Your posting was timely because just a few days ago I was discussing the very issue with a Canadian friend of mine who lives in Seattle. I was point out how so many on the Left prefer to rewrite history than dealing with what really happened and what were the realities back then. 🙁

Attended a lecture given by Dr. Gary Mauser at the University of the Frazer Valley. This is an introduction Quiz at his site. **http://www.sfu.ca/~mauser/quiz/gunquiz.html** After WWll, many of the allied countries including Canada organized militias to guard against invasion. (A “militia” is an organization of civilians who are not in the regular forces or Reserves. They usually supply their own arms.) Gun control began as a campaign to stop this.

“Well, Earth Day, this week, and here are some words of doom and gloom from leading scientists, academics and authors on our climate and environment associated with Earth Day,” Dobbs said. “Journalists Peter Collier wrote, ‘One to two million people per year will be starving to death during the next 10 years.’ Biologist Paul Ehrlich claimed that most people are going to die in ‘the greatest cataclysm of mankind.’ Harvard biologist George Wall said, ‘If we don’t take act now, civilization will end between 15 or 30 years.’ And ecologist Kenneth Watt claiming that in 15 years, ‘Air pollution will reduce the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one- half.’ I want to point out if I may that each and every one of those quotes were from the first Earth Day in 1970, nearly 40 years ago.”

“NatGeo: Sun Oddly Quiet – Hints at Next “Little Ice Age”?
Anne Minard for National Geographic News
May 4, 2009 A prolonged lull in solar activity has astrophysicists glued to their telescopes waiting to see what the sun will do next—and how Earth’s climate might respond.
The sun is the least active it’s been in decades and the dimmest in a hundred years. The lull is causing some scientists to recall the Little Ice Age, an unusual cold spell in Europe and North America, which lasted from about 1300 to 1850.
…
But researchers are on guard against their concerns about a new cold snap being misinterpreted.
“[Global warming] skeptics tend to leap forward,” said Mike Lockwood, a solar terrestrial physicist at the University of Southampton in the U.K.
He and other researchers are therefore engaged in what they call “preemptive denial” of a solar minimum leading to global cooling.”

CIA fight with Obama
Some exerpts
“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held two hush hush meetings with CIA Director Leon Panetta and Democratic members of the Intelligence Committee last week.
“Her fear and frustration have apparently given way to panic after word reached her of the CIA’s reaction to the damage she, President Obama and other Democrats have done to the spy agency in the last three months, wrote Jed Babbin, a former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense, in Human Events May 1. “Pelosi learned that her actions and those of President Obama have so damaged CIA morale that the agency’s ability to function could be in danger.”
“The upshot of the meetings was an unprecedented letter from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-Tex) to Mr. Panetta, making a quasi-apology. Rep. Reyes asked the CIA director to “disseminate it to the CIA workforce as soon as possible.”
“But the CYA nature of the letter, and Mr. Reyes’ pledge of more oversight are unlikely to mollify many at Langley.
Other Western intelligence services regard the Obama administration with contempt and rising concern, an officer of the DGSE, France’s military intelligence agency, told my friend Jack Wheeler (the real life Indiana

“All of us in our little community are worried — us, our friends in Berlin, London, Tel Aviv,” the DGSE officer told Jack. “It is not like the barbarians at the gates. It is every barbarian horde in the world being told there are no gates.”
Libranos in blue ties. Bonus points for anyone who can name the people on the party dole….(c’mon, all appointments are on merit…right?)
OTTAWA – A spokesman for the Conservative government says three civil servants are still busily preparing the way for the eventual creation of a blue-ribbon panel — three years after the phantom commission has already cost taxpayers at least a million dollars.
Pierre Poilievre, parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, was reacting to a report the government has spent $1 million for support services for a public appointments commission without ever creating the body.
“We continue to make appointments based on merit and the government is currently laying the groundwork for the eventual establishment of a public appointments commissioner,” Poilievre said in the House of Commons yesterday.
In both the 2006 and 2008 election campaigns, the Tories promised to create a public appointments commission to help purge patronage from the appointment process and to ensure plum jobs are handed out in a fair and equitable manner to qualified people.
But in May 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s nominee as chair of the commission, Gwyn Morgan, was voted down by a Commons committee. Opposition MPs objected to his past as a Tory fundraiser and his public comments disparaging multiculturalism.
The Harper government has never revived the commission, despite a renewed promise to do so in the 2008 election campaign, but has continued to pay as many as four public servants to support the non-existent body.
In the meantime, the government has made an estimated 1,000 appointments.

Take stake in Air Canada, union urges government
By Scott Deveau, Canwest News ServiceMay 5, 2009
Less than a month after griping about the federal government “interfering” in its talks with Chrysler Canada Inc., the Canadian Auto Workers union appears to have done an about-face in adopting a new strategy for its negotiations at Air Canada that leans heavily on government intervention.
With a tense round of labour talks slated for this month, the CAW, which represents 4,500 Air Canada’s sales and service agents, has called on the government to help bring the airline back from the brink of bankruptcy and help bolster its balance sheet by taking a stake in the airline like it has in the financial and auto sectors.
“Air Canada’s privatization has been a disaster for everyone, including investors,” CAW president Ken Lewenza said Monday. “For us, Air Canada is not just a company, it’s a public service.”

‘Low likelihood’ Chrysler loans will be repaid
Billions in financing from Canadian governments likely gone, bankruptcy court hears
SINCLAIR STEWART AND SHAWN MCCARTHY

NEW YORK AND OTTAWA — Canadian and U.S. governments aren’t likely to recover much, if any, of several billion dollars in bankruptcy loans to Chrysler LLC, an adviser to the embattled auto maker conceded yesterday.
“The Recession Is Over (Indicators point to a fast-approaching end date: May 2009)
If you want a bone to pick–or an economic argument to have–it should be about when the current recession actually began. The National Bureau of Economic Research, the U.S.’s semi-official recession arbiter, says it started in December 2007. But real gross domestic product grew at 1% annual rate from then through August 2008. That doesn’t look like recession to us.
Nonetheless, when Lehman Brothers ( LEHMQ ) collapsed and the $700-billion TARP plan was proposed, a very rare “panic” ensued. Monetary velocity collapsed. From September 2008 through March 2009, the economy shrank at a rate of 5.5%. That’s why we think the recession started in September 2008, not in December 2007.
Once the “real” recession started–the one that began in September–we consistently forecast it would be over by mid-2009, earlier than many (including the Federal Reserve) predicted. Now it looks like our V-shaped recovery is underway. When the NBER eventually gets around to declaring the recession end date, we think it will be May 2009.
New claims for unemployment insurance are probably the very best single indicator of the end of a recession. The monthly average for claims normally peaks one or two months before the economy bottoms–and it appears to have peaked in March, at 658,000, versus April’s 635,000.
Also, given that the September recession was marked by consumer spending falling off a cliff, we look at this measure to signal a rebound. Consumer spending grew at a 2.2% annual rate in the first quarter, and it looks set to rise again in the second quarter. Meanwhile, both major measures of consumer confidence (from The Conference Board and University of Michigan) shot upward in April.
The housing market is also showing nascent signs of life. New home sales bottomed in January at a 331,000 annual rate.”

The Compassionate Left

“OBAMA AND THE NEO-MARXIST LEFT: The Clever Manipulation of Projection and Paranoia
In, “The Necessary Enemy”, Dr. Zero at Hot Air has identified the crucial psychological defense that is required for collectivism:
Collectivist politics of any stripe requires enemies, because they rely upon coercion. Socialist utopias don’t come into existence spontaneously. There would be no need for confiscatory tax rates on the wealthy, if the wealthy voluntarily used their money to buy cars and houses for everyone in the lower income brackets, without requiring them to work in return. Nobody would be talking about nationalizing health care if doctors and hospital staff were happy to work eighty hour weeks for minimum wage, and pharmaceutical companies were run as giant charities that cheerfully sank billions into developing drugs they resell at cost. Few people would leave a sizable chunk of their estates to the government, if the government didn’t seize the money through death taxes. No large group of people on Earth has every freely chosen to peacefully organize themselves into a socialist collective – they either slip into it through small losses of freedom that seem relatively painless as they happen, or they are forced into it at gunpoint. If Franklin Delano Roosevelt had proposed Obama’s current budget and regulatory plans at the outset of the New Deal, he would have been laughed out of office, and if he had attempted to impose Obama’s policies by force, he would have needed infantry platoons and tanks.
The basic premise of socialist government, as Obama famously explained to a plumber in Ohio last fall, is to take wealth away from the more successful people in society, and “spread that wealth around.” This will always be a more attractive proposition to the people serving as the bread, than the people being used as the peanut butter. The creators of wealth must be forced to participate in the system, far beyond the point where a sense of civic duty or compassion for the downtrodden would keep them in line. After all, nearly half the country currently pays no income taxes, and they’re not all “downtrodden” people deserving of charity. In fact, the socialist dream is to reach the point where over half the population pays no taxes, and will thus be inclined to support all expansions of government power. You can’t get to the magic 51% of tax dependents just by using hungry orphans as props.
Increasing levels of coercion are necessary to expand the socialist system, and keep wealth producers trapped within it. To maintain popular support, the socialist needs voters to stay angry at designated class enemies. The Obama style of total government control over private businesses tends to turn feral with frightening speed, because it attempts to preserve the illusion of private enterprise, even as the “entrepreneurs” are enslaved to the total state.
The psychological defense mechanism being described is projection (which, with just a little psychic push can become full-blown paranoia).
The beginning of the 21st century will surely be looked back on as a golden age of paranoia. The headlines of today fairly ooze with the delusions and vast conspiracies dreamed of in the mind of the paranoid left.”

Bear Head deal was political ploy, inquiry told
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA — A former Tory cabinet minister says a tentative understanding reached in 1988 on an armoured vehicle project being pushed by Karlheinz Schreiber was a political compromise with no real weight.
Senator Lowell Murray told a public inquiry today that the understanding in principle on the Bear Head project was signed with an eye to a looming federal election.
The Bear Head deal never came to fruition, but it lies at the heart of the inquiry into business dealings between Schreiber and former prime minister Brian Mulroney.
Murray said the aim of the agreement was to keep the door open for a possible future deal to build German-designed military vehicles in Canada.
Click here to find out more!
But the preliminary document put off any real decisions until after the election Mulroney’s Conservative government was about to fight in the fall of 1988.
Murray said it was “ludicrous” that the non-binding understanding was later used to justify the payment of millions in lobbying fees to Schreiber, one of the chief promoters of the project.
Schreiber in turn passed along over $600,000 to a number of Canadian lobbyists — including $90,000 to Fred Doucet, a former aide to Mulroney…”

“Sorry, Al Gore, but Public Cares About the Economy, Not Global Warming
He admits that “it’s counterintuitive,” but Gallup Poll Editor Frank Newport says he sees no evidence that Al Gore’s campaign against global warming is winning. “It’s just not caught on,” says Newport. “They have failed.” Or, more bluntly: “Any measure that we look at shows Al Gore’s losing at the moment. The public is just not that concerned.” What the public is worried about: the economy. Newport says the economy trumps the environment right now, a strong indicator that President Obama’s bid to put a cap-and-trade pollution regime into operation isn’t likely to be politically popular.
That’s not to say people aren’t passionate about the issue. But it’s the direction of their passion that will disappoint Gore. Newport says that some 41 percent believe global warming claims are exaggerated, and “that’s the highest we’ve seen.” Ask people to name their biggest concerns, and just 1 percent to 2 percent cite the environment. “The environment doesn’t show up at all,” says Newport.
“It’s Al Gore’s greatest frustration,” says Newport. “We seem less concerned than more about global warming over the years. . . . Despite the movies and publicity and all that, we’re just not seeing it take off with the American public. And that was occurring even before the latest economic recession.”

“Canadians ‘feistier,’ ready to battle world: poll
A significant majority of Canadians are willing to risk friction with other nations in pursuit of this country’s interests, according to a new survey that suggests Canada has “grown feistier” about its role in the world during this decade.
The poll of 1,600 Canadians, commissioned by the Montreal-based Association for Canadian Studies, found 67 per cent of respondents agreed with the statement: “Canada should follow its own interests even if it leads to conflict with other nations.
“This contrasts with 49 per cent in 2003 who agreed with this view,” notes the study of Canadian attitudes towards the country’s place on the global stage, prepared by ACS executive director Jack Jedwab.
The findings indicate Canadians have “grown feistier when it comes to defending their interests on the international front,” the study states.”

Thanks very much for that link Bryceman and thanks for the song Gunny99.
The schools of today do not teach the FACTS about WWII. Schools teach obedience to social norms- PC behavior; nothing else.
The Greatest Generation, who fought WWII, were tough and able and knew a lot about surviving hardship because they had grown up during the Dirty Thirties; they were also kind and compassionate because they identified with those who had nothing. The capacity of these incredible people for selfless righteousness and courage is almost unknown in today’s world so dippy fools like Stewart, cannot understand the motives of the people who saved his sorry skinny behind from a fate worse than death – slavery.
In Canada, people who ‘stayed home’ from the horrors of war and prospered from war production(like PE Trudeau and the Power Corp gang) were made to feel ‘threatened and feeble’ when those soldiers came marching home with all the power and glory allotted to victorious soldiers. The soldiers were a force to reckon with because the bigshots found out that they could not kick these men around as they had been accustomed to doing during the thirties when men were forced onto breadlines. The cowardly ‘elitists’ had to make these soldiers feel their wrath and knuckle under or the ‘people’ would pose a real threat to the ‘elitists’ power over the people! The msm and the cowards in the Liberal Party of Canada staged a propaganda ‘war’ to make these courageous men and women feel guilty and mean and small by perpetrating the idea that the soldiers had been guilty of killing ‘innocent victims’, on purpose; without a moral reason, during the course of the war. (Same propaganda that Stewart was spouting about Truman – never addressing the fact that those ‘innocent victims’ were fighting with the soldiers who killed our boys and who would have been booting us off our property and lining us up to shoot us if the other side would have won the war )
When Turdo was allowed to run this country (I blame women and eastern type males for that disaster), the force of evil (Bolsheviks) clashed headlong with the forces of good (Freedom). The vets of WWI and WWII were the chosen cannon fodder for the Liberal (Turdo) assault. Thank the Good Lord that Eric Nielson (a fighter pilot from WWII) took the feeble, cowardly turdo to task for his cowardly behaviour more than once, and curbed the forked tongue of the shyster, Turdo. Eric saved what is left of our freedom, in Canada.
My Mom was in the RCAF, in London, during WWII; many young soldiers she knew were killed fighting for our Freedom; and, by default, for ungrateful, lily livered snobs (like the PET). Those boys did die and the evil media has made my Mom (she is almost 90) feel guilty for being involved in a War that killed these bright eyed young men and accomplished nothing; in the light of the perception that no lessons were learned. Mom does not feel bad that so many Japs/Nazi’s were killed; she feels sorrow for the young men who died too young. It was hard to argue that point when the Liberanos were in power.
The Baby Boomers were growing up when Turdo ruled the roost and Turdo and all his backers fueled a propaganda war against all the vets and the vet’s supporters- Turdo was successful because he ran a campaign against the very powerful men and women who won WWII.
As the daughter of WWII vets, I know that the powerful, ‘can do’, morally upright, decent real men/women of the Greatest Generation intimidated and ridiculed anything they perceived as limp wristed in their sons. “Stand up and be a Man’ was the answer to a lot of complaints. The sons of soldiers resented and could not compete with their fathers legacies so they ‘hated’ their Dads. Women, who married soldiers got sick of war stories and men drinking at the legion with old soldiers who were much closer to their husbands than they were, resented the war too and these women sided in with the likes of Turdo and sympathised with their sons and some daughters against their husbands and men in general. Women and rebellious baby boomers and cowards voted for Turdo. Canada choose not to elect Robert Stanfield – a man very much like our present PM, Stephen Harper. North America would have never sunk this low if we had chosen a different path, here in Canada, at that juncture in History.
Because my Mom was a country kid, who grew up in the wild Cypress Hills, in a family that took care of themselves and had a Dad who fought anything ‘from the gument’, all his life; she had a different take on things and she joined the Air Force to help the men fight the threat to Freedom. When she came home from the war, she found no allies with the women who had stayed home; they lumped her in with the men who, the msm said, had ‘slaughtered people for money and power’. The msm of Canada, with the Turdo gument, fueled the anti war fervor on the TV and in the Air Waves and newspapers with traitorous propaganda and Mom railed against it with Dad. Consequently, my brothers were not wimps and neither was I but we ‘paid’ for our opinions with the scorn from the children of the people who ‘didn’t like war’ and our ‘Turdoized’ teachers.
Most of my parent’s friend were supporters/soldiers of the war and when they got together it sent a wild emotion of powerful nationalism through the spirits of us kids – we all fought the Japs and the Nazi’s and the Bolsheviks all the time. My brothers and I all knew how to shoot and drive and hunt before we turned 12. My parents expected us to be competent and capable.
We were yelled at for any minor infraction with real guns and knew that there would be hell to pay if we were careless with a gun. My brothers had a arsenal of toy guns and tanks and they fought wars with their ‘artillery’ all the time.
In the days when I was young Mom and Dad agonized over the Americans ‘stealing’ all the Canadian soldier’s war stories because Canada would not honor Canadian soldiers (the media elites had stayed home and they envied and resented soldiers; they would NOT tell soldier’s stories in a positive light because it would not help the interests of the ‘cowards’ who stayed home and had no war stories of their own).
So the soldiers of Canada were plagued by their stupid kids listening to the media, the media calling them brutes and killers and saying war was all the fault of USA, Canadian right wingers, Great Britain and the Free World; Russia and Japan had superior people and systems of government and the soldiers in Viet Nam were freaks and baby killers….. and their own gument elected by those who ‘stayed home’ and benefited from the courage and blood shed by the very people they were attacking.
Now we have the Owe in USA – a lily livered coward like Tudo, running the last outpost of Freedom on the globe. TRAGIDY
And we have vets, like my Mom beaten down by the pacifist shriekers in Canada, ashamed to admit that she was part of the war for Freedom fought by the greatest generation of people, who ever lived on this earth. It makes me furious to see our defenders of Liberty ridiculed by the insipid msm, the Owe and the Canadian Troika of Traitors.
Here in Canada, we finally have a good government and a fine Prime Minister (who is proud of our Military) and we get the Owe next door to undercut freedom once more…we are in trouble and, like Glen Beck says, doing nothing will doom us all to slavery.
BTW, if anyone is interested, all of the Canadian soldiers I have known, who fought in WWII fought for Winston Churchill, he was their leader not Mackenzie King. They fought for Canada, with Churchill, in spite of the weak, mentally inept PM sitting in the House of Commons.
I know a hero when I see one because I have known many, The Owe and Ikky, do not even register on the radar screen.
Sorry for the log post everyone, Bryceman, your link really got my goat.

Just when you thought you have heard it all, I read this in a British paper: “Shopper asked for proof of age to buy Asda teaspoons.”

Brazao: I did interview Magdalene, at length over the last couple days. Her story to me is
this. She was interviewed by both you and your mom, at your home office, or at the
house. That this was on a Friday, that she went home to, start on the Monday.
When she came back you asked for her passport so that you could take care of sponsoring
her, getting her an LMO and a work permit as a live in caregiver.
She gave you that passport, you held that passport for three weeks.
After three weeks of realizing you were not sponsoring her as a caregiver, she then
decided to leave because it was dead time for her, as a live in caregiver she has to work
24 months within 36 in order to qualify for landed status.
When she realized that was not happening with your family. She gave you notice she was
leaving, you became furious with her, swore at her, called her names, and basically she
bolted from the home without her belongings, she left a bag behind.
Dhalla: I’ve never raised my voice with anyone.
Brazao: So you didn’t call her any names.
Dhalla: Sorry I’m just eating. I f you can send me all of this stuff, I’m going to follow up
on all of this, because this is completely incorrect.
Brazao: Okay, now, sometime later she said she returned to the home, with a cab driver
in a snowstorm and she rang the doorbell and was in your driveway for two hours, she
knows you were inside and that she kept phoning you and that you refused to answer but
at one point you answered and that you said you were going to call the police and have
her deported, because she is a newcomer here, she has no rights, and you are a very
powerful person in Ottawa.

speaking of juxtaposition, here’s a learning moment for purveyors of SDA.
This is called ‘dual messaging’. It’s a communication’s strategy that allows an organization to message to its’ core constituent’s while holding an untenable position.
(it allows the mindless partisans to think their ‘guy’ is the best)

OTTAWA – Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is leaving the door open to improve Employment Insurance (EI) to avoid being forced into an election by the opposition parties in Parliament.
Hard RE the Chrysler loans
I guess that would be the same as the Loans given by prior Liberal Govts to Bomadier or CSL, Were still waiting to be repaid!
That would include those ‘loans’ as well…too bad the Cons have become Liberals
“We have in this country a federal government that increasingly is engaged in trying to determine which business, which regions, which industries will succeed, which will not through a whole range of economic development, regional development corporate subsidization programs”

Long story on the Ruby Dhalla fiasco!
Rewrite G-M headline:

More sympathy from MSM: “Sporting a small goatee and a fashionable hair cut”.

Cbc does not have anything on the ‘Ruby-nanny’ story,so I don’t think it happened…The real news is the KHS-Mulroney story. Newman and Cushore took about ten minutes of air-time today interpreting the testimony for us regular folk who ain’t nowhere near as smart as them or that iggy guy.
