynamics of this. I’m no expert though. Too bad your lack of social skills prevents you from having an educated discussion. Especially in an area where you profess to know so much.
You might want to get out of retail though. Find something that suits your temperament more. Might I suggest dog walker, house sitter, bomb squad, small engine repairs,
Have a nice day.
