Why is it that when a major scientific expedition has just reported the surprise discovery that newly formed arctic ice was often twice as thickas expected, only one newspaper in the world thinks it is newsworthy?

“U.S. Gas Fields Go From Bust to Boom
CADDO PARISH, La. — A massive natural-gas discovery here in northern Louisiana heralds a big shift in the nation’s energy landscape. After an era of declining production, the U.S. is now swimming in natural gas.
Even conservative estimates suggest the Louisiana discovery — known as the Haynesville Shale, for the dense rock formation that contains the gas — could hold some 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That’s the equivalent of 33 billion barrels of oil, or 18 years’ worth of current U.S. oil production. Some industry executives think the field could be several times that size.

“Liberal MP could face inquiry over nanny debacle
By KATHLEEN HARRIS AND CHRISTINA SPENCER, SUN MEDIA
OTTAWA — Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla could face multiple investigations amid allegations she illegally hired then mistreated two nannies in what one Conservative MP called “involuntary servitude.”
Two foreign caregivers employed by the 35-year-old Toronto MP and her brother say their passports were seized. They also claim they were forced to work long hours for cash and perform non-caregiver duties such as washing cars, shining shoes and cleaning clinics. The allegations, published in the Toronto Star, have not been proven.
Dhalla declined interview requests Tuesday and was not present in the House of Commons, but issued a statement through her office that she takes the assertions “very seriously.”
“I have hired a lawyer to vigorously defend my reputation and ensure the facts of this matter are fully explored and corrected,” it read.
Despite her absence, the Dhalla controversy raged in the Commons, as Tory MP Paul Calandra referred to the Liberal MP being “in hot water” for hiring live-in caregivers then refusing to sponsor their immigration applications — “essentially keeping them in a position of involuntary servitude.”
NDP MP Olivia Chow said the allegations cast the spotlight on an escalating problem of exploitation of foreign workers, and demanded the government crack down on those who prey on the most vulnerable.”
