    My 13 year old daughter just finished telling me that her entire 8th grade class discussed this coalition issue, and were joined by the principal and vice-principal during the discussion.
    The entire class unanimously denounced the coalition, and placed blame on the Liberal Party and Dion. They decided that the GG should call an election.
    Think of it, an entire class of 13 year olds, 5 years away from voting, now turned off the Liberal brand.
    In the GTA, yet. And these kids do not inhabit the upper middle class (not from Tory households, in other words).

    Canadians probably will. Albertans likely will not. There is a high liklihood that Alberta will take their riches and start a new country of their own. Saskatchewan MAY come along afterwards, possibly B.C. after a decade or so. Manitoba likely will stay Canadian.

  13. Its time to stop and take a look at the western provinces’ role in Federation. Is there the political continuity across the west to start a formal pact/agreement to present to Ottawa? Either we regionally unite on this issue or we will be picked apart by an Ottawa that has lost its sanity.

Shaken, all this proves is that the principal and vice-principal of this school are indoctrinating your young children with anti-liberal mentality instead of guiding children to think for themselves. Most thirteen year-old children do not have a good grasp of politics and just spew out the garbage their parents (in this case teachers/principles) teach them, conservative or liberal. Also, to Darcy, Stephan Dion would not be “un-elected”. Canadians DO NOT elect Prime Ministers. We elect MPs: the legislature. Whichever group of MPs can get together and form a government has the right to do so. To confuse this issue as undemocratic is incredibly misleading. Americans elect Presidents, we elect Members of Parliament. Although you would all be in the right to refer to this as a nasty power grab or “political game” it is far from undemocratic.

  18. Not nearly strong enough language on Stelmach’s part. He needs (as does Wall) to say that one of the options is to have a referendum asking ABans (SKians) for the authority to renegotiate the terms of union WITHIN confederation.
    I have made this point to dozens of people who have called me today. And I ask the supplemental question “what do you think that would do to Ed’s popularity?”
    To a person they have all replied almost verbatim “it would go through the roof”. With a hard public line like that above and a massive surge in popularity, it would send as clear a message as we can in the West that we mean business – that this coalition and the actions it plans to take will be resisted to the fullest.
    If the ROC chooses to ignore that signal and catastropy happens to this union, we can aleast say with a clear conscience that they were given fair warning.
    By Stelmach continuing to give ambiguous, couched words he is putting this country in jeopardy. And the people of the West will be partly to blame if we do not bring enough pressure to bear in him to take such action.

  21. Rog… even 13 year old children know how the system and real world work. Most Canadians could care less about who their MP is as long as they represent a certain party. Some places you could run a mailbox for a popular party and the mailbox would be their MP. This is not the US House of Representatives or US Senate. I vote for members of Congress. Canadians vote for MPs who sit on their hands and vote the party line.
    It is pretty sad when 13 year olds in public school know this putsch is morally flawed. Like all left wing institutions, their attempts to brainwash kids have failed. There is hope for the future in Canada.

    I had a very strong understanding of Canadian gov’t and politics by grade 8 (13yrs old). Both of my daughters 9 and 13 understand Canadian and American politics; and, I don’t indoctrinate them. I challenge their thinking by relating current issues to situations they can relate to. That being said, I had one McCain kid and one Obama kid; but, both of them felt that PMSH was best suited for PM based on the debate we all watched.

    Sorry the Klein that ruled Alberta talked tough and withered at the first sign of objection from Eastern Canada. He never brought in an Alberta Pension Plan, an Alberta Police Force or any of the other things that would have protected Alberta.

  30. I remember well, the Constitutional battle of the 1980s.
    Many differences this time around.
    Back then, one energy producing province – now, five.
    Much of the financial power has since shifted west. It is now possible.
    Dion is not popular anywhere in Canada.
    The second time around (true with anything), people are much more skeptical and prepared. They see the pieces falling into place and can take action earlier and more effectively.
    Also, this time the industrial heartland is scared stiff of the coalition’s intentions.
    Just a few floor-crossings this time would put out the fire.
    But, IMO, the most important difference now is the Internet. Last time around, the people had to wait for the media to provide the (filtered) news. Organizing was difficult and slow.

  33. One only need to look at this situation and parallels with Trudeau’s NEP to see the repercussions of this coalition government for national unity. It will make NEP look tame.
    Trudeau, love him or hate him, at least had a properly elected government. Despite that, westerners have never forgiven or forgotten. In this situation, the coalition has no mandate from voters – 0% of Canadians voted for a coalition. In fact, during the election, Dion expressly said that he would never form a coalition with the NDP. But now this coalition is effectively replacing western voter’s voices with Quebec separatists. A coalition of this nature who enacts any legislation that negatively effects the west will be sowing seeds of western alienation that will live forever. A resentment that will spawn a threat to national unity that can never be undone.
    The western premiers must talk and act decisively to protect their citizens. They should talk to the GG to help her understand the potential fallout.

  36. Has anyone gotten the news that Danny Williams says he can work with the Liberal NDP coalition? Not a mention on the CTV ticker tape scroll of the Bloc being involved. That little prick Williams is certainly pretty cocky acting like the nouveau riche hick tossing his weight around. Apparently he’s forgotten the many years the rest of Canada paid equalization to his province. Now he thinks it’s OK to support a cabal of fools with a Separatist holding veto power.
    The media is still trying to cal it a pact between the Libs and Dips but without the Bloc they’re toast.
    Also today we hear from Lizzie May who will support the unholy alliance and would like to get her arse in a Senate seat. Beautiful stuff indeed.
    Mr. Harper had better get busy and fill the vacant Senate seats, to hell with principles, they don’t matter to anyone else in the HOC. Power trumps all for the Opposition and we do not want them in power.
    Jacques Parizeau has surfaced as a new fan of Dion’s after all these years! Great help to Dion’s quest to become PM of Canada to have such an extreme Separatist in his corner. He’s just been run over by a bus.

  42. At a certain point, enough people get fed up with the sleazy deals and the corruption. You get a critical mass of people who just aren’t going to take it any more.
    That’s what formed the trade union movement in this country, one too many sleazy corrupt politicians made one too many idiot blunders, and there were -riots-. Lots of them.
